Good afternoon and happy New Buoy Sunday, BAs. Yesterday, we took a short drive up to Woodland, Washington to enjoy the historic Cedar Creek Grist Mill and its surroundings. Founded in 1876, the mill has been mostly restored to its original glory by volunteers as well as operated and maintained by them. During the mid 1900’s, it went through a hard life filled with vandalism, theft, destruction, and even a fire we were told. But now it's alive and well, and provided with free demonstrations and freshly made flour products given to interested visitors. Unfortunately, the water level was too low to run on our behalf. Still made for some great pics though:

And naturally, since we were in the area, might as well enjoy a spontaneous hike with some blackberry picking, right?

I was going to have a beer from Washington today to go with our trip but I didn't pick any up, so I went with another beer from Buoy which is from the uppermost Oregon corner, only separated from Washington by one of the largest rivers in the country, as well as the Pacific Ocean. Close enough.

    Buoy Brewing
    IPA

In classic Northwest fashion, Buoy IPA pours nearly crystal clear and a lightly burnt orange color. A moderate amount of bubbles persistently ascend to keep a cream colored and smooth foam afloat. As each sip is drawn, small spots remain, clinging lazily to the glass.

The smell is bright and invigorating. Heavily influenced with citrus zest and pine, but mellow notes of caramel, white bread, and melon are buried below the surface. Staples of old and new converge, and it is magnificent.

All elements transfer well into the flavor, and I'm surprised to find it not overpowered by citrus. Even keeled actually, as melon and citrus mirror their impact. A sweet malt, though only minimally caramelized, come through in the middle just before that classic forest gives it's punch and final blow.

I was also surprised to find this less intense feeling than expected. It's smooth with added heft to its body, almost a bit creamy even. It starts a tad sweet and then gives into a healthy bitterness. There is no detection of it's elevated abv (for a standard IPA), and altogether is dangerously easy to drink.

Buoy continues to impress me. From the facility itself, its location, and most importantly their quality products. This IPA is no exception. Few breweries I want to try everything from. Buoy is now one on the short list that I do. If it says Buoy, I'm buying.

After my official review, I gave Buoy IPA a rating of 4.17, with an rDev of +7.2%.

Cheers everyone, and I will see you all soon!

This is the only way I was able to try 10 as well - the Firestone on the shelves that we have seen has been less than fresh, and definitely doesn't seem to be moving quickly!

Made a Nashville beer run on Friday, and picked up my first from Southern Grist. After working out in the hot sun most of the day, I’m ready for a new beer.

This is Southern Grist - [Insert Juicy Pun]

Very respectable NEIPA style DIPA. Tons of juicy aromas and flavors with an outstanding mouthfeel. I look forward to sampling more of their beers!

Poured from 16 oz can dated 8/3/2018. Caption of fresh squeezed of the bottom of the can.

A: Very hazy and pale yellow with 1-2 finger white head. Decent retention and lacing. Looks a little like frothy pineapple juice.

S: Pineapple, mango, orange, peach, and apricot. Underlying tones of grapefruit rind.

T: Pineapple, mango, peach, apricot, and tangerines. Wonderful combination of juicy fruits with the right amount of dank hops.

M: Medium body with average carbonation. Soft creamy texture with an excellent mouthfeel.

O: Excellent NEIPE style DIPA. One of my first from Southern Grist and hopefully not my last.

In need of an APA fix:
    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]
Brazos Valley Brewing's Willin', an American pale ale

Grapefruit explodes off the head with little else coming to mind. A little cilantro/pico de gallo maybe and some biscuit/bread malt sweetness. At times the sweetness is enough to give it an orange aroma. The flavor follows the aroma very closely with a little more biscuit sweetness and less grapefruit, though the hop bitterness grows and grows as you get into the glass, especially in the aftertaste.

    The review:
    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/33820/273569/?ba=Premo88#review
    3.85 (0% rDev)

Less malt might put this near perfect range for my taste ... less ABV, more chance for the hops to shine? That'd be good, but as it is this beer is mighty tasty and more proof Brazos Valley Brewing's brewer knows what s/he is doing. It's very similar to BVB's IPA Mama Tried — close enough that I want to do a side-by-side just for fun.

