Are Shipyard and Magic Hat struggling?

Portland is a beer destination in the US, we’re not talking about Bath, Maine. We’re also talking about how Shipyard does relative to other craft breweries. I bet many of the bars that have Shipyard also have Bud Light, is Bud Light a popular beer in Portland?

I’ll concede Pumpkin Head, despite the fact it’s a bit of an outlier in their line-up. You can probably find it at some beer bars even.

I’ll phrase it this way. Do you think Shipyard is on tap in considerably less places than say 10, or even 5 years ago?

If a new bar or restaurant opens up in Portland like High Roller or The Shop, are they likely to have Shipyard on tap?

 

I think you just laid down a pretty good challenge to the homebrewers amongst us.

 

The VT IPA and our new Vermont Double IPA (and new Survival Pack IPAs) are actually the first large-scale offerings to utilize a different yeast strain other than our house yeast, which originated from the ringwood strain many years ago and has since mutated to its current character.

 

So we're back down to zero hoppy beers with a rating above 3.5 that use Ringwood.

Unless Space Juice still uses it, albeit a mutated form of it.

 

Looks like Green Blaze IPA rolls in at 3.84. Space Juice does utilize our house yeast.

 

VT IPA is my favorite hoppy beer of yours by a country mile so that's really interesting. I'll make a point to check out the Survival Pack some time soon.

 

I loved the 12 packs of VT IPA all summer, great easy going brew. I'll look out for the VT DIPA, is that one in 16oz cans?

 

Double IPAs don't come in any other format.

Sierra Nevada Hop Bullet comes in 6 & 12 packs at a very reasonable price.

Back on topic to Shipyard - I’ve always though Smashed Pumpkin was a nice boozy treat. Enjoyed one earlier tonight.

 

I wish more double IPAs came in 12 oz. cans. And by more, I mean all of them.

I get my pumpkin fix at CBC's pumpkin festival. I actually don't mind Shipyard Pumpkin Head to be honest.

Dude you’re just so wildly wrong, let go of the narrative you’ve constructed and stop cherry picking your facts to fit it.

It can both be true sales are likely declining in large part because they were over-dependent on a seasonal beer and they’re still on tap all over the place in places you don’t frequent purchased by people outside your social circle.

 

Below is a list of places that have Shipyard near me. There's that many because they're ALL Pumpkinhead. You would be "wildly wrong" to say Shipyard is a common tap handle in the Somerville/Cambridge area.

Remove Pumpkinhead from the Portland list and you knock out half of those 50 places.

My social circle does not frequent Mathews, which I went to. I've also been to Pearl's, Ri Ra, and Bill's pizza. I don't just go to the same three places when I'm up there.

All those places (with the exception of Mathews, which ironically is the most "divy" bar of those four) are completely the opposite of Novare Res...and they only have Shipyard on tap right now because of Pumpkinhead.

If we're counting Pumpkinhead, then yes, during the fall you would not be hard pressed to find Shipyard on tap in Portland. The rest of the year...I would contend you would be.

I feel like a lot of people, myself included, who frequent forums about craft beer live in a bubble. Yea we know the places to go to get trillium on tap (shout out to 5 horses somerville as well) but there are so many other bars out there that just carry cheaper stuff like magic hat and shipyard and their one craft offering is allagash white.

 

You have morphed this from - "you'd be hard pressed to find Shipyard in Portland and MH in Burlington" to "look at all the places that only have Pumpkin Head in Somerville"

Wouldn't you agree places like Portland and Somerville/Cambridge are INSIDE the craft beer bubble? They're craft beer cities.

That's why places like the Joshua Tree and Tavern on the Square in Porter have closed in recent years. And the McDonald's in Davis Square, the Dollar Store...they're not cities that are representative of cities that have a great number of those "other bars".

And "look at the all the places that only have Pumpkinhead in Portland".

If you count that beer, then yes, Shipyard is a common tap handle in Portland. And in Somerville.

I admit, I'm not as well versed on bars in Burlington.
