Enjoyed the write-up. The caveat necessary is the author hates pastry stouts. So I wouldn’t necessarily freak out about Vanilla/Prop being ranked low. Of course, Mike Zoller didn’t like Prop either....

Either the majority of us are the zombie vanguard of an undead apocalypse, or this brohammer doesn’t understand the veritably inexorable, incorrigible voracity of our collectively exquisite palates.

Well, that's it. Today's beer consumer loves pastry stouts. If they aren't getting punched in the face with the beer's additives, the beer is just 'meh'. So the beers rated a bit lower by the author will likely be a huge hit with them.

I mostly agree but people like Noel get it wrong when they assume the “pastry boys” will love anything super sweet. He said that about Northwoods and was flat out wrong. He’s saying that about Prop 18 and we’ll see

I personally always thought craft beer would be one of the signs of the undead apocalypse. Count me as a member of the vanguard. Completely unrelated Zombie Vanguard is a great name for a dark lord day band

Read this yesterday and without even trying them yet, find the review to be weird and I don't agree with it despite not having tried any of the BCS from this year. The format of the review of separating into Tasty, Tasty with a Twist, and Not My Thing is not a great way to review these, and the first sentence does not help with the credibility of the rest of the review. He wraps it up with the last category of 'Not for Me' with Prop, Vanilla, and Bramble which are likely the three most sought after beers of this year's offering. I see he's written a lot about beer for the Tribune, but I can't help feel like knocking (even if he's not really) the last three just feels wrong.

Your criticism is confusing. You rather the author lie to the reader by writing XYZ beer(s) are great simply because everyone wants XYZ beer(s)?

The author was upfront with readers informing them of his palate and described the beers as he tasted them. I'm astounded anyone would get offended with the criticism of "not my thing — but it may be yours". Scathing stuff.

The author is a BCBS fanboy the likes of which we have never seen. How many of you purported beer fans have written a book on a beer? He has. That to me is fanatical. Given the local market in which he works and the scarcity of and difficulty in obtaining BCBS and variants it is clear to me he is just trying to drive the demand down of what should be the best variants so he has a better chance of scoring them. Rather than condemn him, we should applaud him for increasing the chances we can procure these "Not tasty beers'.....

I didn't say I'd rather him lie. I just found it to be a weird format compared to other reviews of beer and him putting Prop, Vanilla, and Bramble in the 'Not for Me' category surprising against what I would have thought.

Josh pretty famously doesn't like when flavors overpower the base beer. Hence "not for me". It doesn't say "not good" or "tastes like shit".