    Cheers!

A nice day to jump behind the wheel of the Weirdsmobile. A gift from my sister whose purveyor rightly insisted I had not had this before.
Cloudy gold with a sustained head, very fluffy with good lacing.
Pine and citrus at arms length with subtle cookie sweetness up close.
Hoppy up front with some pepper/spiciness and a little funk in the finish.
A little too much body that the carbonation can't cut through.
The saison road is pretty wide (and my 3.66 composite score is between the lines but a little towards the breakdown lane) but this one may have sideswiped an IPA along the way.

Pours a deep amber coloration with a tiny, fizzy, quickly vanishing head and some floaters on the final pour. Smells of red berries, white grape, tannins and oak, with a certain vinous note.

Taste starts out rather sweet, with fruity notes of red berries: raspberry, redcurrant, white grape and light citrus. Then a medium, moldy sourness creeps in that's not very funky and more acidic/lactic in character. Strong notes of tannins and oak as well, which lend quite a vinous quality to this. Some light, spicy esters and musty earthiness are present too.

Finishes with a medium sourness and some tannins lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and low carbonation.

There's a lot going on here and while this lends a good complexity to this, the balance could be better in my opinion. This starts out way too sweet for me and the vinous character isn't really my cup of tea either. I would have liked a little funk, which this beer clearly isn't about though. If you like sweet, fruity sours with a strong vinous character then you are probably going to enjoy this quite a bit.

Great Sunday afternoon, fellow New Beer Samplers and commentators. Yesterday, the wife and I drove up to New York State to visit some favorite breweries. So I'm dedicating this NBS to Rockland County - just over the border. My first review is Rocklandia, a NEIPA collaboration among five Rockland County brewers: Industrial Arts, District 96, Defiant, Kuka, and Gentle Giant. This is a tasty 6.7% American IPA with a classic NE appearance and a nice blend of lemon, peach, melon, rye, wheat cracker, and a bitter, flavorful hop bill. It also features some nice spice notes. Here's my full review:

    4.07/5 rDev +2.3%
    look: 4 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4

Industrial Arts collaborated on this American IPA with fellow Rockland County, NY brewers District 96, Defiant, Kuka, and Gentle Giant. Canned on 7/26/2018 and poured into Industrial Arts pint glass. It has a classic NEIPA appearance: opaque, golden-yellow color with nearly a finger of long-lasting, foamy, bright-white head and a creamy sheen of lacing inside the glass. Its fruity nose features lemon, peach, honey, and sweet oats. The taste is much more tart than the smell would indicate. It opens with a blast of tart citrus but a balancing dose of peach, melon, honey, and oats quickly follows. There are also notes of rye and wheat cracker, and a bitter, flavorful blend of Azacca, Motueka, and Chinook hops. It finishes more spicy than bitter. This ale has a crisp, lite mouth feel with pleasant carbonation, and its 6.7% ABV gives it a nice pop without being too heavy. Overall, Rocklandia is tasty and fun to drink. Sometimes collaborations of more than two brewers get messy - this one succeeds very well. I hope the Rockland brewers create another beer together soon!

I hope you're all enjoying your new beers today. As always, reading your reviews is a highlight of the week. I'll be back shortly with another Rockland County offering. Cheers!

Good evening NBS, hope everyone is enjoying the end of the weekend once again. Normal weekend once again after a busy work week. I had a couple trades I was slacking on, so I got those boxed up this afternoon. I can't believe Meijers doesn't carry boxes anymore(at least at the moment). I had to reuse the inbound supply on hand. Glad I didn't throw them out. Unlimited new beers at the moment after the trades, and another haul yesterday morning with more Speciation sours. I have 5 new Jolly Pumpkin waiting on me later this week. Usual laundry, and bottle returns, and grocery run done for the week.

