OK guys, so something happened to me recently that I can't explain and really has me concerned.

I've always been a huge fan of porters and stouts ever since I started enjoying craft beer (I consider my first sip of Sam Adam's "Honey Porter" as the moment I became obsessed).

I recently drank quite a few beers over the weekend (nothing at all out of the ordinary), then noticed that on monday and tuesday night that I was choosing all of the hefeweizens, IPAs, belgians, etc out of my fridge to rate. I figured, I just might not be in the mood for the darker styles tonight, right?

Wrong. I still have no desire to drink porters or stouts. And it's not even like I don't like how they taste. When I drink them, I enjoy the flavors, but not the actual feeling of drinking them, if that makes any sense.

    It's truly heartbreaking.

Has this every happened to anyone? Will it ever go away? Thanks for your feedback

I felt this during the spring, I'm usually the type that gets into the style of the season. So as winter approaches I will actually probably start drinking more stouts and porters. For me, I didn't worry too much about it. I bet in a few months you'll be out somewhere and decide that a stout would go great with the meal your having. Then it'll start all over again where you rediscover stouts and porters you haven't had in the time you were exploring ipa's, hefs and belgians. And I hear our taste buds change every 7 years, so who knows! : )

The last few months, I have just not been enjoying RIS that have a hoppy kick to them. Still enjoy regular porters and stouts, and the sweeter double stouts. But the hoppy variety have just not been hitting the palette on the right side lately. I'm hoping it was just a seasonal thing. In fact, I'm gonna go pop open my first Narwhal and see if it goes down smoothly.

i move into and out of flings with certain styles all the time. might be on a quad kick for a while, or on one with barleywines, then it's all things hops. even my favorite styles lose their luster when overdone... the palate probably tends to get bored when bombarded with enough of the same flavors. no need to force the issue; why not take a little stout hiatus and work your way around some other styles. odds are when you return you'll remember why you love a good stout so much.

It'll probably go away. Personally, I go through phases in what is appealing to me to drink. I wouldn't worry too much. Go with the flow.

This happens to me. But with women. Bout this time of year, I usually give my ebony girl a call. By summer, I'll probably be back on my Irish chick. What I'm trying to say is, don't sweat it man. It's no big deal.

If I were you, I'd try a blend of the Ebony and Irish girls... you might find it more pleasurable.

I don't have a distaste for these styles but I did stop liking them a lot more than I used to. They are Belgian Wits and Hefeweizens. I'm not exactly sure why except maybe I eventually found them too sweet. I still like to drink them but not near as much as I used to and by that I mean once or twice a year.

Like others that have already posted, I definitely go through phases, usually based at least partly on the season. This summer I was drinking nothing but hops, but for the last month or so it's been all porters and stouts. I think sometimes your taste buds just need some variety to keep things interesting.

I got a free, aged Highland Tasgall Ale from a fellow beer geek who claimed he no longer enjoyed Scotch ales.

Keep your friends in mind when your tastes change!

A few years ago a friend bought me a keg of Schlenkerla fastenbier for a wedding present. Had a party and drank waaaaay too much and got sick. Can't even bring myself to sniff a smoked beer almost 6 years later.

The owner of a local brewpub here visited me in Bamberg way back in 1993. He was working at the time for Hales out in WA, and the brewery had given him a generous per diem beer allowance. We went to Schlenkerla and got on a roll on the company dime. To this day he can't stand even the thought of Rauchbier. I, on the other hand...

You probably got yourself worn out on them for now if youve been drinking them too much. The same happens to me with IPA's and Imperial Stouts from time to time, I wouldnt worry, give it a couple weeks and you'll be back to your old self...CHEERS

I consider my first sip of Sam Adams Winter Lager as my "omg" moment

One fateful night of drinking, eating Hot Cheeto Puffs, and playing MW2, I realized I had an Old Stock Ale just sitting in my glass I have been neglecting whilst I was playing. So, I decided to chug it. Moments later I barfed it all up. Beer, Cheetos, and all. Ever since then I can drink anything too malty i.e. old ales, barleywines, etc. Anything with a similar taste profile doesn't sit well with me anymore :grimacing::slight_frown:

This is a travesty! I feel sorry for you, hopefully you can get back into these styles soon. After all it's the perfect time of year for them, but I don't know which idea is worse, chugging old stock, or eating Hot Cheeto Puffs while drinking it.

I had nasal surgery due to a deviated septum that made me loose my sense of smell for a bit of time. During this time, IPAs were hard for me to drink. I could no longer smell or taste the great hop aromas and it just killed it for me. It coming back over time though.
