Rookie BIF Round 2 Hints and Hauls Thread

I can't decide if this is absolutely incredible or completely nuts. Maybe a bit of both?

 

I cant even keep a cellar list of maybe 90 or 100 beers current on Excel. I'm all about easy and that's why untappd is best for me.

 

I am with you, every time I go through my beer I find stuff I forgot I had.

I think its a little nuts that I personally do Untappd and a lot of the time Beer Advocate as well.

 

Trust me -- I know I'm obsessive. When I first got into this wonderful hobby, I downloaded my untappd checkins and added some fancy crap. Then I got into beer advocate, and started logging things there too; part of it is that I was interested in how the two sites' ratings compared.

Then I got into BIF's, which meant adding wants. And looking at other people's wants, so I added an inventory tab -- which I am apparently not alone on.

But I'm not sure WHY I need to know, for example, that I have 2 bottles of Ballast Point Victory at Sea, a 22 ounce 10% ABV Imperial Porter, located in the middle box on the second shelf from bottom of my left hand shelving unit (along with 6 other beers, all either Porters or Russian Imperial Stouts, leaving 4 empty slots in the box).

Or (using the same beer as an example) that I rated it a 4.48 on untappd (compared to an average rating of 4.4) and a 4.5 on BA (vs an average of 4.18). OR that it's one of 12 Ballast Point beers I've tried, with an average untappd rating of 3.7 on both sites (vs. averages of 3.9 on untappd and 4.1 on BA).

But I sort of like numbers....

 

I think a spreadsheet of what is in your basement is a good idea. I don't have too many cellared beers yet (wine on the other hand we've got a couple cases), but it's growing and I could see how one could lose track of what's down there.

To each his own. Trying to keep track of stuff like that makes me nervous. I’m very much a fly by the seat of my pants kind of person (much to the ire of my wife) and tend to like to be surprised every now and then when I look in the beer fridge and forget that I deposited a 4 pack of ten fidy in the crisper drawer.

 

I'll send you what I do; I probably go a little overboard with locations (think of Ikea bin numbers), but it's definitely convenient when I'm sending beers out, or have company over who likes a specific style.

 

I absolutely agree -- I LIKE being organized, the fact that I'm doing it with beer is just a bonus. I don't actually do this, but I was easily able to convince folks who know me well that I keep bills in my wallet ordered by serial number.
