Wouldn't the term adjunct be correct in the sense of bourbon county stouts? The ingredients being added to the stout are not essential nor are they part of the brewing process. If they were essential to the brew I would think additive would be the correct term.

Officially, it's the other way around. As I understand it. Adding berries to BC to make a berry variant is not done ever during the brewing process, therefore it is an additive. If you added what in addition to the ingredients in a barleywine to make something different, that would be an adjunct.

Now you've opened up a whole new can of worms as Bourbon County is a special case. Where adjuncts and additives are added during or after brewing, the variant ingredients for BCBS base stout are called hype-balls and are neither added during brewing or after, but during the marketing phase of brewing which starts before they even fire up the brew kettle.

Really happy that the bait was taken. Lets get into the semantics now.

Close, but not quite. In your example above, berries could be an adjunct if they are part of the fermentation. Similarly, lots of things could be added to a barleywine that would keep it more or less within the style guidelines, but may in fact be adjuncts.

Adjunct = unmalted fermentable sugar (unmalted wheat, rye, corn, oats, or fruit, honey, maple syrup, etc.) added at any point (brewing, fermentation, even packaging).

It gets complicated because some of the grains listed above can be malted and used in that form, and I’ve seen varying definitions that still consider malted wheat or rye as “adjuncts”.

Hard to believe a thread about a beer we wont drink for 4+ months would devolve like this.

Is there a way I can set up a thread notification to go off when we get to the part with the complaining about the process for getting Prop Day tickets?

Don't worry, @Beer_Economicus is paging through the 2017 thread to give you a date ETA on when that happened last year. Give it a few... :stuck_out_tongue:

Only 30? Bush league man. They must not want it enough and therefore don't deserve to drink any Prop.

And yet no one has even started speculating about the bands that will be playing. I for one hope Dragon Abortion makes some space on their tour to appear.

I'm pretty sure LP Binny's actually was a dragon abortion last year. I'll be curious to see their allotment and any rules changes for this year.

As always, breweries gotta serve "the locals who support them." :flushed::flushed::flushed::rolling_eyes::rolling_eyes::rolling_eyes:
