My wife likes them, and actually they're really not that bad. Refreshing on a hot day I have to admit , and our pool community is littered with these.

All depends on how well they sell. A lot of wine drinkers are still wrapping their heads around the fact that caps are better than corks on bottles. I think the day the majority of wine drinkers accept canned wine is still a ways off.

If sales have already gone up by over 40% in one year I'd say the day has arrived.

Wine is always with wine and beer is always with beer. I don't see an issue here.

Yes, sales are "up" but still account for "...about 0.2 percent of total wine sales..." [Nielsen via CNBC].

Yep, and the demographic driving that increase in canned wine sales are the Millennials (same Neilsen-CNBC source) who are the single largest wine drinking demographic in the US right now.

So I'd still suggest the day when the majority of wine drinkers can wrap their heads around canned wine is either here now or on the close horizon.

I agree. The canned wine, if anything, appeals to the average wine consumer who wants to squeeze wine into occasions where it normally doesn't lend (beach, train, etc.)

That's what I was thinking. I'm not a wine guy by any means, but they seem more stuck in their ways than us beer drinkers.

I associate canned wine with Le Mad Dog 20/20, Chateau La Thunderbird, and Night Train Express L'Wino. Vintage, barely 48 hours old. Or bottom of the line acceptable domestic plonk at best.

That was the perception for craft beer also not very long ago, cans were for crap beer.

7 years ago the savant of cans and founder of the CANquest, @woodychandler , still looked to have folks send him examples of craft beer in cans from across the country. Now he has no hope of drinking all the craft beer in cans in his town. Cans became okay for craft beer lovers in an instant. I expect same for wine.

As a fan of German and Czech pilsners, (such as Rothaus),German kolsch (fruh) and other good imports, which the selection is very limited in central PA, there is a huge battle for shrinking shelf space. Imports are feeling the " crush" of cans from microbrews and now wine, so only the mega brands...not necessarily the best imports keep their shelf space.. Other parts of country may be much different. But for me, I usually have to drive to more densely populated areas such as Philly, Baltimore, NJ, NYC to get a great selection, or a chance for the beers that I like. Very difficult not to give in or up.

I'll shotgun a couple cans and tell you if your assessment is accurate or not.

For beer, no problem. Canned craft is very excellent. Wine may be a good question, and especially aging in a can. It's a nice option for casual drinking in the warmer season, and especially picnics. Potential for sure.

It's not. My GF drinks a lot of wine and she loves the canned ones.

More like Idiot Savant, but regardless. A couple/few clarifiCANtions: 1) I solicit for ANY beer in CANs much more infrequently than I used to, but I will always CANsider an offer of a CANTrade (which is SO much easier than one involving bottles); 2) I am still hopeful of drinking Lancaster City & County's craft CANs, although one-offs & crowlers make it difficult, but PA is hopeless, along with the rest of the country; 3) It was NOT in an instant!

I was roundly booed & ridiculed, causing me to dig in my heels. I was laughed out of the now-defunct Late-Night BA (LNBA) forum; I was told off by brewers, most notably, Bill Covaleski of Victory BC, much to his current chagrin; I was sent CANs of beer & boxes of schwag in the hopes that I would make like Johnny CANpleseed & spread the word far & wide; I CANpaigned endlessly at fests, having my picture taken so often that according to Amish tradition, my soul has been CANpletely wicked away.

The movement started slowly, but as more and more CANverts came to the cause, then the rest fell in line rather swiftly, as @cavedave alluded to, but it took a couple/few years initially.

Which puts it in line with the $10-15 a bottle of decent table wine. I tend to keep a couple of cans, one of white and one of red, on hand for cooking as plenty of recipes I use call for a couple of tablespoons to a quarter cup of wine, meaning with a can I can make the recipe and then have a glass or so of wine with dinner.
