Not really. I thought it was implied, but I'll just spell it out that I was inferring ideal or exemplary examples, not crappy ones ; and was using Helles as shorthand for the Munich version. As such, each of the big 6 versions has a profound malt presence, which easily sets them apart from the other styles.

I was thinking of something like Paulaner, Spaten, HB, or what I remember of Augustiner when I went to Munich on my anniversary.

I'd say from drinking them in Munich it takes a fairly in depth understanding too really differentiate between the Augustiner Helles and Export.

I spent an entire summer in Dortmund. I drank case after case of Kronen Export and a bit less of DAB. The differences between these and the Munich Helles is really not all that great. As I said the difference primarily is ABV with a subtle mineraly taste and bitterness.

Not really something that is on the basic level for understanding beers.

Heavy metal isn't music. It takes all that is good about music, changes it to over the top sounds, and produces an overload that appeals to the young crowd who are unsophisticated jerks. The only reason these noobs are drawn to heavy metal music is because of peer pressure and posts on Instagram. It is part and parcel of a music scene that is being overrun and taken over by heavy metal music, and it is hard to find any music anymore at the music store, or performing at concerts, that isn't heavy metal music. These low lifes aren't even real music lovers, anyway.

NEIPA isn't beer. It takes all that is good about beer, changes it to over the top flavors, and produces an overload that appeals to the young crowd who are unsophisticated jerks. The only reason these noobs are drawn to NEIPA is because of peer pressure and posts on Instagram. It is part and parcel of a beer scene that is being overrun and taken over by NEIPA, and it is hard to find any beer anymore at the beer store, or at taverns and pubs, that isn't NEIPA. These low lifes aren't even real beer lovers, anyway.

Music snobs vs. beer snobs. Hard to pick a favorite.

I've had a ton of Augustiner and DAB over the years, so I'm not sure why we're seeing things so differently. Maybe you're misconstruing Augustiner's export version for a Dortmunder? In that case it's just an export strength Munich Helles, so would naturally be extremely close to the Hell.

But when I compare something like Augustiner to DAB itself, both the depth of malt character and overall balance make it easy to tell them apart.

Exactly how big is the barn you're pulling all these strawmen from, Dave? Because you seem to have an endless supply.

I've never seen DAB or Augustiner in the USA. I know they exist but not in Texas.

I am making my judgement based primarily on Kronen Export fresh in Dortmund. Which I drank by the case during my internship there. I only had DAB a few times there because I didn't think it was as good and really wasn't as easy to find. I never really saw anyone drinking it. If I remember correctly people there said that DAB had gone through a merger sometime previously and went downhill.

My experiences drinking the Munich beers are a mix of here and a few weekends I've spent in Munich.

I still say the main difference between the styles is the ABV, but the main perceptible difference is due to the water profile. The Munich beers are a little softer while the Dortmunder is a little sharper. But they both are similarly malt focused.

Edit: Maybe our difference of opinion comes from me drinking Dortmunder's fresh from the source. As well as ones other than DAB.
But I have no idea why anyone would go visit Dortmund other than myself. It's absolutely not a tourist destination although I found lots of really cool things that I'd love to visit again.

How do you know I forgot?

And to all the snobs of the world, including beer snobs towards the top of the list, so sorry to be that guy that says what the rest think, not sure how controversial it is to say this, but you truly are laughable assholes who I take great pleasure in pointing out. Your entitled manners matched with your self absorption make of you persons with no redeeming values. Your many obnoxious and vile attributes.are ones the world would be better off without having to endure.

I generally don't think an IPA/DIPA becomes undrinkable swill the minute it goes past 3 months old. The pack of fear movie lions in my fridge taste is just as good at 3 months as the month old can I first had.

As a 16 year old in 1967 I could tell how far superior Lowenbrau from Munich was compared to our then industrial choice of Schlitz. My Dad kept a case (or so) of Lowenbrau around for after golf and basketball, and the wonderful bonding that I now so fondly recall. He never cared that I loved drinking his beers. Drinking those finely malted bready and delicately hopped Munich brews helped launch me on a very long career in the beer industry. As I've said before, I can still taste them perfectly well!

I'm inclined to agree, granted the only beer I've had from that category was a brown ale from SNs Alpha Hop Society. It was delicious, but the $200 membership fee puts me off, since there's no guarantee they'd all be so good.

I already pay to buy beer I don't need to pay for the privilege of buying beer.
