Fun Beer Mispronunciations or Misinterpretations

    Now then, last night I was at a well established craft beer bar in Cleveland and I ordered a White Rajah. My server must not have heard me very well, because a couple minutes later he brings me a milky looking cocktail, which I considered with a puzzled look on my face for a moment before realizing that he had misinterpreted my beer order as a White Russian. Moments later, my friend, who is not into beer, asked "So what kind of beer is a White Rabbit anyway?"




    It was at that moment that I decided I needed to find out what other fun beer misinterpretations other BAs had encountered. With so many different beer names out there, I figured there had to be some good ones! So whatcha got?

    One time I ordered a Jabby Brau and got a Jack D'or. Not funny at all but it is my only story relevant to the thread, so you might as well laugh at it.

    I ordered a pizza with peppers and onions, I was served a pizza with peppers and anchovies. While waiting for the kitchen to correct the order, I was forced to enjoy another SNPA. Tragic.

    Last night I was at a pub and I ordered a Victory Braumesiter Pils then headed for the bathroom. When I returned the bartender handed me a gluten-free hammock.

    I was recently told that Pliny is pronounced plin knee not ply knee. That sounds stupid

    I say Cuvee De Tom because it feels weird to say Cuvee De Tommy. *Puts on sunglasses* Deal with it.
    I thought Oui Oui was a weird way to spell Oi! like in a punk song, Oi to the world.
    In fact I think I have trouble with all of the French named Bruery beers, Melange, Trois Poules...

    Ya hear that a lot and going with the Greek mythology pronunciation it would be right. I just don't get why they'd sell "Tiny Pliny" onesies if it didn't rhyme :/

    What is this "Greek mythology pronunciation" you speak of. Both Pliny the Elder and pliny the Younger were Roman and were not figments of an ancient people's imaginations :slight_smile:

    I ordered a Jai Alai and they brought me a High Life. The bartender and I both had a good laugh about that one.. He brought me a Jai Alai after he regained his composure...

    Given that neither of those pronunciations are how his name was actually said during his time, I wouldn't care too much about it.

    Fair enough, I guess mythology wasn't the right word. What I meant was that Plinius would have been pronounced with a short I and not a long one :slight_smile:

    Okay, Belgian Dubbels.

    Is it pronounced "double" or "dooble" (a la Duvel)? I have heard it both ways. The second way sound forced and silly coming from an English speaker in my opinion. If "double" is wrong I don't wanna be right.

    As far as Pliny goes. The beer is Pliny and the philosopher is Plinny.

    Not that it matters (it doesn't) and not that wiki is the end all be all (it's definitely not), but wiki has the philosopher as Pliny as well

    There are people who pronounce the "l" in Pils.Not talking about the proper stuff but the macro versions.

    A server at a place here that has a respectable beer line up offered us "Stella Ar-Toyz" on valentines day a couple years ago. I giggled.

    Last night I gave a dude a Guiness when he asked for Jameson. I don't know how I got to Guiness from Jameson...

    Great thread idea, OP!

    Not a mispronunciation story, but the other day I was out to dinner, and I asked the server what beer was on tap, and all she could say was New Belgium. I tried to explain that they make a bunch of kinds of beer, but she just shrugged and repeated "New Belgium."

    I was at Two Brothers and ordered Molten and was brought Cane & Ebel by mistake. I took one sniff of the beer and thought "this is not a sour." I then tasted it and took it back to the bartender who also tasted it and then got me the correct beer.
