I would personally love to see the "Top Beers" section of this site all based on blind reviews.

I actually tend to (subconsciously) downgrade beers that are ultra hard-to-get. If you can't buy it, what bloody good is it?

telling others you've had it. i'm serious. rare beer reviews are e-peen lengtheners.

I've loved and hated on many a rare beer. Not saying rarity doesn't affect my reviews, but have fun trying to figure out how.

Yep, this is why I've got one of the biggest $&#@s of anyone I've ever met.

Hell of an accomplishment for a half-asian dude.

I suspect this is a common story. The obvious assumption is that rarity pushes scores higher, but I'd bet it also drags what would be a below average score down even lower, because your high expectations were let down.

the question is which one happens more frequently. for most people, i'd guess the former.

And how exactly do you verify this? Hmmm.... Must do an ocular patdown.

I just assume. I mean, if they haven't reviewed say, Dirty Horse or V005, well, I think it's pretty obvious who's packing heat.

Without a doubt. Just pointing out that saying "my ratings for most rare beers are way below the averages, so rarity must not affect me at all" isn't exactly a good answer either.

    I'm... honored?

More accurate would have been, I don't know, something like "AgentGiantWang", but hey, I'll take what I can get (as my wife knows all too well).

    Struggle? No.

If it was "pretty good", but it was $18 a case and available everywhere, all the time, I'll give it a decent score. But if I had to sell the firstborn that I may never even have just to get a damn bottle, I'm going to hold the brewery to a higher standard - "pretty good" isn't going to cut it there.
