Brewpublic's article about a new Bend brewery got me to make a new thread, but I realized there's a fair amount of activity in addition that hasn't yet been discussed. Boss Rambler was a total surprise to me, but they'll apparently have a taproom between Sunriver and 10 Barrel on Galveston in time for Bend Brewfest next week. Spider City Brewing will be opening more towards the south end of town.

Redmond has picked up two new breweries with another two on the horizon. Porter Brewing is 100% cask ales (!), and Geist recently had an event at Platypus. Braveheart may already be brewing too, but I couldn't find much about them. Initiative Brewing's website says early 2019.

Now that boneyard has an actual “pub,” I would vote them up to the recommended “must hits.”

PS...thanks for keeping up this thread!

D’oh! @John_M would you please make this change and remove the “small tasting room” bit?

I keep seeing cans of Monkless around here, but just haven't pulled the trigger on any of them for some reason.

What are you guys into from them?

I could drink their Restitution Ale all day long. So far only seen it on tap locally in Bend, at one of my watering holes...and at the Monkless tasting room itself.
I was delighted to see their Capitulation in cans at one of my local grocers. It's delicious. From what I understand, the Peppercorn Wit is sort of an amped up Sheppelkoffegan (if I remember correctly)..more everything, but essentially the same flavor profile. It's a little too exotic for my tastes but one of my co-workers really likes both of those. (PS: Monkless cans are usually cheaper at Food4Less, although currently at Albertson's it's on sale. Pfriem is almost always cheapest at Trader Joe's than anywhere else...although I have not checked the Used Food Store (Grocery Outlet) lately.

Actual LOL at "the Used Food Store". I call it "The Island of Misfit Groceries."

Grocery Outlet is useless nowadays..back in the real weird day..they had some foreign and beers from back east..now its mostly local big selling beers..and for just about the same price you can find at regular stores.

That sounds a lot like Trader Joe's used to be, 20-odd years ago. Regular shipments of unexpected imports or out-of-region beers would show up, priced to move. You'd never see them again, but there would always be something new and interesting.

I remember stocking up on six-packs of Usher's 1824 Particular Ale, a luscious winter warmer from Wiltshire. But the best find was the $10 magnums of Hair of the Dog Fred.

Eh, in all honesty, they've cleaned their game up in last 5-8 years. The store is cleaner, fewer damaged packages, a decent selection of meat and cheese (depending on the day), and a decent beer selection, if your looking for basic "drinking" beers. Often, I find real nice beers that hold up (hi there Old Rasputin & Pranqster!) for great prices.

Also, quart bottles of juice smoothies for $3? Yup, that's my healthy jam. Still don't understand why my GO, in a college town, doesn't carry cheap ramen.

As the years go by and I look back on that experience, I've just become more and more puzzled by it. I don't think HOTD's production was any greater back then (late 90's) then it is now, yet even the Sacramento TJ's got a fair amount of those magnums (where I was living at the time). Unfortunately, everyone and their brother recognized what an incredible deal this was, and bottles were gone in a day or two (I went back for a second bottle after a pleasant Saturday of drinking Fred all day and passing out on the couch and they were long gone). I asked the beverage manager what the deal was, and how it was that they'd gotten in all those cheap magnum bottles, and he said he really wasn't sure, but thought there was some problem with the label (that forced HOTD to unload them at a fire sale). Of course if that was really the case, then I don't think TJ's would have been able to sell them either.

Funny thing... I almost missed out on this deal, because I wasn't sure I could drink an entire magnum of Fred. The local TJ's had cases and cases of it, and I thought maybe I'd think about it for a while, and would come back later if I really felt I wanted some. Fortunately, there was a long line at the check out, and I decided while waiting "screw it", I'll just grab a bottle now (as it really was just too good a deal to pass up). As it turned out, I had no trouble at all downing the entire magnum over a 5 or 6 hour period. Still a great memory.
