So I go to ship out my package today at my local UPS store and the lady working the counter opens the box! She told me they have to inspect boxes if they are marked fragile. She then tells me that they cannot ship liquor. I tried to use the "they are collectible containers and they are worthless without the contents" card. I swear, I had to get the only employee who cares to much about their job! FML! Going to print a FedEx label and drop it off tomorrow. Sorry guys, just venting a bit. First trade and the man is already trying to hold me back!

I think it's kind of hard to play the "it's collectible glassware" card when she is sitting there staring at obviously unopened bottles of beer...

First off, don't mark the box fragile. "Fragile" is shipper speak for "let's kick this box a little harder than the other ones". If you're worried about them tossing your box around, then you haven't packed well enough.

Second, local resellers/branches will differ by location. Don't get discouraged just because the UPS branch gave you a hard time.

Third, you can schedule a Fedex pickup of your box for $3. You leave it outside and they magically come and take it, no questions asked. For people that are in problematic areas, this is a great way to do it. I do it this way because I have no convenient Fedex/UPS dropoff point near me.

Not to worried about the packaging. I packed the hell out of those bottles. Double boxed, bubble wrap, air packs, contractor grade garbage bag and each is individually wrapped. I just put fragile on the box as a extra precaution.

As for telling her they were collectible bottles, I didn't really know what else to say. I'm more pissed she opened the box and unpacked it. Now I have to re pack everything.

On the plus side: found out that FedEx is cheaper!

Do yourself a favor and trust cbeer88... "Fragile" on a box is a red flag to any shipping company. Why draw more unneeded attention to your package? Your story pretty much proves his point.

    Make a scene.

Step 1: Yell, "GET YOUR HANDS OFF MY PACKAGE YOU PERVERT!"

Step 2: Threaten to take your business elsewhere.

Step 3: Take your business elsewhere.

It's $3 per package right? So if I have 3 packages it's $9 for home pickup?

I thought they advertised that home pickup was free for fedex ground on their site - now I can't find any evidence of that...

    Damn.

I may be wrong but I think if you click "use an already scheduled pick up" for another box, you might get a break on multi packages...... Like I said, I might be wrong...

Should have just said it was fragile semen samples. She wouldn't have opened it I bet.

She looked like the type that would like gay ****. She had the package open before I could say anything. I was filling out the info and she had the package open.

I should have screamed "stopped fondling my package!!!"

On a side note I created a account with FedEx and have them picking up the delivery. It's $5 extra but with gas prices and the closest FedEx store 30 minutes away in light traffic, it's worth it.

Seriously? Echoing what others have said in this thread, pack the shit out of your box, print out a label at home, take it to a drop off location (sans fragile stickers). They will probably ask if you need a receipt, and I usually say no and skedaddle my way out of the place.

Seems like I'm in the minority there. I always put both 'fragile' stickers on boxes and 'this way up' markings, and it hasn't been an issue. I've shipped boxes up to 50 lbs (typically stick to a max of 35 lbs per box) and it has not been a problem. I don't know how or why a fragile sticker would translate to kicking a box but apparently some BAs know something I don't. Can someone please shed some light on this? And like others, I use FedEx for shipping.

Always go to a Fedex in the ghetto.

I avoid the two close by for this reason.

I always go to FedEx Office locations (used to be Kinko's). Those folks are always so busy working on printing production jobs (and it's loud, so you can't hear any sloshing) that I usually just leave the box on the counter and tell them it's ready to go and I don't need a receipt. I assume once you're gone, the chances of them opening the box goes way down.
