Continuing my sour trend with Mispillion River War Goose, a “sports Berliner”, which they at calling a Berliner with added grape electrolytes.

Looking is the can it is a clearish purple color. Grape kook-aid, tart, wheat, touch of lacto. Easy to drink and crisp. Tastes like a nice Berliner that they somehow successfully added grape kool-aid mix to without tasting bad. Would rate it between a 4-4.25.

Honestly when I went to the brewery to pick up a 4-pack I thought it sounded stupid/not good and just wanted to try it for shits and giggles but I wish I had bought more, maybe I will be lucky and they will still have some next Sunday on my ride home, cheers!

Trying a new brewery today that has received some hype on my local beer group. It's from Birmingham, AL so I still consider it local-ish.

Pours a mostly clear golden orange with two fingers dense head.
Smells of grapefruit, orange zest, a little pine, and sweet malts.
Taste follows the nose, the honey like sweetness is a bit heavy for my tastes but the citrusy flavors try to balance it out.
    Medium body, slight alcohol presence.
Overall a good beer, not outstanding but good enough for me to try some of their other options.

It's always a joy to discover a new local beer (and add it to the BA database)...

I could not find any ABV data on the can or the brewery's web site, but by and large, the beer is tasty and nicely bitter for a session IPA. It has an overall citrus and pine resin flavor with a strong orange-like aroma.

And after finishing up some early day chores - lawn mowing and minor garage vent screen repair, and donating a bunch of firearms to the NRA, I'm kicking back in the Fortress of Solitude and await the Thomas Jefferson Hour to start on the radio.

Thanks all for your interesting posts so far. My only new beer today is Faith No S’more by Alvarado St. Brewery. There is no date on the can, but to my best knowledge it was canned last week. Thank you for reading my beer-powered rambling down below. Cheers!

Look: Pours a surprisingly pitch black, even on the stream. I poured pretty aggressively down the center, and there is a medium to large brown head that forms with very large and non-uniform bubbles. The head dissipates almost immediately though, and there isn’t even that typical ring of bubbles that sits around the edge. It’s strange, but the head on this resembles one one that you get while filling up a big gulp cup at a 7-11 soda machine. Obviously there is no lacing on the glass. (4.0)

Smell: I know that the can lists the supposed adjuncts that were added to the beer, but I don’t get much of those on the nose. In fact, it’s straight molasses, with maybe a little bit of dark chocolate. I’m disappointed that I’m not getting any S’mores here. The smell is fairly pleasant, just not as complex as I expected. (4.0)

Taste: Surprisingly the taste doesn’t follow the nose, and is quite a bit more complex. First of all molasses is still here in the front, but it’s balanced nicely by dark bitter chocolate. The dark chocolate becomes ever more prevalent as the beer warms. Great start! Graham crackers and marshmallows do come out as well, but only really in the end. The aftertaste is very nice as well — really does remind you of eating a S’more. I’m glad that at 9% the alcohol is not apparent in the taste or the smell. (4.5)

Feel: And this is where, the weirdness of this beer picks up again. It’s thin, I mean like really fucking thin, I mean like unbelievably thin. I have never had a stout that sits at 9.0% ABV and drinks like a 5% pilsner. I’m honestly not even exaggerating. I had Critical Band IPA by MT before this, and the body on the IPA was way bigger than here. IMO this thin body brings the beer down overall. (3.25)

Overall: Weird beer. I was excited to buy it, as I’ve never had a marshmallow stout before, and probably built it up too much in my head. It’s solid overall, as the most important factor, the taste, is on point, but the uber light body is a minus. FWIW, it was pretty cheap at only $5.50 for the can (remember that I’m dealing with CA prices). I’m happy that I got it, and I’m enjoying it now, but I’m not sure this is something that I need to have again. (4.0)

All of this comes down to: 4.13 (rDev +3%)

L - trace head atop a translucent yellow body.

S - apricots, oak, sugar, vanilla, salt.

T - massive apricot punch to the face. Very tart. Oak follows, with a small bit of funk. Hints of mushrooms, wheatgrass, and earth. No bitterness. Low sweetness. No booziness.

    F - medium-light body with minimal carb.

O - very refreshing, and has complexities from the oak that are beyond my ability to describe.

Next up is an offering from New Anthem Brewing in Wilmington, NC, they have been doing some really great IPAs and this one is no different. It is a Galaxy DDH IPA brewed with Citra, Galaxy and Centennial and rye called Thought Police clocking in at 7.8% but still very easy drinking. Really like this one it reminds me of a juicer Two Claw.

Appearance 4.5 - Pours bright hazy orange with huge white fluffy head that leaves lost of spotty lacing around the glass.

Aroma 4 - The aroma leans to the sweet tropical side with lots of orange, mango and tangerine coming out. The rye is also noticeable which adds some nice depth.

Taste 4.5 - The taste is much more balanced with the rye and the much more mild tropical mango and tangerine. there is also some grapefruit and orange peel which makes it much less one dimensional. No signs of alcohol in the aroma or taste.

Feel 4.25 - Medium body pretty smooth aside from a slight bite on the initial taste.

Overall 4.36 - Really well done IPA, the aroma lead me to believe it was much less balanced than it actually was. great flavors and easy drinking.

    New Beer Sunday: An IPA

Afternoon NBSers with an alert for folks in SE PA about a newly canned local IPA worth looking for.

