    Sometimes.

A handout means you take and give nothing. This program results in a net positive to the city. It's a clever program designed specifically by the city to benefit the city. It's not free cell phones for everyone.

Sounds like a pretty magical program you got there. I'm not sure why all development isn't TIF if what you are saying is true.

If this were a good idea financially they would be getting money from a bank not the government.... I see it as a handout because when they close the doors due to over expanding who is left with the bill

    You are absolutely correct.

I don't know if you read the article but here are some points. Currently, they are at capacity in fact they already expanded from 10k to 16k square feet so they can't expand anymore. Also, they are brewing at two places by merging the two breweries Lift Bridge will continue to be up 30% per year. They fully understand Beer Advocate people are likely not their demographic but the general public has shown loyalty to the tune of brewing 26k projected barrels of beer this year. Not bad for a brewery who has improved drastically since 10 years ago when they open the doors.

Are they really brewing at Two different places? I'm not sure. I only read 2 of the linked articles. I'm not login to read the other. I think they have a very optimistic sales growth forecast.

So they own 10,000 square feet where the taproom and brewery are located on Tower Dr across the ailey they are leasing 6,000 square feet where the science stuff is located and finally they brew at Third St. Brewery. If we add them all up together a 34,000 square foot brewery is perfect for today but maybe not for tomorrow. IMO, they should build a 40,000 square foot brewery.

In a (limited scope) it is "too bad" that they have to go back to a model which involves a contract arrangement with Cold Spring*, but on the other hand it is a necessary stepping stone to a much, much larger brewery down the line.

*And Third Street c.f. Cold Spring does excellent work all the way around.

I find this back and forth MacGrove guy very hateful and mean and this thread should be locked down.

Go grab some greasy fish and chips at Groveland Tap and a nice $3 pint and relax.

I'm not sure what Lift Bridges business plan is. But is sounds like they want to expand there distro area. Why not Build a brewery in Madison,/Milwaukee/Fox Valley and/or build one out in the Dakotas. Brew the beer were you sell it. Ya I know there is cost with all the Licensing etc. People want local beer and local tap rooms

PS.......... LOL at the post before this one

The Growler has an interview with Lift Bridge president and CEO Rosy Scenario... er, Dan Schwarz. I'm highly dubious that craft beer will pick up an additional five to ten percentage points of market share in the state in the next five to ten years. I'm pretty sure Minnesota will become the world's number one importer of passion fruit if it does. For Lift Bridge's sake, I sure hope that the success of the new brewery doesn't depend on that excessively optimistic forecast. Also, to claim that Minnesota is "in the top-five states when it comes to quality and creativity" is nothing short of delusional, in the unlikely event that he's not just posturing for consumers and the industry. At least he acknowledges that "everything takes longer than you expect, and that it will cost more than you think it will."

On the optimistic end of that, I agree. (That would be a 50% increase in share in 5 years; requiring a growth of ~8.5% per year.)

On the low end of his range, it doesn't look so delusional. (That would be a 25% increase in share in 10 years, requiring a growth of ~2.5% per year.)

The growth may be even less, since the number is market share, not volume. Gaining share in a declining market requires less actual growth.

    (Caveat: check for math errors....)

Rumor has it the brewery has around $8 to $10 million dollars in equipment, land and the building. They want to build a $10 million but I would guess they would end building a $15 million dollar 40,000 square foot brewery with ability to expand around the open acres of land around the brewery. This year they will end up brewing around 30,000 barrels of beer, a 30% increase over the previous years 30% increase. IMO, this isn't a big crap shoot as I know most people on Beer Advocate don't drink their beers or follow them.

How many of those 30,000 barrels were filled with, and how much of the 30% annual growth is attributable to, Mango Blonde?

Or their root beer/cream soda? I see pretty big displays of that stuff in Target.

If I remember correctly 30,000 barrels will be equal to around 420,000 cases of beer. Last year they brewed around 5,000 cases of Mango Blonde and this year they brewed 5 times that so off the top of my head if my math is correct they will have brewed around 25,000 cases of Mango Blonde this year.

They sell a lot of soda but it's not a part of the 30,000 barrels.

Do happen to know if Lift Bridge makes their root beer/cream soda in-house or at Third Street? Just curious.

They make their soda's at both places depending on availability and timing. I bet once their new brewery opens they will be adding more soda's to their current lineup.
