My controversial opinion of the day is that we should quit the kids/dogs in a taproom talk once we get to triple digit pages in this thread. If people can't make their point in the space of 99 pages then give up. Alright everybody, let it all out, you've got 1 page left.

I'm not getting into the argument about whether a brewery should or shouldn't allow kids. What I do have an issue with is using the justification that if the owner of the brewery thinks it is OK then it must be OK. Business owners aren't infallible and this is especially the case if the owner has has a financial interest in allowing or disallowing a certain behavior.

I certainly have a stick up my ass for not wanting to be assaulted by your little spawn. Solid argument.

Their agile little bodies would be perfect for scrubbing out tanks as well

FYI I don't have kids nor plan on having them, but they're often less difficult to deal with some full grown adults (basically kid brains in larger bodies and positions of authority)

Obviously this is a highly contentious topic with all sorts of opinions - but we're definitely in massive overthinking territory if we're going to argue that a brewery that advertises itself as kid-friendly can't be taken at it's word, but instead must have its motives second guessed.

If a brewery allows kids, then people can take their kids. People that don't like that are free to dislike it, but that's the beginning and end of what they can do about it - how does it need to be more complicated than that?

It is way to early for me for to have a debate about this but I will say you seem to be completely misconstruing my response. Maybe I should just learn my lesson and stay out of this thread.

In Texas the only difference between "brewpubs" and "breweries" now is the maximum capacity allowed and whether beer is able to be sold to go from the brewery.

Most of what is licensed as a brewpub don't sell any food while places like Karbach are licensed as a brewery but have one of the better brewery restaurants.

I assume you were trying to say that kids should only be allowed at the restaurants and shouldn't go to places that don't have them.

I know of many distribution breweries that have spacious taprooms filled with games and lots of outdoor space with stuff for children to do. These breweries don't normally have permanent food but if you bring your own or they normally have food trucks.

There are many breweries that are local that I will not take my children to. They are the small cramped places or loud ones or for a few other reasons.

But there are two big spacious ones close to my house. They have separate areas for the equipment and the consumers. One has their own root beer on tap and the owners grandkids will sometimes be seen running around playing. There's lots of games around.
The other is our friends place. A big open location with video games, board games, and more. They are trying to become a fixture in the community because they are in a small town consumed by the metroplex.

Both are kid friendly but not every place is. I don't go to every brewery. We stick to the ones that are good and want them.

We have a baby just about to start crawling. I think we should attach a scrubbing pad to its belly and send it in.

Not deliberately misconstruing I promise - genuinely would like to understand what you’re getting at.

It seems you’re calling into question a brewery’s motive in being kid-friendly. ie they are doing it purely for the bottom line and nothing else; allowing kids may still be detrimental to others enjoyment / not the “right” thing - even if the brewery says it’s fine. You use an extreme example (child labor) to illustrate the point that if businesses were the be all / end all of what was allowed, then they would do a whole host of questionable/unethical/immoral things to fatten the bottom line.

I guess my question / issue (aside from the obvious) is since the kid-friendly breweries are operating within the current (2018) legal/regulatory framework, what’s the issue, irrespective of what their true motives are? They’re not using child labor because it’s illegal. They are allowing kids because that is legal. If society as a whole feels that this needs to be corrected, then legislation should be passed making it illegal for children to be present wherever alcohol is served, without exception. But until then - carry on

    What am I missing?

I’ll take the blame here by stirring the pot again in responding to cavedave, as I had a feeling this would happen. But I agree 100% that this has been beaten to death and isn’t going anywhere at this point.

If anyone needs me, I’ll be hanging with my kids at a local brewery, apparently being silently judged by roughly 50% of the other patrons. Feel free to stop by and buy my kids a beer. They like hazy juice bombs mostly.

For the record I like kids and dogs. But pretty sure if either is at an 'adult establishment' it's because their parent/owner wanted to go there to have a beer.

I've often said that the best training I ever got for working in bars/breweries was that one summer, in high school, when I worked at a day care center.

    That is crazy!
And, as I mentioned, certain people have a literal fear of dogs. Doesn't matter how friendly the dog is. Hard to relax in that situation. (queue the reply that says some people have a fear of kids).

Now being in breweries is one thing, but if a kid gets in the way of my Galaga that is just too far!

Stouts and Porters are the same!

It really grinds my gears when I see posts like "That stout is good, but I would have preferred a Porter"

Highland Cold Mountain is one of the worst, most over hyped AND over-priced shitty beers ever! Thin, watery, spiced brown ale. And with 5.8% ABV, not sure how it's considered a Winter Warmer. But so many people in SC and NC go nuts over this every year.
