I wouldn’t say 10 because I’ve only been drinking 3 Floyd’s beer for 11 years. But 6 probably isn’t out of the question. I always assumed it coincided with one of their production increases with new equipment. Around the same time gumballhead went from 4.5% abv to 5.5%

I wonder about this though - do you think your palette hasn’t changed, especially with the influx of NEIPAs? I remember hopslam as a world changer, or arctic panzer wolf (when you could still get it in growlers for $25) as the best beer I’d ever had in my life. Now I can’t be bothered to buy a panzer wolf or hopslam...I figured it was because my tastes changed as other beers shaped my likes and dislikes, but its a fair point that the recipes could be the driving factor.

I only said 10 because I took a tour way back when in 2008 (tour was $1 and we got to pocket some pellet Amarillo hops - no free beers though) and someone asked if they bottle conditioned or force carbonated, and they were all about forced carbonation to ensure every bottle would taste the same. Finding sediment may just have been shoddy production?

When did they change the Gumballhead labels? I'm pretty sure when I started drinking GH it had a different label than it does now and I think may of even said it was bottle conditioned. It is the one beer I am 100 percent sure has changed and I typically don't get into the "it tastes different than it used to" debates. It used to be a nice wheaty HOPPY beer....now I think it tastes very lemony and watered down.

I too am skeptical about bottle conditioning at FFF. I have a hard time believing Zombie was ever bottled conditioned. It seemed like when they released at the brewpub this it had always been bottled within a few days, hardly enough to bottle condition properly.

I know this seems like the popular opinion and in many cases could be the reason, but personally I don't think that's the case for me. Like I said, I've drank Zombie Dust an absurd amount more than any other beer, and I continue to drink it because I still think it's a good, easy drinking APA. But it's not the same as 6-7 years ago, when it was a citra forward hopped wrecking ball. I use to prefer it over many other APAs, but now there are quite a few offerings from Pipeworks, Half-Acre and many others locally which at one time I didn't prefer over ZD but now clearly do, and some of those definitely didn't shift over that timeframe… at least not enough for me to notice like with Zombie Dust.

I've never seen a beer vary per batch like Zombie Dust. When it's at its best it's hard to beat. Other times it's pretty good. I can't speak on the differences from years ago but it changes enough just month to month

I bought a fresh case at the pub literally four days after bottling it lost so much. Seems many of their pales and IPAs are super time sensitive but fresh they are outstanding. Alpha King, Space Station, and Gumby included

Agreed! Back when it was in shorter demand, I would typically buy on the same day it was bottled, go home and chill, then crack some open. 10 hour bottle conditioning isn't possible.

I will say, personally, I used to think ZD was a hop wrecking ball as well, but I've gone back to other beers that were tongue thrashers to me back in the day, like Palate Wrecker, Hop Juju, Arrogant Bastard, etc...all were less Abrasive to my palate more recently than they were when I was less accustomed to hops. Just speaking personally.

I don't think that is from recipe change. Do you use a rotary phone? How about a type writer? Did the quality get worst on those or did something else come along that was better and replaced them? When FFF, Bells and GI were the only craft games in town there wasn't a lot of competition. Same can be said with 10% doubles made with honey or pales made with Citra when those were in their nascent days.

Hmmmm... are you guys letting your zombie dust warm up enough?

I’m drinking a couple while I eat pepperoni pizza and rare grilled filet minon, and everything tastes great and I feel alive. Mmmm. Brains.

Zombie Dust is still great, but Necron99 is so underrated it hurts.

I thought it was pretty common knowledge that they changed the ZD recipe years ago.

I tried that at the pub last night. Burial collab. A little smoke on the finish. Not bad.

I think this year's DLD firmly solidified the theory that variants are to blame (or thank?) for a smaller number of other barrel aged kiosk bottles this year.

Not only were there 11 variants, but it sounds like attendance was closer to 12-15k, which would be a another big bump up from the average, and everyone got a variant.

Plus, they were pouring multiple variants, most from 2018, all day at most tap stations.

They had to have an insane amount of barrels filled with Dark Lord. Pretty awesome.

was thinking this exact same thing yesterday. what an absolute undertaking that barrel aging must be just for one day. not too mention the fact that they must brew a shit ton of dark lord.

Mistakenly started a new Three Floyds thread. Someone kindly pointed me here.
There is a Three Floyds pop-on in Chicago on 2367 N Milwaukee Ave from now until the 26th. Looks like they will have two rare beer nights.
Schedule of events is here along with some more information:
