Lately funds are short and trading has become less fun. There are too many beers out there with huge hype that is near impossible for me to land. Every listing on the ISO/FT is some hard to get beer (BAIGCCS, Handjee, MD, Assassin, etc, etc). So I'm starting this thread to seek out beers that may be just as good but with no hype.

For example, I recently had A Deal With The Devil Double Oaked. I was lucky to try this and it was hands off the best barley wine I have ever tasted. But I know I will never land this again. What might be almost as good but easy to land?

Maybe there is already a thread, if so, please point this out to me.

I feel like I never see anyone looking for Mother of All Storms. I have a buddy in Honolulu who grabs it for me. It sits on shelves there. Try that one out.

Oh my gosh I remember trying this once years ago when I lived in Utah. I totally forgot about that beer!!! Thanks!

Absolutely. I have a 2014 I've been looking to crack if you're anywhere near Lake Geneva.

I would recommend the locals for locals section. I got some great beers that way and there's lots of people willing to share the love. If you're in wisco you have access to some solid stuff that people like that doesn't get wide distro so you should be able to have lots of local for local fun.

I don’t know why but I completely overlooked this thread. This is gold. Thanks!

Kentuckley, Canuckley by Transient Artisan Ales.

Also, Fundamental Observation has now reached non-hype status despite it being the same beer.

Add Dark Lord De Muerte to the list. The spice pops in all the right ways and it trades super low for a DL variant.

Traxxx by Witch's Hat is another local Michigan gem. Straight Reese's peanut butter cup.

I had Bring the Ruckley awhile back and it was pretty awesome. I'd trade for the set in a heartbeat.

Evil Twin (+ Westbrook) makes amazing little-hyped maple bourbon and double (marsala + maple bourbon) barrel aged stouts, but their shelf-price is usually pretty damn high, so you have to have something a little hyped to get someone to trade you one if your area doesn't get much of these.

DO has a lot of hype now. I've looked for it but now its getting pretty difficult to land. I had b2 a few years ago and it was in my top 3.

From the San Diego region the last beer that wowed me was mikkeler whiskey BA X and it can still be bought online.

Dude I had the brandy barrel aged version of that one and it was amazing. A friend picked it up at the SF location, which apparently only got a case of each or maybe even only a split case of the two? I would definitely love to try the whiskey version though. I love boozy non-adjunct stouts like that. I presume the base is some kind of oatmeal stout.

Going to add some comments here regarding the OPs initial question:

There are lots of great beers that are not hyped. The problem in obtaining some of these, however, can become:
(1). Finding someone to trade these beers, even if they are readily available, or
(2). Finding someone to trade these beers at a reasonable rate.

Regarding (1): A beer like Taxman Evasion is quite delicious. It's not hyped, and you should be able to trade for it at a $4$ rate for a similarly "rare" local beer. This could be something like $4$ (or ounce-4-ounce) with Strawberry rhubarb from NG, or a Darkness/BA Darkness, or Liftbridge Silhouette, etc. The larger problem may just be finding someone to trade it to you. I think a lot of true locals that don't visit this site buy the bulk of it. Once you look at only the subset that visits BA, you're looking at a smaller subset of traders. Your best bet for some of these beers (if you don't get any help in a posted ISO) is to go to the appropriate forum, find the brewery thread, and indicate that you're looking, posted, but no one's responded, and that if anyone has a lead you'd appreciate it.

Regarding (2): Not all regions are built equally. Places like Chicago that have lots of great breweries are often willing to trade local tasties - even uncommon like the example above - for others without sticking it to anyone. They have lots to choose from - they care not for being greedy. However, other states that may have next to nothing of national attention seem to have a penchant for holding beers for a higher ransom - even when they can be found on a store shelf, and should be $4$, even without something "rare" in return. It's on the shelf for pete's sake. I've personally experienced this, seen it first hand, and have friends that have all had this same experience with Jackie Os. Not talking about Brewery Only releases, or even limited releases - but beers that will sit for weeks or months. Somehow because they are BA means to some that they shouldn't be $4$, and I don't get it.

Hope some of this was helpful.

This has made it difficult for me to find those Evil Twin/Westbrook maple bourbon BA collab beers. KC usually gets less than a case of each total from Shelton for the entire metro area, while NYC has them sitting on shelves according to Beer Menus and people in Charleston can often get them at Westbrook AFAIK. The problem is they're $40+ with lots available in those areas so nobody has them unless I offer something that will motivate them to go get it off the shelf.

I'm one of those that would have to be motivated. I had the churros one at $42 I was informed this was at the low end not to mention the recent red wine BA one. It was good but wouldn't spend that much. Evil twin beers are just way too expensive to begin with. I've been in a situation where I was going to execute on a trade and the other guy requested a beer almost as an extra. I get said beer and then he claims he broke the bottle... sorry to get off topic but yeah in a nutshell it's really hard to incentivise someone at that price mark...

I get it now. I was confused why someone would have to be incentivized to spend money on a beer you're trading. I had not considered the idea of being stuck with the bottle. That makes sense.

Suarez Family Brewery in upstate New York is relatively unheralded right now, but I recently got some bottles as expansion beers in a trade with a repeat trader, and oh man, their saisons are just as good as that farmhouse brewery in Vermont. They have great rated beers but they don't command massive hype, and is relatively close in location to NYC.

Also, Casey is one of the known quantities based on their past performance that is pretty much trading at $4$ nowadays.

Of course, these recommendations are for saisons which is generally an underlooked category on the trading forums in the first place.

Dude, Casey is the shit. I found a bottle of The Cut Laroda Plum in Colorado Springs back in May. Brought it to a Side Project release share last weekend and everyone loved it. I also brought a Blvd Love Child 6 to the same share and that was a winner as well. Lots of funkiness almost like the 3F OG.

From everything I have seen, it is hard to find someone to trade with to get Suarez =/.

At $4$, their beers are expensive comparatively to HF, right? I was thinking when I looked it up...like twice the price for a 750?

I think more than anything, HF is (especially their shelf saisons) incredibly cheap.

Ale Apothecary makes some excellent beer with very little hype. I have enjoyed everything I have had from them.
