Passed by 3 Floyd’s the other day. Decided to stop in and grab a fresh sixer of ZD as I hadn’t had it in over a year. Mostly because I felt like the quality had dropped off. These bottles of Zombie Dust are fantastic. Huge grapefruit aroma refreshingly bitter. It’s not EXACTLY the same beer but I’d say quality is up. At least on these bottles.

I was speaking with a sales rep from FFF at Crafts and Drafts here in MKE a few months back. We had a nice conversation about ZD and how there was a change in the recipe for a period when citra hops weren’t plentiful. He told me they have gone back to a 100% citra hop beer recently (back in April). Maybe he was full of it, but seemed knowledgeable. He stated that the hazies go against the FFF brewers philosophies and due to shelf life they don’t see them as viable. If the fad doesn’t go away though, I’m not sure they will have a choice.

they made a hazy IPA (Gun/VCR/PhD or something like that) and the whole time i was drinking it i was like “bring me a Permanent F*cking Funeral.”

I had Thicc Bois when I was there recently. Really regretted getting it. It wasn’t too bad, but it seems like they’re just making them to pacify the masses. I really don’t like NE style to begin with, so I choked it down and proceeded to knock back a few Savage Flows instead.

i always try the new taproom-only beers which is obviously a gamble and i know everyone wants haze but i’ll be damned if that PF Nitro (from i cant remember when now) was one of the best DIPAs i’ve ever had. they need to bottle that again soon.

You're not damned. This is a hole in the craft universe.

I do enjoy hazy beers and I had the gun/vcr beer at DLD and it wasn’t for me. PF was one of the first beers that really turned me on to IPAs and will always hold a place in my heart. I am just saying I think haze sells and people that were buying ZD of PF are now going to Corridor or Forbidden Root. I don’t think they have to all together avoid hazy beer either. I could be wrong but I don’t think FFF has ever bottled or canned anything hazy.

has anyone tried the new berliner on at the taproom?
to my knowledge they’ve never canned anything period (another way they go against the grain). i didn’t have the shreds session was that hazy?

I asked about DL and the person there say maybe in the most 'I actually have no idea' manner possible. He did say Crack the Skye would be there tomorrow. I don't know how rare that is considered. Fingers crossed for DL variants.

Yeah FFF doesn’t have to do hazy ipa’s but I think the non-move to a canning line is a big mistake. I think 4 packs would actually revitalize some of their core beers, at least for awhile. Super fresh ZD (from the brewery and not 2 weeks later through distro) still does it for me

Not to mention their designs would translate extremely well to cans. I’d imagine they’d opt for the black style cans like the Speedway Stout ones. I don’t think a 4pk of any of their core beer would feel sufficient. Although, I’d say ditch the bomber format all together for 4pk of 12oz cans.

So much hope for something that will most likely never happen.

To be fair, most of the established brands are succeeding just fine without having a NEIPA. Lagunitas, Bells, Founders, Surly - along with local breweries like Revolution and Half Acre - are doing A-ok in terms of sales.

Gumballhead is still a delicious beer, and still a big hit. $18 4-pack beers that are only available at the location they’re brewed is still a niche slice of an already niche market.

Crack the skye was on 2 Friday’s ago when it was a War Pig Popup for the anniversary. So that’s a pretty safe bet.

Lagunitas has Born Yesterday, which may not exactly be a NEIPA (NEAPA, perhaps?), but it’s a damn good beer that i look forward to every year.

The prevalence of cans these day proved format doesn't matter, what's in the container does.

Those other companies have all sorts of styles, not just hops. 3 Floyd's bassically distributes...hoppy shit.

Yea they sometimes have stuff like wig splitter around, but they do nothing in 6 packs right now but hops and Robert the Bruce. Or maybe they added something but it does not show up near me.

It's not a fair comparison to compare them to those that you mentioned.

My point was that 3 Floyd’s is doing just fine with their core beers. They’re not being “passed by” because they didn’t jump on the haze craze, or anything else.

I for one love going to a non descript bar or restaurant and seeing Gumballhead, alpha king, and zombie dust readily available around the city, next to daisy cutter and anti-hero.

We’re such a small segment of the craft buying market.

Founders Built a craft empire on the back of All-Day IPA. Sure the move to 15-packs helped, but it was a monster seller when it was in 6-packs too.

I still love all of three floyds beers. I just wish they were more affordable. That’s my largest issue with them, and if that’s the case, they still must be selling pretty damn well, because I’m not seeing a lot price drops or old sixers lying around at most places.
