    BEER INFO

    Brewed by:
    Klosterbrauerei Andechs

    Style: Doppelbock

    Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.10%

    Availability: Year-round

    Notes / Commercial Description:
This world famous bock from Bavaria’s Holy Mountain is not meant to be rushed, but savoured slowly. As solid as a rock, Andechser Doppelbock Dunkel presides over the evening meal with a colour reminiscent of dark copper with nuances of fiery red. Its clear gleaming look harmonises with its firm, fine pored head.

Also the aroma delights the connoisseur: soft roasted accents and a nuance of dried fruit carrying a vein of caramel. This Doppelbock Dunkel from Bavaria’s Holy Mountain presents a pleasant effervescence. And then there’s the unmistakable flavour: mouthcoating and velvety, strong and yet pleasantly malty – a powerful, robust body. At the same time, it develops an easily recognisable sweetness, embraced in roasted cocoa and a light, bitter hoppiness.

Concluding with a powerful punch, this Doppelbock departs with a lingering aftertaste of quality plain chocolate. A strong Doppelbock that embodies the centuries old Benedictine brewing tradition, sip by

Fullers makes good beers too, their ESB used to be a favorite, it’s been a long time though. Given our district explosion I’d have to know the age though before I bought.

Since you're in Texas, give Celis Pale Bock a shot if you can find it. Despite the name, it comes off very much like an Amber Ale .

Agreed, although I don't think there are a ton of legit altbiers available in the US. Uerige mostly sends sticke and doppelsticke, which aren't really true altbiers. Diebels is one of the sweet non-Altstadt examples. I don't know if any others make it here. At least regularly.
Not a ton of breweries making them over here either. I like Alaskan amber, but it's closer to Diebels and Schlosser than Schumacher and Uerige.

Unless the OP's drinking them in Dusseldorf, I think he should be OK.

    Since you're in Houston...

Saint Arnold Ale Wagger and probably Amber.
Holler brewery has good sessionable english ales. Those normally will be lower hopped but their ESB may still be on the same level as Boston Lager.
    Eureka Heights

Real Ale Bootlegger Brown is very good.
Oasis Texas Brewing has London Homesick. A good malty ale.
Live Oak Big Bark is an amber lager that is good.

Altstadt Brewing is outside of Fredericksburg, Tx but they have an Altbier that should be up your alley. Not hoppy. A bit chocolate/toasty malt. It was quite good. I'm not entirely sure they distribute to Houston though.

    @nc41 @TongoRad

Brawler is special to me. TongoRad had recomended a few years back and i fell in love. I worked at a beer store that Yards rep Ron Johnson came to do samples. I talked to him.....he loves brawler too. We hit it off and next thing i know i get an invite to the brewery with a tour and every time he comes to my store, i got beers, bottle openers, a flag etc....such advocacy and overall hospitslity. For that Yards is a my favorite brewery....

.....to make a long story short....Yards Brawler is amazing. My favorite beer and should be sought out. The beer is so good, i wrote a full resesrched article story on it for fun. Its a dam good beer.

I first had it at CBP watching a Phillies game, perfect beer that had a lot of flavor at a very sane ABV. Great beer for any day, but on a hot day in the sun I enjoyed it. Always get some when I visit PA.

If you are not into hoppy bitterness, you may want to try some Scottish Gruits, which use other spices to replace the hops. Some of the other spices can be bitter so all Gruits are not the same, but in general, if you dislike hoppy bitterness, you should like Gruits. Unfortunately they can be hard to find.

90 Schilling and Alaskan Amber are the first two that come to mind for me. 90 Schilling is probably available in Texas.

I think 90 Schilling is considered a Scotch ale. Either way it is a damn fine beer.

Indeed it is, but it meets the originally requested criteria here (amber/red color, malty, non-hoppy/bitter), AND it's available in the Houston market.

You live far outside New England, but Long Trail Ale would’ve been close to what you’re looking for!

Full Sail Amber Ale does not seem hoppy to me, and I am definitely a lightweight.

Dude. Bell's Amber Ale. The best malt-forward amber ale I've had.
