“Each year the Denver Rare Beer Tasting is one of the most talked about events during the Great American Beer Festival weekend,” said Lyke. “The beer list coming together is one that is impossible to duplicate. The combination of unique beers, talented brewers and devoted beer fans in the room creates a special atmosphere at the event.”

Pints for Prostates is a 501(c)3 non-profit charity and all net proceeds from Denver Rare Beer Tasting go towards the group’s awareness mission and help to fund the education and support programs of the Us TOO International Prostate Cancer Education and Support Network, and free prostates cancer screening programs provided by the Prostate Conditions Education Council.

    About Pints for Prostates

Pints for Prostates reaches men through the universal language of beer to encourage them to take charge of their health. The group was founded by prostate cancer survivor and beer writer Rick Lyke in 2008. The grassroots effort raises awareness among men about the importance of regular men’s health screenings by making appearances at beer festivals, social networking and pro bono advertising. According to the National Cancer Institute, approximately 165,000 new prostate cancer cases will be diagnosed in 2018 in the U.S. More information is available at www.pintsforprostates.org. Pints for Prostates also has a presence on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram (@pints4prostates).

Not saying I disagree, but it is definitely an excellent time to be a craft beer fan that we can say that bringing Dark Lord to a rare beer fest is somehow "mailing it in".

Last year they brought a mediocre, readily available IPA to a rare beer event. I don't think their reputation for mailing it in stems from only this year

I did think they mailed it in last year too, but having said that nothing of theirs is readily available where I come from and I actually thought that IPA was pretty tasty.

Yeah, Iagree. They seem to mail it in at the Firestone Walker Invitational as well. A few years ago they brought a bunch of variants, which was amazing. Because one would run out and you'd be sad, but they'd just tap the next one. So you were getting SOMETHING unique.

But aside from that one year, they bring what seems to usually be one keg of Dark Lord that runs out in the first 10-15 minutes of the festival, and then Zombie Dust. This year they brought ChemTrail DL, and by the time I got to the front of the line (12 minutes into the festival) it was completely gone. Only option remaining was Zombie Dust.

I might just be jealous that I don't get to drink their incredible beer more often, though. Still, I'm usually disappointed when I visit them at festivals they attend.

We are bringing back Bullpen Brewers this year after last year's successful test. We'll have seven Bullpen Breweries on each floor this year, ready to fill slots as beer runs out from other breweries. This enables us to invite more breweries to the Denver Rare Beer Tasting and present additional interesting beers as the afternoon moves on.

Last year we had 58 brewery slots and 10 Bullpen Breweries. The first was moved into place at 1 p.m. and the last Bullpen Brewery started pouring at 2:30 p.m., which means 48 of the original brewers were still active 2.5 hours after VIP doors opened and 90 minutes after general Admission guests entered the tasting. This year we have 60 brewery slots and 14 Bullpen Breweries. Here are those breweries and where you will find them during the event.

    Second Floor
    August Schell Brewing
    Grand Teton Brewing
    Libertine Brewing
    Odell Brewing
    SanTan Brewing
    Saranac Brewery/F.X. Matt Brewing
    Sun King Brewing

    Third Floor
    Cerebral Brewing
    Fremont Brewing
    Modern Times Beer
    New Realm Brewing
    3 Floyds Brewing
    Trophy Brewing
    Woods Boss Brewing

Is there an announcement made when the bullpen breweries are going live? That 3rd floor bulloen has a few I need to make sure I don't miss.

Unfortunately, the change overs happen on the fly and the sound system at McNichols cannot be heard above the crowd noise. It is impossible to announce each beer and we'd likely not want to do it if we could because of crowd flow. There is enough great beer being poured and a good craft beer friendly atmosphere that we don't want alter that vibe. After all, this is our attempt to bring extra breweries to the event and benefit our guests with additional beers. It's not meant as hype, but as adding value to an already great afternoon.

We cannot predict when each brewery will go live, but we expect the 14 Bullpens Brewers will go into place during a 80-90 minute window starting hopefully a bit after 1 p.m. So that's roughly 1 new brewery every 10 minutes on each floor. Last year the final Bullpen Brewer was tapped at 2:30 p.m. It worked well, even with the mystery around exactly where and when each brewer would start pouring.
