Huh, for their triple can release today they're bringing back the original Eight Pounds Per BBL (Mosaic NEIPA) , along with the debut of Caviar Dreams (Brut IPA) and Son of Hop (Grisette).

Weird that 8 lbs keeps coming back.

First grisette I've seen in cans. Their releases have been hit or miss but cheers to that!

Son of Hop, a 4% Grisette. This one isn't distributed, so you'll have to go to their brewery or taproom to get it.

Grisettes aren't really my style, but I've had a number of them to get a feeling about their qualities.

This one kinda has those grainy notes, but it has a noticeable Noble? hop presence too which gives it a bitter, grassy edge. Not that it's an IPA, just that it's not particularly fruity/citrusy. More like what a Grisette would be if mixed with a Pilsner.

I'm not sure if I like it or not. But it's sure got tons of character for 4%.

Seven Stills mentioned something on Instagram a while back insinuating 8 Lbs was going to be a regular release.

6.5% Brut IPA w/Hallertau Blanc hops. Collab'd with Social Kitchen & Brewery.

I recognize that Brut IPA isn't everyone's jam, but I'd say it's mine. This one is super dry and crisp, but also has a hoppy bitterness to it. Kinda like an ale'ized version of a Pilsner? It's one of those beer styles that's not -exciting- but could be drunk everyday without getting tired of it, and would be very desirable in specific circumstances (hot days, post-exercise, etc).

I like this one more than others I've had.

El Jefe is obviously a Hefeweizen clocking in at 5.3% ABV. I have to admit that hefs are not really my thing. There's a liiiittle bit of banana/clove note in it, but it doesn't approach a Franziskaner or anything. This one falls more or less in line with other American Hefeweizens I've had. It's pretty competent, and that's all I can say about it.

Citracot - Collaboration with Barebottle. I think it's a 7% Citra hopped IPA with apricot puree. They don't really describe the hops anywhere, but just guessing based on name.

I had this on tap and was... underwhelmed honestly. It's just kind of a generic IPA. As it warms up a little, you can taste a little of the apricot, but if I wasn't told, I don't think I would have guessed. I think Seven Stills and Barebottle have brewed better.

Had my first Seven Stills brews with the end of June releases. The 8 Lbs. was a decent hazy, but man I was completely dissapointed in the Legal Limit DIPA. Funky strange aroma and taste, kinda skunky which makes no sense. Wasn't anywhere near the Crowd Favorite IPA from Temescal that came out at the same time.

Did you have it in a can or on tap? I haven't tried it yet (bought 2 cans but now I'm regretting it...)

It's really weird. On Instagram, 7S said it was one of the best beers they've ever made. And soon after, a few people said they hated it due to a Belgian-y taste. And 7S seemed to be puzzled by the feedback.

From the can, I think the canning date was 6/25/18. Drank it after the one from Temescal, then had a Prismatic from Ninkasi after it - was such a strange, funky weird fruit profile, far off from the other two. Hmm, maybe it would have come across better if I had it with some Belgian ales, didn't think of that. Well, now you know going in that it's not a typical juicy hazy.

It's not like a messy alcohol bomb or hard to drink - it's put together well and the feel is good. Hopefully we're all just being overly-critical snooty fruits, and you find the unique profile to be enjoyable. Cheers!

Just had my first 7S can the other night, 8 Lbs. It was fairy enjoyable, but there was some kind of taste on the back end that kept me from really loving it. I'd almost say it was bourbon-y, but I wonder if I was subliminally influenced by the thought that 7S produces spirits as well (?) Also, is there a difference between 8 Lbs and 8 Lbs per BBL, or is it just a slightly different name? What about the "008" at the bottom of the label?

Oh I didn't realize they changed it but even based on my pictures in this thread...

1st Release --> 003 Eight Pounds per BBL (All Mosaic)
2nd Release --> 008 Eight Pounds (Simcoe, Denali, El Dorado... and Mosaic?)
3rd Release --> 008 Eight Pounds (Pink Can Holder, Pink Boots Society Edition with their proprietary hop blend)
4th Release --> 008 Eight Pounds (They called it OG Eight Pounds, so is it all Mosaic again? This version I didn't try.)

Any thoughts on the back-end taste I was describing?

I never had the 4th release, so I have nothing to add! My favorite was actually the 3rd release (Pink Boots Society ver), and I didn't pick up any bourbon/spirit notes on that one.

What I will say is that while I have been a decent fan of their beers and think they've made some really great strides, the ones I've had from them the last few months have been very meh. Not sure why they've regressed.

Woah nelly. So this is a 8.7% ABV DIPA with Cascade, Centennial, Mosaic, Styrian Golding, Azzacca hops.

The profile of this is ... just kinda weird. Both in aromas and in flavor, you get a big dose of esters. I'm not really sure if it is Belgian yeast used, or if the hop profile in conjunction with the yeast gives it its character, but the end result tastes more like a Belgian Strong for sure. Not unlike their 747 release. But thankfully, this is much more drinkable than that mess of a big beer.

Again, I heard all the negativity regarding this beer and in the end, it's not my cup of tea. But if you go into it thinking "Belgian Strong", I think you'll be okay with it. I am. I just don't necessarily want my 2nd can.

#012. Here's a 8.2% Blood Orange DIPA with Equanot and Simcoe cryo hops. Does it actually contain blood orange? Not sure.

Released 6/6, now on 7/8, it's drinking like a WC DIPA - malty backbone and aggressive bitterness. To be fair, people said similar tasting notes even when fresh.

Me? It kinda tastes like an Imperial Red IPA, something in the same vein as Surly Furious. Which is to say, it's nothing special, but I kinda like it anyway. Like, in this post-haze world - some of it fantastic, most of it not - it's kinda nice to have something old school.

I don't really get their business model. They don't do a great job of providing details on their beer releases. Leading up to the "Legal Limit" release, they didn't specify anything about the beer other than it being a Double IPA. No picture of it poured in a glass, no hop bill. Then it turns out to be a dud of a beer and they act bewildered at people's reactions. Also 8 LBs being a changing recipe yet they never tell you what's changed.

Compare this to a brewery like Fieldwork, where every release comes with a hop bill, photo, tasting notes, etc.

Ha wow, there was no getting around how funky Legal Limit was, especially if you had it with Crowd Favorite from Temescal around the same time. I figured they're just starting off and figuring stuff out which is what seems to be the case. Of course $5/can is not "just figuring it out" pricing, which is the entire issue. Not solely coming down on them because a lot of folks in the area are doing it, but it's just really ridiculous when some of the best IPAs out there are around $2/can or bottle and these hazies come out for more than double that and you get a dud.
