I've got a few to post. Pitasoup was visiting earlier this week and we smashed through a few blind beers.

Been waiting to open my last two while the site was down. I prefer posting these tastings live rather than from notes.

Well, alright. Now that we can post reviews again, let's get to Blind Beer #11 from johnbjaeger. 16 oz. can poured into my DFH pint and Vickie's DFH snifter.

A-Pours a very hazy golden apricot with a huge frothy white head. Plenty of retention and big big lacing.

S-Malty with a very grainy note. Hop presence is very light.

T-Malty with some very nice earthy hoppiness. Bitterness is solid but not overwhelming, well balanced.

    M-Medium bodied and crisp.

    O-A very tasty brew.

I am going to figure this is a pale ale. Daisy Cutter maybe? Not as hoppy as I remember that beer, though...

    Let's see:

Finch's Beer Company Cutthroat Pale Ale. got the style at least. I am not familiar with this brewery but I am glad I got to try this one. Very nice indeed.

Blind beer #5, courtesy of neorunner.

    Before Pic

A: Deep murky reddish-brown, but a bit orange/yellow where there's less liquid. Very little head.

S: Hmm, smells like weird a weird kriek I had a few weeks ago. Sweet, a bit fruity.

T: Like the smell at first, but with a very bitter finish. Maybe some spice? I could be crazy, but it's making my mouth feel odd and I don't think it's booze.

M: I don't like the aforementioned mouth feeling. Not super pleasant.

O: No guesses here, but this is definitely a miss for me. I'm going to guess the style is either some horrible accident with cherries, or a weird chili beer. I'd give this about a D.

    Becky's review:

    12oz bottle, poured into tulip
appearance: light red-brown, clear until I poured surprise sediment into the glasses (yes, both)
smell: slightly sweet, rich smell--familiar, but I can't place it at all
taste: almost a sweet molasses flavor up front, with a strong, lingering bitterness
mouthfeel: carbonation seems to add to the bitterness
overall: not for me. no clue on style, but I will guess barleywine?

    Reveal: Dominion Millennium Ale

    After Pic

Huh, never heard of this before, definitely an oddball.

    Blind beer #6!

    Before Pic

A: Pours the color of straw, no head but given that the bottle was capped and corked I was pouring rather carefully watching for sediment. Turns out it was all safely caked on the bottom.

S: Peaches, and lots of them. Also rather sweet. Smells pretty much like those gummy peach candies. Fortunately, I love those things.

T: Yup, sweet and peaches, with a small amount of tart. It's nice, but I'm glad this is a small bottle. Reminds me of the New Glarus "sours", so sweet I can't handle a full glass.

O: I like it, but I'm not in love with it. Pechish Woods is still my peach beer. Solid B.

    Becky's review:

appearance: light peach, slightly cloudy, bubbly
smell: very sweet, some kind of fruit (maybe peach, if I'm not just being swayed by the color...)
taste: like a fruit soda. again, maybe peach, but mostly just sweet. the first sip was shudder-inducing, cloyingly sweet, but subsequent sips were much more palatable
mouthfeel: nice amount of carbonation, again basically like a fruit soda.
overall: I can see enjoying this on a porch on a summer evening. I could also be convinced that this is actually non-alcoholic soda.

Reveal: Mirabelle by Brouwerij De Troch. Plums? I really thought peach. On some level stone fruits all taste the same... Anyway, another new one to us, thanks Neorunner!

Uh oh it's me again. Time for a bunch of beers done from notes, so these will be even be more brief than normal. Sorry, I'm not the best reviewer...

    Beer #7, still courtesy neorunner:

    A: Copperish-red
    S: Malty, a bit fruity
T: Rather mild, a bit sweet, thin, maybe some spices.
O: It's okay, give it about a C. [I was thinking Winter Warmer the whole time, honest!]

    Becky's review:

appearance: reddish brown, clear, no head, little visible carbonation
smell: sweet and malty, slightly roasty
taste: threw me for a loop, not nearly as sweet as it smells
    mouthfeel: carbonated, slightly thin
overall: nice, not super exciting. no clue about the style, not even a guess. kinda just tastes like 'regular beer'

Reveal: Great Lakes Xmas Ale. Another new one, I was thinking this would make an appearance because we got the glass. Sadly, winter warmer isn't much my style.

