At home, I, personally, don't think it's a bad thing. At a busy pub, give it a rest. Enjoy the environs and the company.

It takes a second or two to grab a picture, not like I'm setting up lights or anything, and quite often nobody even realizes since they're buried in their own phones. I still enjoy the environs and company. Sometimes taking the picture starts a conversation about Beer Advocate.

That was the logic in NY, where the drinking age was 18, into the 1980s. Then came the MADD epidemic, and started protecting the chilluns......

It would be odd for a bar not to offer local beer, if available...that’d just be crazy dumb.

Seems “a sense of the place” would be determined by what one is looking for. In my little burg about 45 minutes north of Atlanta there’s a place (not a brewery, not a bar) where I can sample beer from 3 or 4 local breweries. The theme of this establishment is smoked mammals and poultry.....gives me a sense of the local BBQ and local beer.

I didn’t get much of a feel for Boston when touring Boston Beer, nor of Amsterdam when touring Heineken.

As Napolean Dynamite might say, "Gosh!". Around here one can be immersed in a range of local beers- on site- or find generic chain sites everywhere along these highways. In this city just walk around downtown.. I love it!

I visited Portland, ME recently & had a great time. We visited Bissell, Foundation, Battery Steele, Austin Street...a few more that have been wiped from my memory already.

By far, the most fun we had was at Novare Res, a beer bar. Much greater selection, fun vintage bottles from Jester King (!) and Fonta Flora (!!), knowledgeable waitstaff & a convivial atmosphere.

    I think you're right, @TongoRad

I think there is a big difference between the beer bars and breweries that we get in Texas and Pittsburgh.

In Texas my closest brewery has large open spaces with an interior area with lots of couches and comfortable chairs. It's a conversation room. There are lots of board games as well as other brewery Staples like Cornhole. There is also a good porch out back that I'm going to spend most of my time at this fall.
Then the next closest also has lots of space with a very nice outdoors area. It also has games for everyone.
Then places like Live Oak and Jester King in Austin have great outdoors areas to relax under the shade of the trees.

The bars in the places that I've been traveling are a lot smaller, cramped, and noisier. Everything focuses on just drinking while the breweries are trying to be more of a community center. Entertainment and all.

There is only one bar that I'd rather go it in Texas than many many breweries. But even that is technically a brewery even though I normally don't drink their house beers.

Another thing that I like about breweries is that they have their entire lineup except for seasonals out of season.

I dislike pastry stouts and BA stouts. I also find almost all IPAs boring 90% of the time. That means that I am lucky if I can find more than 1 or 2 beers that I'm interested in trying at these craft beer bars that have great curated taplists. A very popular bar in Dallas has approximately 5 beers under 7% abv out of about 70-80 beers on their menu (10 under 8%).
But I can choose which brewery I want to go to and know that I'll be able to drink their pils, or English ale, or red ale, or whatever that won't show up at any of the curated taplists because they're too boring.

The bar that I will go to anytime is in Austin and they ALWAYS have one of the most balanced taplists I have ever seen.

If I ever find myself in NYC I will likely be checking out some bars. But while I'm in Texas it's significantly less likely.

The thing is that you speak as if your experiences are universal but I'm just saying that they don't apply everywhere and definitely not in my situation.

When I Untappd a beer, I always put a picture up, or attach a pic of it later to the check in. I'm already level 100 on the picture taking badge... it's my hope one day they bump it to 999 and make it rain for mistaryte.

To be serious, I partly do it for the benefit of others on the platform... so they can see what they're ordering, if they're into that type of thing with beer.

I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.

So full of hate. The only place 2 like minded individuals should discuss the beer they are enjoying in front of them is over the internet. They should have been on their phones posting to BA rather than sitting, facing each other and actually holding a conversation.

Where do i start? Wtf did i just read through? Lol! I do agree with a couple points up there but the bottom of the list seems to have been typed in a b-wizz induced haze:crazy_face:

I'm not sure about the necessity of teaching kids about the decriminalization of beer and alcohol. I think they should know that it's an adult beverage that they too can enjoy when they are of age. I do agree that more and more places are set up as kid/family friendly and therefore it's not unreasonable to bring kids there. The problem arises from asshole people bringing asshole kids and making a conscious decision not to parent them. Bringing your kids somewhere to enjoy some family time together is different than bringing your kids somewhere to let them do whatever they want to do while you ignore them and do whatever you want to do. People like that do not care how they affect other peoples enjoyment and experience, they are only concerned with themselves, not even their kids unfortunately. I'm not even talking about the parental choices aspect of it (keeping the kids there for hours, bringing them to a non family friendly place etc) I'm talking about going to a place where it's accepted to bring kids and then just letting them wreak havoc on the place and make everyone elses time less enjoyable. Same with dogs, if your kids or your pets are negatively affecting someone else's enjoyment of the establishment without consequence, then it is a problem.

I will also say that all the bars around me now seem to have an average price per pint of around $7-7.50. This goes along with them all being obsessed with the extreme or limited release flavored beers. The breweries generally are still at or around $5 for a pint.

I just find it more enjoyable to hang out at the breweries instead of the bars. I get more variety because I don't just write off 80-90% of the taplist and I save money.

The pricing is closer around here, but I certainly see what you're saying. My local charges $7+ for pints, but their standard is a 20 oz. imperial pint. Other high ABV or limited availability beers are the same price, but in smaller serving sizes. Most of the breweries around use 16 oz. pints or sometimes 12 oz. glasses and are usually in the same price range. Like I said, maybe a little less, but not THAT much.

Sometimes the cooler, more relaxed places are breweries. I simply don't find that to be the case in my area, though others might argue that they are.

$5+$1 tip is what a pint at a brewpub should cost. $10 is what a 4 pack of beer should cost max. I'm not paying $15 for a 4 pack of beer fuck off.
