I'd agree. If someone has more than a handful of 5s in their ratings or reviews, they're doing it wrong. Same thing goes for people who start their review, "I really don't like this kind of beer, but . . . "

That's difficult, it is of course easy to spot a beer which is too old (often lacks condition, lacks flavour or even developing an unpleasant "edge"
I have even had beer which deteriorated in the glass ; a couple of decent mouthfuls and then going downhill.
I think back to the days when the neighbouring pubs were owned by the same brewery and in theory sold the same beer. But different cellaring and treatment gave each pub's offerings a unique characteristic. You could be blindfolded and taken to a pub and know which one you were in by tasting the beer. By and large the quality was good, an excellent brewery coupled with a rapid turnover of stock.
The brewery was remarkably consistent, the variation developed after leaving it.

Hmm, guess I'll just have to do more on site testing with a few more pub crawls.

Thanks for giving it a shot.

Oktoberfest beers are bland and boring.

Ah yes. Oktoberfests don't have citrusy American hops so they are bland.

There's so much more to beer than just citrusy hops.

Maybe it should have been, "anything without ridiculously obvious flavors is bland and boring"?

And Oktoberfest beers have plenty of flavor just not the citrusy hops.

Too many beers, too many styles, too many different takes on too many styles. too many brands making too many takes on too many styles, too many new beers to keep up with, too many delicious styles of beer in all my favorite flavors that I can never resist, too many breweries stepping up their games and making much too much incredibly delicious beer, too much regret that I only have so much liver and money to go around, too much confirmation that things are getting even better than this for beer lovers, too fucking much of it all, making me too fucking happy about this shit all the time is my controversial opinion(s)

I didn't say a single word about "citrusy hops". Besides, I don't even drink those types of beers. Let's not make any assumptions here.

Your palate obviously lacks the sophistication to truly appreciate this subtle, nuanced style.

That falls under the same category as "acquired taste" or "look for the flavors that aren't there". For the record, I enjoy and appreciate a good Oktoberfest beer, I'm not overly enthusiastic about the lager guys coming out to let people know they are superior tasters.

I didn't get into craft beer to drink styles that are "subtle". I like flavor and lots of it.

I'm 99% sure he was joking. Reference to an earlier post he made about traditionalists being even more annoying than jooseboiz