    Beer #8:

    A: Hazy straw
    S: Yeasty fruity
    T: Dry, same yeasty fruitiness.
O: Same as above, it's an okay beer.

    Becky's review:

appearance: straw-colored, slightly cloudy, very slight, quickly dissipating head
smell: very slight sweet and fruity
taste/mouthfeel/overall: carbonated to the point of overwhelming the flavor. every sip is bubble time, and I really can't pick out much else...wheat?

Reveal: Michigan Brewing Wheatland. Yet another new beer/brewery. Thanks neorunner!

    Beer #9:

A: Deep but clear, translucent brown
    S: Dark fruits, booze, molasses
T: Molasses, lingering sweetness, even more lingering booziness, some roast.
    O: Fine. Think it's about a B beer.

Reveal: HeBrew Jewbelation 13. I've had the vertical, but none of the others. Another new beer!

    Beer #10

Short, stubby bottle that has me thinking it's bambic, we'll see!

A: Basically looks like apple juice, not in a bad way.
S: Tart, a bit of funk, definitely a sour.
T: Pleasant, tart, not as much funk as the smell, maybe some weird fruit, tastes like some of those upland sours made with fruits I've never tried.
    O: Good beer, I like it, B+.

Reveal: Bambic! I've had it before, but long enough ago that I wouldn't have identified it without the bottle.

    Blind beer #11 from Shogo.
Calls for a pint... Served it into a nonic pint.

Reviewed completely blind, without knowledge of brewery, style, or beer.

I'm already thinking barleywine or strong ale... This is dark, rather murky, slightly purple, reddish brown. Low carbonation level with a loose soapy head.

Smells of molasses, treacle, caramel, and toffee. The toffee is even more prominent on the tongue than in the olfactory. Very dry finish...

Oily medium body with some sweetness up front before the English toffee flavor dries it out.

Overall-- I'm assuming this is a strong ale... And I isn't one that really blows me away. As we warm more; the beer has a pronounced boozy warmth that, while not entirely unpleasant, is a bit overdone.

--REVEAL-- Otter Creek Brewing's Twentieth Anniversary.
This is in fact an American strong ale. And it isn't one I've ever heard of before. At least I honed in on the right style!

    Now that I know what it is, I'm going to go ahead and give it some numbers;
    A-3
    S-4
    T-3.5
    M-3
    O-3.5

I won't lie, that beer is abrasive. I think it's a double or tripling of their flagship copper ale recipe. I think time will treat it well.

You know, I could see it aging pretty well.
I've got one more from ya Phil... I'm headed to FFF for the day so I may not get to it tonight...

Closing out Blind BIF Round #6, courtesy of johnbjaeger.

A-Pours a deep, deep opaque brown with some black cherry highlights, a very small ring of reddish brown head and no lacing. 4.0

S-Hot, hot, hot! There's boozy and then there's boozy, and then there's this. Lots of delicious barrel, sweet dark fruit, brandy notes I think but could also be whiskey of some sort. 4.5

T-Lots of boozy heat and sweet maltiness. Brown sugar and raisin, booze, that's about it really. But that's really awesome as it's sweet but not cloying. 4.5

    M-Medium bodied, warm, delicious. 4.0

O-Pretty darn good flavors for a 14.5% beer. Hot, sure, but not overdone. 4.5

Let's guess this is a brandy barrel aged stout. The answer is:

Bourbon County Stout 2011. Delicious. An all time fave! Great way to end this BIF. Thanks, John!

Pretty sure I've only one beer left to drink/post. Moving this week, it has been hectic.

The bottle will be shared with some fellow BAs over the weekend. Hopefully it isn't a killshot. How's everyone else's backlog?

hey everybody - haven't been too active with the new format (and crazy busy life as well) - but I don't want to let this BIF die. there are a number of folks that still need to post reviews - and you know who you are. let's get the reviews posted so we can close this out. And then we can move on to round 7.
