Lagers have been the workhorse of global beer consumption for a long time. Long before the annoying term "craft" was deployed.

The five beers I have had since they started experimenting have all been pretty darn good. If you think Budweiser can't make a good pilsner,/helles/marzen/etc. you would be wrong. They don't because the base generally likes to stay put with what they know.

Anyway, it's a controversial opinion, so I don't expect someone who hides behind or defends a word as meaningless a craft (all beer is crafted to taste as it does) to understand :grimacing:.

There's a certain cutoff with the big guys and new products - something huge, like 300 to 400,000 barrels per year- where if they don't meet it, then it's not worth their while to produce. At that scale I do wonder just how good it would be if they do come up with something that works.

    Haze is not a flavor.

I simply used craft as a substitute for another idea, whose term I did not think up at the moment I wrote my last post. Furthermore, I am very well aware of the styles of beer you mentioned, and furthermore those beers remain my primary choice to drink. My post just before brought up Trumer and Jever, as key examples (and you even quoted me in agreement!). I just do not see it in the interest of AB to brew traditional and quality all-malt lagers long-term to sell for national consumption, which would require another rebranding of their portfolio (of which they already did with "Dilly Dilly" and the Rita beers). As it stands, their attitude seems to sell between American tradition (Budweiser and Michelob), and party-going youthfulness (Bud Light and its derivatives). I don't see much space for Old World beer styles in that. It would just be easier to ask Devil's Backbone or some other lager-brewing company in their portfolio to do the work for them, as many simply do that already.

I have not seen their Pilsner/Helles/Marzen on store shelves. What I have seen, however, is their Red Lager and their Jim Bean Lager, and I have heard of the Prohibition Reserve, but missed that one.

All this is not to say that I would not appreciate a brewery that distributes in all 50 states while making traditional Old World lagers.

I don't go to these types of places, but I do wonder how Devil's Backbone Vienna is being positioned at the chain bars and restaurants lately; if there's a beer to give SABL a run for its money, that's it.

This... despite being a VA homer, I would think Vienna Lager should carpet bomb every place always serving Boston Lager (myself I'll take the 8 Point or 16 Point... or srsly consider anything else new on your draft list)

The threads I like the most usually get shut down. It is nice to talk something other than beer with you guys, even if we do get a little salty when we do it. I understand what the site is for, I'm not protesting anything. Just saying.

I agree 100%, people think and live about things other than beer while enjoying beer! For beer to be any kind of end all position is asking too much.

Controversial opinion; I don't like most beers that just taste like.... well, beer. I want more excitement and strong tastes, so I'm mostly in it for the add-junks (NOT ADJUNCTS) such as rum, bourbon, chocolate, vanilla, rum, peppers, pumpkin, fruit, coffee, nuts, and rum. I do drink beers without add-junks, I just don't usually like them as much. Bring on the pastry stouts!

I'll say again: what does a beer taste like? You can find those flavors in plain old styles, just from the combination of malt, hop, yeast types.

There must be something you enjoy in beer, or else you'd simply drink rum/bourbon/coffee/etc.

Take for example the beer I am drinking right now. It is a Fulton Port/Madeiara barrel-aged RIS. Nose is incredible - chocolate and dark fruit. The taste is bitter chocolate covered cherry and dark fruit. I rated it quite high, and would get it again. I like stouts, but I like them even better with the strong add-junk flavors such as the ones in this beer.

Even before a lot of the latest fads, stouts were one of the most diverse categories. You have milk stouts, oatmeal stouts, oyster stouts, chocolate stouts. I think its the extreme flavors associated with the style that allow for so many possibilities.

I've not had many madeira, but judging by my name, you can probably guess I'd be up for trying anything involving them.

I think a lot of people like pastry stouts, but don't like the name pastry stout or the image attached. It makes one think of oversweet beers like creme brulee or no rules, tons of unfermented sugars. I would assume CBS and KBS are technically pastry stouts with their added maple syrup and chocolate flavors, but these beers command much more respect because of the balance and thus lose the title "pastry stout" in the minds of most.

I could be off base with these assumptions, just what I've gathered from loosely paying attention in the boards.

My controversial opinion of the day is that parents who drag their kids to brewery tap rooms are some combination of having a work life that severely limits the amount of time they can spend with their children, and rebelling against the idea that they can't always do those things they used to do when they were without children. They drag their kids to tap rooms, and make up ridiculous rationales, such as "it's good for little Johnny to learn about adults drinking alcohol in adult establishments", because they want to spend time with their children but are unable to put the child's needs in front of their own

Burley Oak is entirely over rated and releases a ton of beers that miss the mark.

Just focusing on Sierra Nevada alone, I would say not seeing a beer camp 12 pack was a bigger disappointment.
