Thanks for the feedback. We had Wiley Roots as part of last year's event and have a great deal of respect for their brewing talents. We always try to bring new breweries to the event, some of them recommended by friends and attendees. It gets more difficult each year because we now have 6,500+ craft breweries in the U.S. and we try to get a decent geographic balance. We have limited space and want to maintain a quality event for brewers and guests.

Breweries bring some of their rarest brews to the annual tasting. The beer list for the Denver Rare Beer Tasting 10 will be released prior to the event.

In addition to the beer and silent auction donations made by participating breweries, Craft Beer and Brewing is the media sponsor for the Denver Rare Beer Tasting 10 and logistical support is being provided by MicroStar. Additional sponsorship packages are available for companies that wish to take part in this boutique tasting.

Tickets for the event go on sale on June 17 at 10 a.m. (MT) via AXS.com. VIP tickets are $175 and include early admission on Sept. 21 starting at Noon. General Admission tickets are $125 for the 1-4 p.m. tasting. Each attendee receives a commemorative tasting glass, t-shirt, program and pen. A special beer centric lunch created by Jensen Cummings of Brewed Food is included in the ticket price and guests will have the chance to bid in an exciting silent auction that includes a variety of unique beer experiences and collectibles. During the event, attendees can also participate in the Brewers Health Initiative, a free men’s health screening. Last year, 165 men took advantage of the free blood test during GABF weekend in Denver.

“When we launched this event in 2009 the craft beer world was a different place. There were 1,600 craft brewers in the U.S. and now there are more than 6,500. There has been an explosion of beer styles and the sophistication of the craft beer consumer has expanded. Rare beer was a relatively new thing when the Denver Rare Beer Tasting was conceived,” said Lyke. “The Denver Rare Beer Tasting serves as a celebration of beer creativity with a serious mission: raising awareness about prostate cancer. Beer fans get to taste a collection of beers that few people have the opportunity to enjoy, while rubbing elbows with some of the world’s most talented brewers.”

The first nine Denver Rare Beer Tastings sold out several weeks in advance. The event will be held this year on two floors of the McNichols Civic Center Building at 144 W. Colfax Ave.

All Denver Rare Beer Tasting ticket holders will be entered into a drawing for a special beer trip for two. VIP ticket holders will receive three raffle tickets and general admission ticket holders will receive one ticket. Anyone wearing a Pints for Prostates t-shirt or hat to the event will receive another free entry for the drawing. Additional tickets will be available for a donation. The winner will be drawn during the event from tickets collected exclusively at the Denver Rare Beer Tasting. The winner and a guest will receive a beer trip that includes roundtrip airfare from the continental U.S., hotel accommodations, ground transportation, brewery tours, pub crawls, beer lunches and beer dinners.

Pints for Prostates is a 501(c)3 non-profit charity and all net proceeds from Denver Rare Beer Tasting go towards the group’s awareness mission and help to fund the education and support programs of the Us TOO International Prostate Cancer Education and Support Network, and free prostates cancer screening programs provided by the Prostate Conditions Education Council.

    About Pints for Prostates

Pints for Prostates reaches men through the universal language of beer to encourage them to take charge of their health. The group was founded by prostate cancer survivor and beer writer Rick Lyke in 2008. The grassroots effort raises awareness among men about the importance of regular men’s health screenings by making appearances at beer festivals, social networking and pro bono advertising. According to the National Cancer Institute, approximately 165,000 new prostate cancer cases will be diagnosed in 2018 in the U.S. More information is available at www.pintsforprostates.org. Pints for Prostates also has a presence on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram (@pints4prostates).

Not to start up a debate on a sensitive topic, but how many tickets can each person purchase this year?

Thanks. We have some invites out to east coast breweries that we hope will join the event.

Ticket quantities and ticket limits are the same this year as they have been for the last several. We've not seen a shift in the average number of tickets ordered for either VIP or GA. The quick sellout last year was not the result of bots or scalpers as some wanted to believe. Basically with just 250 VIP tickets, if you have 100 buyers ready to jump in when the box office opens, you quickly go into a sold out situation. This has really created a virtual lottery for the VIPs the last couple of years.

I advise people who have been closed out to always try 5-10 minutes after the initial rush. As people fail to complete ticket purchases that inventory returns to the supply.

Good luck on Sunday and thanks for the support!

I was literally asleep at the switch and for the first time since the VIP program was instituted and so I will be going GA this year. Oh well. I'm still going! How quick did VIP sell out this year?

Thanks for the amazing support for Pints for Prostates! All VIP tickets were gobbled up in just one minute. More than half the General Admission tickets have already been sold. We appreciate the support for the Denver Rare Beer Tasting 10.

This was our best first day ticket sales in the 10 year history of the event. General Admission tickets are still available, but are moving rapidly. The time to act to get your tickets is now.

A few updates and a friendly point I'd like to make that might end up either heading of or starting a debate. I hope it is taken in the spirit of someone who hopes to run a really good event (I think we've done that during the last nine years) that raises money for a great cause -- men's health.

First off, we are close to finalizing the brewery list. We will be at either 70 or 72 depending on the responses we receive in the next couple of days.

Ticket sales have been very strong -- thanks for the support. If you have friends coming to town let them know they need to get a GA ticket now. When we announce the beer list -- hopefully in the next 10 days -- the remainder of the tickets will move rapidly.

