I was shocked they even tried. I could not believe it would have been allowed.

With like 20 or so different cans available these days maybe they just needed to spark a little more buzz to get the hype back in their lot. Does suck for those who were probably eagerly awaiting the can and merch they announced it a few hours before opening but I guess when they did is better than announcing it just before doors opened.

Thanks in part to so many people checking out The Answer today Veil had an old school release day. Consistent line all evening with 1 hour + waits after opening and sold through all 1,200 bottles of Toast E-Coilz in just a few hours. Great for them after how the day started.

Probably more related to the Veil releasing a bottled stout than an Answer IPA.

Not so much the IPA rather the glassware set. People freely dropping $35 on Ken/Ryu then going a few miles up the road to drop another $18 on 500ml bottles. If Triple Crossing blows through their cans on Friday we'll know The Answer crowd showed up strong. .

I couldn't believe that they sold out, I stopped by the Veil a few mins before open and got through the line in 20-ish mins max. I think everyone was at the Answer first and then went to the Veil, so the longer lines started later.

    How’s the toast-e-coilz tasting?

I didn’t think it was great but I didn’t think it was bad either. It really depends on how impressed you are by beers that taste like things because they have those things in them. Its a stout that tastes like maple syrup and a little bit of cinnamon. The fact that it was only a little too sweet seems like a huge win for the veil, but overall I didn’t really enjoy drinking it. It does have a very nice body, I thought that was the best thing about it. The thought of paying $18 for what is essentially the equivalent of 1 16 oz can seems absurd to me. Its the kind of beer that any brewery could make and a bunch do, but nobody gives a shit about those because they don’t have 4 hypenames on the label.

I may have enjoyed Toasty a little more than you, but overall similar sentiment.

With that said, I thought Unloved was fantastic on Sat and ended up getting quite a few bottles. For how AB forward the beer is, it wasn't hot at all, which really impressed me.

Join us on Tuesday, October 2, for the release of Cross Pollinate -- a collaboration with The Veil Brewing Co.!

Nineteen months in the making, Cross Pollinate commenced in March 2017. We boiled a blend of Gold Rush and Winesap juice in a kettle at The Veil for one hour, added aged Willamette hops, then left the juice open to the elements overnight in The Veil's rooftop coolship. This allowed the juice to gather wild microflora for spontaneous fermentation.

The next day, we transferred the juice to eight Napa red wine barrels, where it fermented and aged until June 2018. After packaging the cider, we allowed it to bottle-condition for three months to carbonate.

A limited number of 750ml bottles will be released to the public on Tuesday, October 2, starting at 1 p.m. Draft pours will also be available. A small collection of magnums will be available on a lottery basis.

The Happy Arepas food truck will also be on site all day, serving up lunch and dinner.

Veil has released 3 incredible lagers in the last couple of weeks. A couple weeks ago (I think, don’t sue me) it was Thorn, which at the time I thought was the best lager they’ve done and one of the best beers in cans period. Then this year’s Deathless, which I think is better than last year’s batch and as-good-as-if-not-better-than Thorn, and finally the goddamn masterpiece Dwell. Thank god nobody gives a shit about Veil lagers because I can’t get enough of these and will be sad when they’re gone (til next year hopefully).

Hotel question for 1st time visitor doing a brewery tour...

Reserved Courtyard Marriott Richmond West for this coming weekend. Good choice? Should I go more towards the downtown area? Not sure how weather will be so I assume I'll be using Uber/Lyft for everything anyways.
Any suggestions appreciated. Also feel free to throw in some suggestions/events going on this Friday/Saturday.

    Thanks All.

Staying that close to The Answer could be dangerous. Ha!
No help on hotels but I would bet the closer you get downtown it would cost a little more. Nothing wrong with Courtyard. There's a Holiday Inn West End at Willow Lawn a little closer to Scott's Addition but it would be equally as good IMO. Just personal preference of which hotel brand you like better. I personally prefer Marriott.

Forecast looks pretty good for this weekend. An alternative to Uber/Lyft could be GRTC. The Pulse route has a good number of stops nearby to a good number of breweries and an all day pass is less than $4. I think on weekends buses pass each stop every 15 - 30 mins. Closest it would come to where you're staying is WIllow Lawn so you would need to get to that stop if you decided to try it out. If you're really hip RVA has no shortage of bike / scooter shares.

I just did something similar last week, though I was at the Courtyard Richmond West for work. Still, hit the breweries fairly hard in the evening. Being that close to Answer (an easy 10 minute walk) made for a good end to the evenings.

@TomCat11 many thanks for all of your insight that you offer in these forums into the beer scene of Richmond, as well as Charlottesville. I will be in C'ville on Friday for the Pitt / UVA game and then Richmond the rest of the weekend.

Planning to hit Hardywood and Random Row in Charlottesville, then maybe a pregame bite at Citizen Burger, Draft or Beer Run. I am intrigued by Reason, but don't want to over do it.

For Saturday we have tickets for the Covenant fest at Triple Crossing. Our plan is to hit the Veil, the Answer and Final Gravity at some point in the weekend also. My wife is a huge NEIPA fan. I dig them too, but also like stouts a lot so Lickinghole Creek may have to be included as well.
