FWIW I have that same issue in my area (Southeastern PA).

    Cheers!

I like everything from malty old-school IPAs to thick and juicy NEIPAs and milkshakes. However, my preference is actually somewhat in between. My favorite sort of IPAs combine both tropical fruit and soft creamy malt with cleanness and bitterness. The best example I've had lately is Otter Creek Head Charge. So fruity and creamy upfront, but then clean and dry on the finish.

I'm looking forward to trying Torpedo again, though. I haven't had it in 2-3 years and wonder what I'll think of it now.

I think there's nothing at all juicy, soft and creamy about Torpedo and I love it for that piney matly quality. Hard to find well done these days.

I know it, and don't get me wrong. I love old-school West Coast IPAs, too. I love the simple combo of citrus and pine, and my favorite thing about IPAs in general is the sticky resinous aftertaste, which so many IPAs lack these days. The kids today with their ultra fruity and soft IPAs don't know what it was like to feel like you were chewing on pine sap.

I would gladly trade with you all the Torpedo for the Vienna Lager. The VL is heavenly and I would buy it often if it were year round.

I don't know about that - I love the Vienna lager (from last year, didn't see it here yet) too
but I have a ton of Sidecar IPAs around from the Summer Packs I bought. I don't want to dump them but not exactly looking forward to drinking them. My wife (who basically only likes white/wheat ales) sometimes can drink them but she says they get too bitter.

SN doesn't make bad beer but I think they make curious and reactive market decisions.

I wasn't blown away by the Vienna Lager when I first tried it, but then again, I only had it once at friend's house, and it his glasses weren't very clean... :unamused:
So I'm looking forward to trying all of the beers again, almost like a fresh start.

What are the packaged dates people are seeing on the mix packs?

Not only is it good, but how many Vienna Lagers are there out there? (And if someone says Boston Lager I'm going to punch them)

Around mid-July if I recall correctly.

    Ha, damnit.

Kind of curious how a VIENNA lager doesn't use Vienna malts huh? (although to be fair, I don't think Sam Adams calls it a Vienna either)

Nah, its the Boston Lager - I think its just classified here as a Vienna.

Now get this, Negra modelo is classified as a Vienna lager here - I think for similar reasons as why Boston lager is classified that same way. I was going to use that as a comparison, but when I looked it up online ... Well according to their website (https://www.modelousa.com/en-US/product/negra) they self classify it as a Munich dunkel!?-

Three Vienna Lagers that I enjoy drinking are:

    · Devil’s Backbone Vienna Lager

    · Double Nickle Vienna Lager

    · Neshaminy Creek Churchville Lager

All three of these beers are readily available on my local beer retailers’ shelves. Needless to say they may not be readily available to you.

FWIW Sam Adams Boston Lager is an American Amber Lager beer IMO.

    Cheers!

FWIW Negra Modelo is an AAAL (American Amber Adjunct Lager) in my opinion.

    Cheers!

And the BJCP recognizes all of this. See below (Jack, they even mention the Devil's Backbone as a commercial example...unfortunately we don't have any of these in my area :slight_frown:):

Characteristic Ingredients: Vienna malt provides a lightly toasty and complex, Maillard-rich malt profile. As with Märzens, only the finest quality malt should be used, along with Continental hops (preferably Saazer types or Styrians). Can use some caramel malts and/or darker malts to add color and sweetness, but caramel malts shouldn’t add significant aroma and flavor and dark malts shouldn’t provide any roasted character.

Comments:...Many Mexican amber and dark lagers used to be more authentic, but unfortunately are now more like sweet, adjunct-laden Amber/Dark International Lagers. Regrettably, many modern examples use adjuncts which lessen the rich malt complexity characteristic of the best examples of this style. This style is on the watch list to move to the Historical category in future guidelines; that would allow the classic style to be described while moving the sweeter modern versions to the International Amber or Dark Lager styles.

Commercial Examples: Cuauhtémoc Noche Buena, Chuckanut Vienna Lager, Devils Backbone Vienna Lager, Figueroa Mountain Danish-style Red Lager, Heavy Seas Cutlass Amber Lager, Schell’s Firebrick

Perhaps a visit to the Philly area is in order? Lots of different types of Lagers readily available on retailers' shelves.

And coming soon: a ‘special’ beer at Brauhaus Schmitz from Traunstein:

"The Traunstein Brauhaus Schmitz Oktoberfest beer is only available at Brauhaus Schmitz and it is specially brewed for them by Hofbräuhaus Traunstein, a brewery in Traunstein, southeastern Bavaria, Germany.”

I have had this beer over a number of years and for my palate it is excellent.

It is the pale colored beer in this photograph:

    Cheers!

P.S. I ordered the Pale Oktoberfest, the other beer is a Dunkel that my wife ordered - Traunstein Dunkel I think.

I know! I've never been except the airport (no offense, that airport sucks).

We do get the Traunstein Oktoberfest (it's also pale), but it sounds like the one in Philly is different.

Besides the list @JackHorzempa posted, as I am fortunate enough to be able to drink them regularly, I will also add Brooklyn Lager and Great Lakes Elliott Ness if you count it. Vienna Lagers are definitely one of my favorites and I wish there were a few more.
