I had that sort of that happen once and the guy looked at me being all calm, with my hands out. I've been 6 ft 3 inches and and somewhere around 210 for many years- a bit heavier now- and I honestly have never been in a fight. I did box, play football and particularly basketball. for many years and b-ball into college. It's the oddballs with guns these days that spook me.

Me, neither. Always been a lover and not a fighter, which really made me question why I would have the response that I used to have to these "insults". I figure, fuck it, the only one this situation's going to hurt is me. Definitely not worth it.

And of course, there is the intercourse of human events and other pleasures that years on the road have shown me multiple times.

Yes I've done a much better job this year to be a kindler gentler driver and it's worked for the most part. I don't take other folks stupidity so personal anymore. It's done wonders for my mood.

I prefer most barrel aged stouts fresh. I've tried aging many different ones and more often than not I feel the barrel character that I love and that the brewer intended me to experience is gone or changed in a way that I just don't like.

It seems like we're all just about on the same page here (aside from the chap swearing at kids). If kids and pets are being cool, doing their own thing and not bothering me, I'm all for it. I've taken my kids to many a taproom and I make sure they are quiet and respectful of others. It's pretty simple. Parents that don't parent and pet owners that think everyone wants to enjoy their pet are everywhere. It's not only an issue at a brewery or taproom or whatever. If kids are being shitheads and their parents just let them go nuts, then it's a problem. Just like it's a problem if some adult shithead is causing a raucous.

Bottom line is that it's hilarious when people against each other but they are arguing on the same side of the issue!

There are no “fresh” barrel aged stouts. They are already aged. I’m just busting your chops for fun, but my real point being that I wonder how many people actually consider that when they decide to “age” their bottles.

Probably about the same number as those who consider their IPAs are already aged before bottling?

Not many. A great many of these beers show obvious signs of oxidation when they're "fresh", additional age isn't going to help them out.

I have no problem with children in restaurants, and in fact I don't swear in restaurants, I act completely different in a restaurant because it is inappropriate not to act that way in a restaurant. It is completely appropriate to swear in a taproom, since it is an adult activity that leaves me free to do what I do when I am drinking with adults in adult situations. I do swear a lot, and sometimes I choose adult activities that allow me the freedom from your children.

I suggest to anyone who feels that they don't want their children to hear swear words, go to a restaurant, order a beer, order a meal, heck they might even have a children's menu, and stay out of taprooms with your children. If you must drag them with you to a taproom, (won't even wonder why you would choose that option over a more child friendly environment, I've given up asking, no one ever answers why they would choose a taproom over a restaurant that serves beer) I think you must expect your child will hear swearing.

This is the controversial beer opinions thread, and sorry if it is inconvenient for some folks that I choose adult activities to not be surrounded by your children. I had over twenty years of raising young children through two marriages, and somehow managed never to drive them buzzzed and never dragged them to adult activities. But I think the key word in that sentence is adult. Not family. Not kid friendly. Not they serve food, and have a child's menu. Adult. And frankly if someone doesn't care that I don't want their child under my feet, I equally don't care if he/she hear's me swear. Loudly.

I think the problem with this sub topic, which I alluded to earlier, is that people are reading others’ comments and placing them in the context of their own experiences/the places they like to go, and then getting their panties in a twist. Since we’re from a similar part of the country let’s talk about actual examples. I.e. these two places that I know we’ve both been to:

    a) Other Half Brewing. Very bar-like tap room with a large bar/bar stool area as well as some trestle tables. Hyped up hazy IPA-producing cash cow (whose beers I like for the record). Place is often rammed, generally with an age group in the 21-40 range, especially on weekends/release day. Personally I don’t think that’s a place to take kids. If I walked in and saw a bearded hippie cursing at the bar it would seem very natural and if there were a couple of kids running around my thought would be tough shit.

    b) Suarez Brewey. Go out of their way not to be part of the hype train. Focus on producing well crafted lagers/saisons. Very bright, open, chill tap room with no bar and just some tables and chairs. Some kids toys. Local farmer selling some herbs and vegetables in one corner. Owners have a two year old that often plays there. One of the owners specifically told me that they want the place to have that family-friendly pub vibe where locals can gather with their families, talk and have a beer. Said they specifically set the hours so as to avoid late night heavy drinking. Now if I walked in there and saw a bearded hippie shouting and cursing I think it would seem odd and out of place.

Would you agree with me here? Or you’d be cursing as loudly as possible in both instances?

In short I don’t think drinking by itself defines the activity as “adult”. It’s a product of the environment/setting as well.

I do agree, Suarez is, and tries to be, a kid friendly environment.

Different folks will have their panties in a twist if I mention that dogs aren't allowed at Suarez.

I think your points are valid in a broad sense but, at least around here, many taprooms seem to be actively trying to create an atmosphere that's much more conducive to families and much less conducive to loud, swearing adults. I tend to swear a lot myself generally (I'm from Boston, what the fuck do you want from me?) but even if there weren't kids around I think the taproom staff (and patrons) at a lot of places here would wonder why I was being such a boorish lout if I talked the way I do in private with friends.

I don't have kids myself but I've rarely experienced anything at a taproom in the Boston area that would make me hesitant to bring my nephew around when he gets older (and I look forward to that day because I need more pinball/skeeball buddies).

And just so everybody's on the same page, I'm assuming we're talking about liberally used big boy curse words here and not harmless shit like 'damn' and 'hell' or a brief "aww shit" if I spill my beer. If you can't handle that you shouldn't leave the house much less avoid taprooms.

ETA: hat tip to Rozzom for giving some good specific examples while I was typing
