Maybe this isn't controversial, but I feel like most beer ratings aren't a good judge of what I'll like myself. In other words, I don't always trust the ratings.

I always look at the "low" sorting first. Really puts things in perspective, IMO.

Yes, that and who is leaving the review. If I see a BA who posts a lot and is knowledgeable, I tend to listen to them more than random reviewers.

I'm new here. How do you do that? By clicking on someone's profile to follow to reviews? Any way to do something like that by looking at the top 250 list or whatever?

I have a new controversial beer opinion. The controversial beer opinion thread is dead!

Just hang around the forums, check out new beer sunday and what beer are you drinking now. You'll get the feel for the more prominent BAs, their tastes and whether it matches up with yours. When you see one of their names on a review it may mean more to you than a random person.

I think the top rated tab above a beers review window will show the higher rated reviewers, but I'm not sure how that works.

If a beer has very few reviews, one or two high or low reviews can skew the overall score. So there's also that to take into account.

Some of our more knowledgeable posters don't review a lot and some of our best reviewers don't post a lot. Just hang around awhile and you'll pick up the vibes.

No offense but what you said at the end there doesn't really make sense, while it is true that flavors get more muted as a beer gets colder, if there is no real taste/flavor in the first place (as in Bud and Coors), then they wouldn't need to serve it cold to mask anything, because there is nothing to mask (I'll give you that these are shitty beers that do not get less shitty the warmer they get). I agree with the soul of the point, those are watered down, mostly flavorless beers, but I think the serving temp likely has more to with entrenched drinking culture, attitudes toward beer, and the situations in which beer is most traditionally enjoyed.

Maybe have a room temperature bud to refresh your memory, then report back

Just curious if you have tried to find a reviewer (not rater, number ratings are worthless for everyone) who has a palate similar to your own, and reviews a lot of beer? I have a few I use, and they have been extremely helpful. I never had/have enough money to just go "A to Z" at the beer store, so these folks have been really helpful in pointing me toward, or away from, potential purchases

I actually prefer room temperature bud. I much prefer Bud to be ice cold, though.

No, I haven't yet, but that's a good idea. I agree that with all the choices out there it's good to get guidance on what's worth trying. Just feels like it could be simpler than it is, but not sure what that answer is. The review route seems like a good one, but still need to do some work to figure out who to follow for my particular tastes.

One strategy. Go to the page of a beer you have tried and enjoyed. Sort the review by "Top Reviewers." Start reading reviews until you find a few that are describing what you thought you were tasting or help you say, "Ah, so that's what it was."

Doing this a few times will help you identify a few of the more experienced reviewers who have tastes similar to yours. It can also help with figuring out the words you need to communicate what you are experiencing, e.g., if you have a particular beer in your glass and you read several descriptions of the "lacing," the word lacing takes on more meaning.

Then if you want to do some reviewing, write a draft review (just for yourself), go to the beer page and read the reviews of reviewers you trust and that will help you both with identifying aromas/flavors and with a way of describing them.

BTW, the numbers can be useful as an initial filter for beers that might be worth seeking and then reading some reviews of those beers will help you decide if you want to spend the money to try them.

I think the notion that AALs lack flavor is a bit overblown. On a relative basis they certainly lag behind most craft beer, but judged as just a beverage I would say they have plenty. If Budweiser simply lacked taste I wouldn't dislike it so strongly nor would I notice how much I prefer Miller (and yes, I've done it blind).

I'd say it's really only when you get down to the ultra light category that the "flavorless" trope can perhaps be fairly applied.
