    Really, Utah?
Utah is a beer lover's paradise compared to Saudi Arabia. You can receive hundreds of lashes (in public!) or be imprisoned for even possessing beer. It's even illegal to sell home brewing products and if you choose to homebrew it must be done in the utmost secrecy.

Anyone who's answer is "somewhere in the united states" or even Canada for that matter needs to understand that the world is bigger than North America and we have it pretty good here compared to some places, as far as beer goes.

Uh....lighten up a bit. Only meant the liquor laws are more rigid in UT. Beautiful scenery though....far superior to Colorado:rolling_eyes:

National headline in Canada today: "Your beer is about to undergo a government makeover".

Among other things, the federal govt. plans to overhaul the definition of beer, legal permitted ingredients, and labeling requirements.
Estimated cost to Cdn craft breweries: $5.5 million (......meaning really at least $10 million...)
and 2 years of product, market and industry uncertainty.

This just one day after they announced legalized weed....effing WEED!.....will start Oct. 17.

So. Tell me again how Canada's not a blackhole of beer idiocy.

While what you say is strictly true, you leave out that this "overhaul" of the definition and of permitted ingredients is actually broadening the definition and increasing the permitted ingredients to catch up with what craft brewers are already doing (which, while unenforced, violates current regulations).

"Beer aficionados who have closely watched the industry for years say the proposals would help regulations catch up with an explosion in styles and types of beers. ...

Stephen Beaumont, co-author of The World Atlas of Beer, said there are any number of beers on the market today that violate the existing standards, either through ingredients or fermentation methods.

“This is all stuff that is going on and the regulations just haven’t been there to catch up to all of it,” Beaumont said.

No longer would beer be required to “possess the aroma, taste and character commonly attributed to beer” or be categorized into different styles or types like ale, stout, porter and malt liquor. Instead, officials are proposing to set limits on sugar content and simplify language around the use of additives that would set define what is a beer.

Added to that would be a wider list of herbs and spices among other ingredients that can be used in the brewing process.

“We’re not going to be excluding anything that is currently defined as a beer, but it does provide a criteria for brewers to work with,” said Luke Harford, president of Beer Canada, a national trade association that represents more than 50 companies that make about 90 per cent of Canada’s beer.

“It allows them to hold on to what is traditionally thought of as a beer while at the same time allowing them to innovate within that category.”

Most of the additional cost seems come from labeling requirements, which are not yet final, and will be phased in. Also, the above quoted news story seems to say that brewers will be able to add ingredients to the permitted list through a defined process. Such ingredient approvals are required in the USA as well for certain categories of ingredients.

Yes. This is horrible news. I guess that spells the end of beer in Canada. Think of all the brewers who will be out of work when they have to order their next batch of labels with different wording. Oh the humanity!!!

And to think... this on the same day that it was announced Hill Farmstead will be available at the LCBO in a few weeks. I assume, however, they will be selling the dog piss versions of their saisons to meet local tastes.

It is amazing how gullible you are to vapid spin.

Government solves no problems..it creates them.

Beer is not a complicated, dangerous, exotic, misunderstood product.

Imposing millions of dollars of costs, market and investing uncertainty in any industry is not a "plus".

Canada does not come close to enjoying a strong, diverse, full-employment economy...but its government decided to prioritize THIS? A pointlesss, make-work, additional interference in an already ridiculously paternalistic joke of a business?

I deserve to have regulations updated to more accurately reflect reality? Gee thanks!

Oh! And, as an aside, here in Ontario we recently elected our very own demagogue who has promised “buck a beer” pricing by cutting back on some of the tax on alcohol. Can you imagine? Only a dollar for a bottle of dog piss! And that is a Canadian dollar. So, like 75 cents US. Tell me you can buy a bottle of dog piss for 75 cents in Oregon and I will concede defeat. I dare ya!!

Hawaii's not really lacking either. Their beer may not blow your mind, but they have a number of craft breweries, on top of shit tons of easy access to the same cheap ass beer all the rest of us have.

In fact, really enjoyed myself at Kona. Way bigger selection than I expected.

I’ll have to respectfully disagree with you on that, but then again it’s been a while since I’ve had anything from them because I dislike their approach (and beer) so much.

I'd be curious to know your qualms, but, from the limited selection I've had of theirs, you're definitely missing out to an extreme degree, especially having such easy access. Yeah, they're jumping on bandwagon of what's white hot right now, but it's a smart thing to do, especially in a place like Alabama that is relatively far behind even regarding the basic craft trends of the past decade.

The beer wastelands are shrinking, there's too much money to be made. There may still be a state or a place that's behind the curve, but they'll be pulled forward eventually.