Speaking of the beer list, the invited breweries have been offering up some truly special beers for the 10th anniversary of the Denver Rare Beer Tasting. How special? Want a little sneak peak? OK, we're all friends here. Samuel Adams is bringing back Utopias Barrel-Aged on Cherries. This was a huge hit at DRBT VIII and has not been served at any other public event since. Sierra Nevada will be pouring Denver Super Rare Barrel Aged Narwhal, a one off killer variant they are creating just for this event. Rowley Farmhouse Ales will offer up a yet to be named Gotlandsdricka that they created as an extremely limited time offering from The Rare Beer Club as a Pints for Prostates fundraiser. The Rare Barrel is bringing two beers -- Cherry Home, Sour Home and Garage Service -- that were either club or tasting room exclusives. Kane is bringing Barrel Aged Sunday Brunch, a beer they released only once that they are pulling from their personal archives just for DRBT 10 guests. I'm going to stop there and wait to reveal some of the others when we have a more complete list. But this should give you an idea of what will be available.

Now the point I'd like to make. Please understand I recognize people pay a good deal of money to attend our event. We appreciate the support for Pints for Prostates and value the friends we've made over the years. I've been concerned about the expectations that some beer fans have regarding beer events, including ours. And we feel partially responsible for some of this exuberance. When the first Denver Rare Beer Tasting was held in 2009 the concept of "rare beer" was relatively new. Ours was among the very first to exclusively focus on rare beer. A small group of pioneers collected or traded beer. Only a few breweries had special bottle release events. There were 1,600 craft breweries in America -- now there are more than 6,600. And, it sometimes feels like most of the new ones open with barrels stacked neatly in the corner.

Craft beer has become a bigger business and community than it used to be. There have been a few breweries that were built to sell. Some people go to bottle releases with the goal of profiting from the beer they get that day. But overall, craft beer is still a great place, with friendly people and a cool vibe. Where this intersects with what we try to do with the Denver Rare Beer Tasting is when a brewery or beer or two get anointed each year as the "must have whale." It's funny to me as someone who has been searching for great beer across the U.S. and around the world for nearly 40 years. I look at the breweries we gather every year and marvel at the beers they donate. I know if I walked into my local tap house and saw one or two of these on the list on a random Friday afternoon I'd be impressed and gladly pay $10+ for a 8 ounce pour. But the expectations are different for an event like the Denver Rare Beer Tasting. People look past the curated selection of breweries and the unique beers being offered and decide on the value and success of the event based on a set of criteria that gives the term beer geek or beer nerd a bad name. I fall into that group up to a point. However, I tend to look at the overall experience and beers I was able to try, rather than dwell on the one that got away. It's impossible to try every beer at an event with high gravity beers, so I go in knowing I'll miss some.

Last year we had one brewery out of 58 that started pouring during the VIP run out of beer just before the doors opened for the GA. We put a new system in place where we had 10 Bullpen Brewers (5 per floor) ready to swing in and fill slots as beers did run out. The last of those went into action at 2:30 p.m. -- 2.5 hours after the start of VIP and 90 minutes into the GA. That means 48 out 58 brewers were still pouring with just 90 minutes left in the event. But some people have commented that "all the good beers" are gone by the end of the VIP. That GA tickets are not worth the bother. And that almost no one is pouring beer at the end of the event. None of these things are true, but this is the perception created by some who may have missed a whale and is frustrated by that fact. Further, some will even pound on certain brewers saying they "phone it in" because they bring a beer that might be on the shelf of their local bottle shop. That might be true if the brewer is from the region they are from, but the beer might still be rare and hard to get for many of our guests who on average come from 40+ states and several foreign countries. An important thing to note is that we bring new brewers to the event each year to keep it fresh and introduce people to new beers we've heard good things about. Sometimes I've not had a beer from one of these breweries and regularly get surprised by just how amazing these brews taste.

We do survey guests each year and take the feedback seriously. We added the VIP session a few years back based on strong survey interest. We've added brewers to our invite list based on survey tips. And we've made other changes to hopefully improve things for the guests who buy our tickets. We do understand that people have a choice in how to spend money during GABF. Our first year there was just one other "public" event on that Friday besides the GABF. Last year, one listing I saw had 42 events of different sizes -- plus the GABF -- all taking place Friday. The DRBT ticket was among the most, if not the most, expensive. So we know we must provide a good value.

My reason for bringing all of this up is to say that I will respond to individual comments and complaints via direct message this year, but trying to defend, explain or address every single issue someone might have with the event is counterproductive. People who manage beer events put in quite a few hours and the quality festivals are the result of dedicated organizers, an army of great volunteers and breweries that care about the craft beer community. We all need to remember that the next time we attend a festival and take a moment to realize it is about the experience, the beers that surprise us, the bucket list brews we are lucky enough to try and the great people we get to meet. Whales are nice, but they can swallow us if we lose sight of what makes craft beer so special.

    Rick,
Well stated position. My wife and I have attended all 9 previous DRBT events and have tickets for this year, so we look forward to hitting all 10years. I have enjoyed all of these events and they get better every year. I enjoy wearing my T-shirt from the first event and having “new comers”see what was rare back in 2009. I hope to chat with you again this year. It was funny to see our picture end up in Facebook posts from 2 years ago. Prost!!!!

We list which floor the Bullpen's will appear on, but there are a ton of variables. When/where a beer appears depends on when beers run out on each floor and whether that brewery was doing draught or bottles. McNichols does not have a good sound system covering each floor, so we try our best by changing over the banner once we know the beer going into the space. Last year all the change overs took place between 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., so 10 new brewers came on line during a 90 minute window. It kept our volunteers moving.

    Hi, Rick.

I'm still seeing both VIP and General admin tickets available on axs, but was reading higher in the thread that all VIP tickets were gone. I just want to make sure I'm not being scammed if I purchase from axs. Either way, totally fine with GA, but thought I'd check.

Looking forward to what sounds like an amazing event!

EDIT: Answered my own question. Wouldn't let me add to the cart. Sorry I jumped the gun!
