I'm like a half beer traditionalist (since I don't only drink lagers). Could ten years ago, when I first dipped my toes into craft beer, be considered the "good old days"?

Yeah, I roll my eyes at some trends and do gravitate towards many European styles, but what can you do?

To be fair to the beer traditionalists, let's talk about these haze bombs in a couple hundred years when they've become a venerated traditional drink in massachusettes homes, celebrated around the world. Ya you're a dick if you think any one style of beer is the only worth a damn but at least the style they've chosen is one that has proved it's staying power over the centuries

What makes their opinions towards "craft beer" any worse than your opinion towards "traditional beer"?

I like to keep an open mind, I do not drink craft beer exclusively. While I may not be very fond of yellow Lagers, I do rather enjoy (Doppel)Bocks and other traditional styles such as Hefeweizen, Gose or Lambic.

I think it's hillarious when someone raves about German Lagers and then says he wouldn't drink a Gose. As if that had ceased to be a traditional German style just because craft brewers have picked up on it a while ago. Fair enough if you just don't like sour beers, I guess. A truly traditional Leipziger Gose isn't even that sour though.

IPAs are the most popular craft beer in the US because the intermountain northwest grows the absolute best hops on earth and our innovative and industrious american spirit has inspired the biggest and most successful hop breeding program in generations. And we enjoy the fruits of our labors

Assuming they (or 'murica, for that matter) last that long.

I do think there's something to be said for nations who have found styles that work, versus just experimenting for the sake of experimenting, trying to one up the next guy, chasing trends, etc. How many actual styles have been created in the last thirty years? Slapping the name of a state in front of them doesn't mean it didn't draw inspiration from England.

    Debatable :|

It better be debatable if it's posted here. As to the styles, I've talked about it on here before, but I think the real genius in brewing lies in finding the recipes that match your particular (spring or well) water. Otherwise you are inherently just copying someone else. This is why I think that the wide variety of beer styles developed in the first place, sure people want some variety but usually just a few varieties. I think that the hundreds of distinct styles are primarily a response to the varieties of water and local ingredients.

Explain that comment in a little more detail. As it stands, I see it only as provocative and short of meaning.

No, I totally got it. I'm not sure I agree, though. I think it's probably pretty much a tie.

The CAMRA wankers have saved cask beer from oblivion and has influenced Parliament in getting tax reductions and legislation protecting pubs from closure.
It could be argued that its success was a factor in the creation of the American craft beer industry.

I know what beer I enjoy and know which ones I don't like. However I will not judge anyone who enjoys or drinks a beer I dislike.

I also feel like beer raters are the cancer of the beer world. Flame away raters.

By "beer traditionalists" I really mean "traditional beer snobs", as I think I made clear in my later post. Of course it was also kinda tongue-in-cheek. No one likes a beer snob though, be it craft or traditional.

Dude . . . calm down. I support CAMRA and all traditional beer enterprises. Simply making fun of my man's incomplete definition of "beer traditionalist".

That's pretty funny. "Well when i started drinking Pete's wicked ale..." "you have to be able to appreciate what's not in a lager" "haha! You can't even tell the difference between a rauchbier and a märzen!"

That hazebois term has got to go! It bugs the shit out of me for some reason. I definitely from upon that kind of stupidity (and possibly their everyday life) but the word just bugs me.

If people didn't experiment for the sake of experimenting, we'd all be sitting here drinking the same beer, driving the same car, wearing the same clothes and definitely not debating things like this on BA etc. Also, New England is not a state and did you really mean if America lasts that long?

It should be as irritating to you as they are. It should make you think, "More Facebook and Instagram dick pics of NEIPAs, anyone?"

It's (usually) all in good fun to take jabs at others, but we folks who spend a lot of time talking about minutia on a beer message board and posting carefully staged pictures of the beers we're drinking should probably keep the "glass houses" aphorism in mind

    Continuing the controversial opinions thread:

Why is New England taking credit for this NEIPA Style?

"The grassroots of the NE IPA style can be traced back to craft beer birthplace Omaha in 1994, where the beer was initially referred to as Omaha-Style IPA. The style’s origin has been wrongly credited to the New England region. When asked for a comment, Paul Kavulak of Nebraska Brewing responded with, “What the hell? Are you for real? Freaking amazing where brewers get inspiration these days. Sure, it’ll stand apart but come on”
