Two I have seen several times and passed are 120-minute World Wide Stout. Just can't pull the trigger at $38/4-pack or $12 bottle. Same with World Wide Stout.

I remember buying the canned speedway when it first arrived fresh in my area. And it was fucking phenomenal. But on the downside, it became a shelf turd; the coffee and overall freshness deteriorated significantly. It became a shell of itself in probably 7-8 months.

Also definitely passed up on CBS for the price, even though I tried to convince myself I wanted to try it. Marking down alcohol prices where I live isn’t as easy as it seems, so it seems like you made the right choice with waiting!

I bought a 4 pack of 120 minute simply because it was at msrp. (37.50 here) I don't even enjoy it that much, I think I was more into that style the first time I tried it tho. World wide stout isn't all that either. I think I just dont enjoy many beers over 13-14%, they tend to get hot and syrupy. I'll just have bourbon if I need more than that I guess...

I would turn down a fruit or pumpkin beer, even if it was offered to me for free.

Last summer, while vacationing in Rome, I saw a bottle of Westy 12 for 19 Euros. I bit, figuring when am I ever going to see it again, especially in the States. It was the most delicious thing I've ever had in my life, although, I sometimes wonder if the hype, rarity and high cost psychologically forced me to love it.

Had a chance to try Bomb, but of course wifey wanted to share that particular beer, so I had to opt for a Vanilla porter instead cause i knew she wouldn’t like Bomb.

I pass on hype beers all the time. For me the cost usually out weighs the taste. However, I am not a guy who drops big money on beer. If I do get a special bottle release I usually get one, sometimes two. The most i’ve Bought is two bottles of BA Vietnamese SS.

I was just at my local bottle/homebrew shop. They got the new bottle logic release BA pasty stout and all I got was a fill up of my CO2. I was at the register and a girl runs in and asks for the bottle logic beer, not confident in her request, then follows it up with its for my boyfriend.

"Turning down" implies a free beer, so no I would not turn down someone buying me a beer (or offering a taste). Purchasing it? Different question... I feel like we can do better on these threads. As Melania reminds us all, "be best."

Not sure if this counts as 'passing' on a beer since it wasn't offered to me, but posting anyway since I had a chance and skipped it.

During a west coast toad trip we popped into De Garde a couple weeks ago. We raced down the coast to get there before they closed because I wanted some to-go bottles to lug back home. They had 2 vintages of Broken Truck available for on-site consumption but I passed because I would want to spend some time with a beer like that rather than try to pound the bottle down in 20 minutes before they close.

OP's question should be modified to include "for a reason other than price/cost" at the end because everything in the world is turned down all the time because of price/cost, it's probably the #1 answer no matter what you're asking about.

I feel like the price element of your example makes a big difference in the tone of the question.

Also, to me, "turn down" implies that it was offered to me, not being sold. But that's more of a semantics thing.

Anyway--to the question at hand: yes, I've passed over beers that were heavily hyped before. However, the typical reason is because it was either more than I wanted to pay or because it was a style that I wasn't fond of, so no matter how hyped it was, chances are that I wouldn't like it. And even then, if it's a lauded beer in a style I'm lukewarm about, I might try it to see if it could get me to look at that style in a new light, but it would still have to be a reasonable price.

As far as the example in this thread goes, I'm a bit biased because I love Abraxas, but $40+ for that beer if I've never had it would be enough to make me balk, given that the proper retail price is $20-25.

I would try a pumpkin beer. I have such high hopes but they always taste like a glass of spice. On your dime I'll try it, not on mine.

    Enjoy

For stores, I also won't buy over-priced bottles and usually at a bar I won't buy a large format of anything high ABV.

Though a year or so ago a bar I stopped at for lunch had bottles of Deal with the Devil for $40 or $50. I passed because I was solo. Looking back though, I should have bought it and shared it with someone...
