... and that "plainness" is necessarily an aspect of the branding that has an effect on your decision-making to some degree, as well. Consciously or unconsciously, marketing is affecting your decisions to buy Beer A or Beer B.

That said, marketing and branding aren't magic. They only work when they are properly applied. In other words, no matter how wonderful the marketing and branding, it isn't going to make you buy something that you wouldn't have bought otherwise. It simply makes you choose between things that you would buy.

Ehh . . . go to the suburbs of any big city and you'll see just as many breweries as there are in small cities, possibly even more. Just because they aren't set up in the city proper where the cost of doing business is higher, doesn't mean that they aren't in the general vicinity.

You can push this one step further. It doesn't even "make" you choose, it helps one choice among virtually identical products to be more interesting or attractive than another.

You've never went to a beer store and been like "what to buy what to buy?" then something caught your eye and bought it? Almost bought something called mississippi mud the other day because it was in a cool looking jug and only cost $4.

Help me out here because I'm not following the reasoning. I just don't see how the absence of something proves it's existence.

Catching my eye and grabbing my wallet are two entirely separate things.

True that. Cept for me there is just way too much beer out there and catching the eye helps.

It gets easier when you reach a point where you can walk into a well stocked store and not find anything you haven't already reviewed.

Only if you don't think about it. The moment you think about, it takes branding/marketing out of the equation.

No, because I rarely buy bottles as we have better stuff. I do buy the occasional lawnmower " beer but this is generally an old favourite. Horses for courses.

Marketing works subliminally. It isn’t intended to make you stand in the beer aisle thinking to yourself, “I like this packaging and therefore will buy this beer.” But the fact is, people do buy things in more appealing packaging. They have all kinds of statistical studies proving this. You’re not supposed to think it works but it does. Otherwise companies wouldn’t spend millions of dollars on marketing campaigns, they aren’t just stupidly throwing their money away.

But you see many companies do spend millions of dollars on marketing campaigns that simply don't work. Thus we can conclude advertising/marketing won't make you buy something/anything.

Just 3 or 4 times a week. The days when I used to sink several pints every night are a distant memory

Having professionally advised people in the marketing field and getting to know them I gained an understanding of how it it works as well as glaring incidents of how it doesn't such as New Coke or the Edsel. Marketing alone doesn't work on me, even subliminally, because I'm a rational human being capable of independent thought. To suggest it's part of my decision making simply because it exists doesn't change my own life experience in learning how to separate wheat from chaff.

I love Buds Clydesdale commercials. I will not buy Bud.

I like the Geico gecko commercials. I buy from a different insurance company.

I like the beers from a couple local breweries, and buy them. They have an advertising budget of near zero.

Marketing/advertising makes people aware of a product, it makes no one who thinks about it, actually purchase a product.

Lindemans Cuvee Renee, Boon Oude Gueze (as well as mariage parfait and black label), Girardin black label, Tilquin Oude Gueuze, and Hanssens Oude Gueuze are all better than Cantillon Classic Gueuze and Drie Fontienen Oude Gueuze.

To go further, a gueze should be considered the defining statement of a Lambic Brewery, which is only as good as its Oude Gueuze.

To go even further, there is not a single wild ale in the US made in a manner approximating a gueuze that is even close to as good as any of the aforementioned beers.

Oh yeah and of the ones I mentioned, Hanssens Oude Gueuze is the best.

On occasion, I'll emerge from a trance in some beer aisle, staring at Michelob Ultra, thinking of lithe young women or chanting dilly, dilly, thinking of my medieval roots and staring oddly at Bud Light.... Nah, I know what you mean. It's the ads that people say they hate that are often hitting the sweet spot. Advertising and marketing can be both pure science and sometimes art, combined. But this shit never affects me! No sir......Did you see the great new Geico ad making great good fun of the Chevy truck ads?