After dodging a few scattered rain showers and rain drops while running errands, it’s time to get down to the Nuts and Bolts. (Literally, since a big pile of them in the basement storage room need sorting.)

But first, in his start up today @lordofthewiens told a golf joke. Not being a golfer I didn’t have a joke to reply with at that time, but during this morning’s trip to the gym I remembered one I’d heard when a young relative was into elephant jokes.

You remember elephant jokes? They go like this:

Q: Why did the elephant paint his toenails red?
A: So he could hide in the strawberry patch.

Q: How can you tell when you have two elephants in your refrigerator?
A: You can hear them giggling.

So here are a couple of elephant golf jokes:

Q: Why did the elephant take off his socks at the golf course?
A: He got a hole in one.

Q: What time is it when an elephant steps on your golf ball?
A: Time to get a new ball.

Now on to this afternoon's new beer which is a relatively low ABV (6.0%) IPA called The Snuffler from The Sterling Pig, a small local brewery here in SE PA.

As usual my review, subject to revision until the beer is finished, can be found here.

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/41165/181201/?ba=drtth#review

The aromas/flavors of this beer are fairly complex with both the classic IPA grapefruit and pine but also some touches of tropical fruit and a bit of both floral and earthy character with nothing being overpowering. Enjoyable and easily drinkable this is a solid IPA worth trying. I could see having this one as part of my regular rotation and could easily drink more than one in a row. The best IPA I’ve ever tried? No, but well above average and worth giving a try if you happen find it on tap or freshly canned.

    Cheers, all!

Remedy Bulwark Imperial Stout, 9% ABV, 41 IBU. Pours black with not much head. Nose is slight vanilla. Taste is tart raspberry, some vanilla, moderate bitter close. Decent mouthfeel, overall excellent.

Happy Sunday NBS players. Windy as all hell here on the island but the breeze is a nice relief with the humidity. Another lazy Sunday on the schedule for me. Rocking some light yard work followed by grilling and some Mets/yanks b-ball tonight.

My new beer today is The Breakfast Klob, oatmeal stout w/ coffee and lactose, from Mikkeller brewing. The brew checks in at 8% abv. Mikkeller has really hit big time in terms of distro here and the best thing is that some of the stores out here (the ones I go to) sell in single can format.

A black pour yielding a frothy tan head. The nose is rather mild with malt. A rather clean and sweet start on the drinking. A real decedent quality to it. Very smooth on the flow with a slightly bitter and robust finish. The coffee flavor comes off strongest and remains on the sweeter/sticky side. Good undertones of the chocolate malt but the lactose is not too prevelant. Additional flavor notes of caramel, tofee, and vanilla. Moderate mouth feel with the sweet flavors giving a good stick and linger after each sip.

Overall, pretty nice stuff. Nothing game changing but a solid offering for sure. I really enjoyed beer geek breakfast too. It’s funny, but as I get older I’m finding that the coffee stout/porter is becoming on of my favorite styles. I’m in the low 4’s here players.

Beers going down really easy today, next up Palatine Pils brewed by Suarez Family Brewing. Like anything else I have had from these guys this is top notch. On a 90 degree day this is money.

Appearance 4.25 - Just a hint of cloudiness in this yellow Pilsner, nice white cap not alot of lacing.

Aroma 4.25 - Light citrus, grassy aroma big bready/cracker very light spice.

Taste 4.5 - Super clean and crisp, nice spicy taste really bready with just a touch of lemon.

Feel 4.5 - Super light, clean and crisp.

Overall 4.43 - So light and refreshing, if you do not like this pilsner then the style is not for you.

I really enjoyed the regular version of Hooligan from Scofflaw so seeing a double version I had to get a six pack.

Slightly hazed orange with a finger of white head.
Smells of grapefruit, pineapple, some underlying earthy dankness.
Hearty malt backbone on this one, the hops dominate the taste though. Slight candied aspects to the citrus and pineapple flavor.
Medium bodied with alcohol well hidden.
Overall another tasty one from Scofflaw.

New beer #4. Only the second posted review after @Lingenbrau . He liked it a bit more than I did.

    All the Pulp - Fieldwork
    TIPA - 11% abv
Unknown canning date (early June as per Instagram)
    Score: 3.99 (-5.9% rDev)

    L - 1/2 finger head atop a turbid orange-brown body.

S - herb, orange, pine, melon.

T - unusual. At first it’s orange, but the citrus is then washed over with a pungent herbal wave. Not dank really. More of a healthy vegetable smoothie taste. Potato, cabbage, kale. Very smooth middle. Low bitterness. Moderate-low sweetness. Moderate booziness.

F - medium-full oily body with average carb.

O - hides its abv well, but the vegetal aspect is offputting.

Last new beer of the day is from Veil Never Never Forever Forever a double passionfruit Gose. It is super juicy and very tart, like drinking a tart dry glass of passionfruit juice.

Appearance 4.25 - Pours thick turbid orange color with decent white head that quickly dissiaptes to a thick ring around the glass. No lacing.

Aroma 4.5 - Huge fresh sweet passionfruit aroma, tart salty

Taste 4.75 - Tons of passionfruit, drinks like a glass of juice. Salty, super tart the sweet and tartness are balanced just a touch of acidity.

Feel 4.5 - Thick creamy puckering mouthfeel, pretty dry finish.

Overall 4.59 - This thing has it all, super juicy up front with mouth puckering tartness on the finish. Great Gose.
