    More affordable?

Are you referring to hops? What are you paying for those? It's extremely affordable in most areas I have ever had access. $2ish/bottle.

3 Floyds is a big operation now. These smaller breweries don't have the core business so they need to ride the wave of the NE IPA. It's definitely biting into 3 Floyds business but they have other growth strategies. If they started releasing the collab they did with Forbidden Root (Stay Lit) regularly, it would quickly become one of their most popular beers.

$15 to $16 for a bomber of permanent funeral in Ohio after the latest price increase. Great brew but not what I would classify as affordable.

The stores are taxing. $12 at the brewery right now... Maybe I am brainwashed but I think that is reasonable for a bomber. I know, I know... bombers are a rip off compared to six packs. So, if you don’t like bombers buy a 6 pack of ZD for $12.

The prevalence of cans these days proves that format does matter, not as much as what’s in the container but still a meaningful amount

@HouseofWortship’s wording is kind of confusing. I think it’s stating that cans are finally overcoming the stigmas of the “only shitty macro beers come in cans” that some people still hold to be true.

But on the other hand format indeed does matter, logistically, environmentally, and qualitatively. Like...a shitload.

That's not one of their core lineup of beers - it is in bomber format. It's only brewed like, what, 4 times a year or something? Or at least for awhile I was not seeing it consistently at all here in Indiana over this past year, and specifically I seem to recall reading in this thread that it went something like 6 months or something without being bottled?

Anyway, the point is you can't really say "they are expensive" as a broad statement when you are picking one of their specialty brews that aren't in everyday packaging. It's like saying TG is expensive despite Pseudo Sue being ~$10 4 packs because Morning Delight is a $50 bomber.

It's crazy to me that people think 3 Floyd's is expensive as 6 packs unless their stores are just crazy jacking up their prices. They have always been very affordable. In fact, they are one of the breweries normally cited in Chicago threads for "That IPA is too expensive!...I'll take a ZD 6 pack any day over that for $X less and be happy."

Three Floyds is expensive, IMO. Their 6 packs are on average $3 or 4 more expensive than other breweries. If you go to the brewery, they are $12 now. So $2 more than average.

    So what are you paying?

$3-4 more than other breweries makes it sound like at least $18 for a 6 pack.

It doesn't matter to the consumer. You think if More started releasing their BA stouts in a 20oz PET bottle they wouldn't sell out? Do you think if BCBS variants were released in 32oz resealable metal growlers they wouldn't sell out? In craft beer the container format is nearly inconsequential to availability... Cans have sprung up because the margins are better. If I can move 4 16oz cans (64oz) for the same or more than the cost of 12oz 6 packs (cans or bottles, doesn't matter, but totals 72oz) why wouldn't a brewer do that all day long? The only choice you have is whether you do buy it or you don't and given the demand most people take whatever format is rammed down their throats because they don't want to miss out....

If this mattered to anyone we would all be using refillable growlers or drinking something more environmentally friendly than beer....

With regards to IPA offerings, the format of 12oz bottle vs. 16oz can vs. 12oz can doesn't really matter much to me. But you go up to 22oz or 25oz bottle, and it definitely does. I skip those format IPAs more and more, and I actually cannot even recall the last time I bought one even though I use to have a different mindset not that long ago. I would guess that's even more of a case for a casual, non-hard core beer drinkers. Seeing something in that format and with that high price point has to be a turn off (probably... I don't really know what those people think. I'm not friends with people who don't love beer with a passion).

Stouts and sours are a different story. I'll take whatever format you give me, as long as I enjoy whats inside.

I think the size of the container matters. Mikerphone would be selling their IPAs more quickly if they were in 16 ounce cans. Or even if they just used the 12 oz bottle format that they choose to use sporadically.

The type of container is probably a lot less consequential, I'll agree - but I do think at the moment you're better off having cans than bottles.

For stouts and sours, less important.

I would argue that isn't the container, but the pricing. Would you be more apt to buy a 750ml of Mikerphone IPA if it was $7.99 or 9.99 vs whatever it is now($15+)?

About the only true craft 6 pack I can get at $10 is Founders. And even they are borderline not true craft anymore. $12 for a 6 pack is a steal IMO.