    New beer:

Very good APWA. Fantastic head retention and thick soapy lacing on the glass. Aromas and flavors of lemon zest, orange peel, pear, and red apple yeast; with moderate wheat, cracker, white bread dough, lightly toasted biscuit malts; light herbal/grassy/peppery hops and yeasty earthiness. Very mild herbal/grassy/spicy bitterness and wheat tang/tartness on the finish. Medium carbonation and body; very creamy/bready/grainy wheat and light sticky hops/peels in the mouthfeel. Lightly increasing lingering bitter dryness. Very flavorful and pretty refreshing, 4.5%. Not watery at all, would have preferred a lighter body. Well balanced rich pale/wheat malts, American wheat yeast, citrus peels, and mild earthy hops against sweetness. Well done style example. 3.76
    [IMG]

Excellent DIPA! Great head retention and soapy lacing on the glass. Aromas and flavors of big grapefruit, tangerine, peach, pineapple, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, guava, gooseberry, citrus peel/rind, peppercorn, and pine hops; with moderate toasted biscuit, light honey/caramel malts; and herbal, floral, grassy hop earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, grassy, peppery bitterness on the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-plus body; creamy/bready/grainy malts, some sticky hops, and light resins/rinds in the mouthfeel. Lightly increasing lingering resin dryness, no hop astringency. Very smooth, not overly aggressive, mildy warming 8%. Citra was definitely more earthy/peppery than expected. Great balance of juicy, dank, and earthy hop complexity, with a nice bready malt backbone. Mild residual sweetness with matching lingering bitter dryness. Well worth getting again. 4

    Round #2 NBS
I hear a lot of drink local here. I try to buy from Indiana breweries when I can but it almost always ends in disappointment. I stopped by Daredevil in Speedway (Indy) on my way home from northern Indiana Friday and had one beer on tap and bought two 4 x 16oz canned packs to bring home. The rauchbier was packaged in February and the "new" Marzen I am about to share with you was packaged in March.
It's a little hard to review this beer in light of the date, but I did find positive along with the negative.
    The review:
16oz canned 3/26/18 (5 months ago, even though it was purchased at the brewery this weekend) poured into.5L krug at fridge temp, no ABV listed on label. The beer pours bright golden orange amber with quickly fading nearly white head. The head dissipates quickly leaving a few bubbles around the glass. The aroma is faint with a little yeast and possibly bread. The taste is toasted bread and a glimpse of faded hops. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, lowly carbonated and dry in the finish. Overall, good. I'll say I'm very disappointed that I bought a 5 month old Marzen at a brewery. This might have been very good fresh.

I failed to mention that the beer was cleanly lagered with no off flavors.

@JackHorzempa, this is why a big part of the country will always be dependent on large regional and even national brewers. My Sierra Nevada that was brewed in NC and purchased off a grocery shelf was far superior to, not just this beer, but every Indiana brewed lager I have ever had. It was also 4 months fresher than the Daredevil offering. If you live in a state, let alone city, with great fresh local beer, count yourself blessed.
Cheers all and enjoy the new beer in mug!

Greetings, fellow NBSers, and thanks to @cjgiant for getting us underway.

It's currently 77° and clear, the coolest it's been this time of day in weeks. Even the smoke from the fires seems lesser than it's been for some time. Most of the last week has been very near record settling in terms of temperatures. WhileThursday and Friday were officially no higher than 102° at my workplace, where the "official" readings are made, at the other airport, Felts Field, it was reported by the local news stations as having reached 107°. That's about thirty degrees above my preference. And while it's been, so far, not as apocalyptically smoky as last summer, this has been the summer where my childhood asthma has returned at full flood, so I'm appreciating the seeming respite.

Today, I'm kicking things off with a "juicy" IPA from Pelican, among the first of their beers to be canned:
    https://www.beeradvocate.com/user/beers/?ba=woemad
This was a short-fill, and was flat as a pancake. I'll give it a shot again sometime and will probably prefer it then, but this should never have been sold. Clearly, Pelican has some issues to sort out with their new canning line.

Back with something else a little later.
