Was in Columbus this weekend for a wedding and was able to stop at 450 North for a couple hours on Saturday afternoon. Juicebuster was the only NE-style IPA on at the time, was good and worth having, but nothing to write home about. Highlight for me was Flapjack Nuggets; was an absolute maple bomb. Would've been thrilled to bring back a couple 4-pks if still available. Overall, worth going to if you're in the area and the pizza looked really good too.

I get there about once per year (originally from Hammond) and always find the beer good but the brewery experience (a lot of uneducated staff, not updating tap list/running out of beers, and dour atmosphere) a bit underwhelming. But when I go to the liquor stores and grab some packs to take home the beer is phenomenal and makes me fall in love all over again. I’d say high second tier but if you’re gonna go to 3 Floyd’s might as well make the trip worth it and go to a second brewery. I love the Northwest Indiana Region and all the beer options but, honestly, I don’t think any other brewery is deserving to be on this list other than 18th and 3F. Some breweries make decent beer, maybe even one great beer or two, but overall the rest of the breweries in NWI are average to good. If you’re in the area, sure, try some of the other breweries recommended. But to make a special trip to NWI, I’d stick with 3F and 18th (at least if you are a first timer; second or third trip, try something other than 18th).

Any BA's planning on being at 450 North's release this Friday? Thinking about going, not because I like standing in line, but was hoping to share some beers and laughs.

I had Flapjack Nuggets a couple months ago while visiting their taproom and also really enjoyed it. In fact, I thought it was better than many much more-hyped maple beers (looking at you Funky Buddha Maple Bacon Coffee Porter).

Good to see a post from you in the Indiana thread again. Always enjoyed your updates on what to look for at Deviate. Hope you're liking Tennessee.

Nashville's nice, and Bearded Iris makes ridiculously good beer, but...I miss Deviate a lot! Was the saddest part about leaving Indy for both my wife and me.

Curmudgeon's Better Half out in Indy yet? Missed this the first time around and want to make sure I don't miss it this time.

Just checked Kahn's for you. Twitter shows they posted about it around 1 hour ago.

So, I'm just fact checking here. You live in Missouri? You get to 18th 1x per year? And you don't think any other NWI breweries are worthy, based on what, you're extensive sampling of local brews?

    Got it.

I know you're just poking fun, and I accept that, but it's hard to take anything you say serious when everything you say is snarky and dripping with sarcasm.

Do I know you? You say that as if you are aware of my real life persona, which indeed is sarcastic and snarky. But in a fun and engaging way - I'm really a nice guy.

That said, I'm at a loss as to why that came off as sarcastic and/or snarky. I fail to see the logic behind someone who doesn't live here, and doesn't regularly drink locally (unless I'm mistaken), having a foundation for an opinion as to what local breweries/beers are good or not. If I'm missing something, I'm open to education.

However, if you say "opportunity cost" in any post, I'm out.

Honestly, I could give two shits about some poster’s authoratative list on NWI’s beer sceen. But the fact that he is from Missouri reminds me of the old Pace Picante Commercials. New York City? Get the rope!

    Good catch @YoungLad

You are mistaken, or perhaps I wasn’t clear. I get to 18th about 1 time a year but I also go to other places in NWI as I’m originally from the area and have family there. I am not trying to bash the NWI beer scene. It’s awesome, I love it, and I’m proud to say I’m from there. I was simply trying to help a guy in his creation of a list to help visitors. I gave him an opinion. There’s a lot of great beer options in the Chicagoland area. Trying to cull it a bit can be hurtful to those getting culled but that’s the nature of lists. If I offended, I apologize. If you think my opinion is crap, well, I can’t apologize for that but just say enjoy your beer.

    Here here.

Honestly, even if you were "an outsider," I wouldn't still welcome your input. An outside is who the list is for. Who better to help comment than an outsider (not that you are one)?

OH, and @YoungLad seems to be one of the only people still on the 18th street hype train. Most of the rest of us seem to believe they (1) are over charging, (2) not as good as competitors or at least have not improved, (3) are not innovation, and (4) seem to like putting out 50 IPAs way too much.

Just wanted to drop in and give a recommendation to experience "line culture" if you haven't already. 450 N was a great experience. I met many new people, and as an outsider, I felt like one of the group once I arrived. I got to sample pours from Tree House, Speciation, Bearded Iris, Narrow Gauge, The Bruery, and more. Had a great time. It's one of those things that every BA should experience once, no matter what your preconceived opinion might be.

I'm not hyping 18th, I'm just a counterbalance to the 18th St haters in the room. (You know who you are...) It's almost like people resent 18th St for whatever reason.

A friend of mine just messaged me that he picked up 4 packs of Deal with the Devil at the Binny's in Bolingbrook for $12. That's outrageous! (snark and sarcasm intended).

It is a shame most of these people were original LOE Kickstarter members too...

I know Oktoberfest beers are not often discussed on BA, being that Sam Adams makes the most recognizable domestic version. New Oberpfalz makes a really solid one. I would highly recommend grabbing a six pack.

Russian Imperial Stout is excellent. The Doppelbock is my favorite. The Helles Lager (gold medal award winner) is tasty so I'm told. I like the Maibock and Pilsner too.
