Yeah, it's fair. Hell, I know I didn't enjoy this year as much because how absolutely muggy it felt. Then again, I was also disappointed last year that I was waiting for so long at the front when they opened the back door.

Regardless, I'm sure I'll be happy with the bottle. Haven't been truly disappointed yet. Space Trace not included.

That's what blind tastings are for. Doing a vert blind takes any preconceived notions out and just leaves you with what your palate tells you. If you're ever going to compare any beers, blind is the only way to be objective. Anything else is suspect. At least that's what I do if I'm trying to objectively compare 2 or more beers.

Don't tell that to a sommelier tasting the same wine over the course of 40+ years.

Ultimately in both beer and wine you're dealing with a multitude of variables and various living organisms. Change and variation is inevitable. It's not an exact science, and it can't be perfect without killing the soul of it.

While I genuinely agree with you, I think his point is that it is impossible to compare B4 with any other batch at the same time because any other batch already has age on it, unless you have a time machine.
But yes, blind tastings are the best.

We should start posting FO4 sightings in our local areas.

    I mean you guys should.

I’m local to LA and all of my local places are having limit 1 with a purchase of 1 or 2 other beers. Is the limit 4 stuff in OC?

Except for macro crap like Budweiser, Coors, etc ... each batch is spot on and consistent in its crapiness ... which actually if you think about it, is pretty impressive

It is impressive, I will give them that, and I don't turn down a fresh pour of Miller Lite when options are limited or I'm trying to take it easy, but it also points back to my "soul" comment...

I've read that brewing macro brews like Budweiser with such precise consistency is actually a very challenging task.

    At Bottle Logic now.

The Lost Colony is boozy as fuck. It smells and tastes like rum was poured directly into it.

FOCOCO is good, but I do not prefer fresh coconut it's all about the toasted to me.

FO Maple is great like the subtle but present maple.

FOMO is a great coffee beer.

Nutella version tastes like that face nut extract that the last strong ale had.

Plain old FO? Fucking fantastic....not a vanilla bomb, but it's awesome. Tastes like powdered sugar. Probably my favorite FO batch so far. Bummed I traded so much of it.

Yes absolutely, especially over multiple, separate facilities. Not taking anything away from that.
Got one on hand--was really looking forward to ALL TEH NUTZ...will sit on until deep Winter now.

I opened a bottle of FOb4 tonight and think it’s still fantastic. Cold i could hardly taste the vanilla but as it warmed up it grew and grew into the phenomenal beer we know and love. So don’t drink that shit cold!

Confirmed. The beer first opened at 45 is forgettable. As it warmed the vanilla really came through.

the only upside to this is that they serve their beers really cold and boiling hot water is perfect to warm up those 8 oz pours

The pastry stout crazy must have desensitized some people’s palates. How anyone could pop a bottle of FOb4 and describe the experience as “no vanilla” is beyond me.

Exactly. "Vanilla bombs" seem too one dimensional to me. This b4 has the perfect amount of vanilla that allows you to still taste the barrel and the fact that it's a stout.

Someone mentioned the jaw-dropping price of vanilla beans this year (very accurate) in their suggestion that we may have aged FOB4 with a lesser dosage than previous vintages -- that's quite inaccurate.

The dosing rate and ratio of real vanilla beans are truly what makes Fundamental Observation unique. We don't skimp or cut corners on this -- ever. That being said, we have come to expect natural fluctuations in agricultural crops from year to year.

(Here's an illuminating article from The Economist if you're interested in a quick read about what's been happening in the vanilla market over the last few years.)

To me, FOB3 tasted like chocolate chip cookie dough with a bourbon backbone. I started to really enjoy it after three or four months in the bottle. With FOB4, I'm impressed by the balance of where everything is at right now. It drinks soft and round, like it's been packaged for months.

Blend away! A couple of our beer tenders have recently taken to creating 'Rum and Cokes' with StarCore [Altbier finished with agave syrup and cola spices] and a splash of The Lost Colony [super-wet rum barrel aged Imperial Porter].

A few Weeks of Logic ago some brilliant madman created Space Jam [Space Trace + Jam the Radar]... 9.36/10, would slam again.
