Maybe it was more like “oh god dad is drunk and ranting about the same topics....on beer internet forums....yet again. I’m never going to touch that shit”

Piggybacking...there is no such thing as an Imperial Porter. An Imperial Porter is, by literal definition, a stout.

Yeah, but did you take him to any Dead shows?

In all honesty, I believe that it's the home where hopefully the child will see their majority of adults modeling responsible behavior with alcohol. That's sure as hell the way I was raised, and to a lesser extent my own kids- and not just the home, but extended family events (and there was literally one every Sunday when I grew up ). And neither my dad, or myself, took the kids to places where adults like to go to get away from it all. But those aren't the only kind of places to have a beer nowadays, which is also a big part of the point. Actually, I'm sure you've been to Von Trapp- does that place have a 'family' vibe to it? It seems like it from the website.

I definitely would put Von Trapp in the restaurant that serves beer category rather than the adult drinking establishment category.

I don't think there is a line that can be drawn between the two, other than the line of common sense that, previous to this thread, I assumed folks to have. I do think my earlier idea that if you stand up, hold your glass of beer in the air, and shout loud as you can, "This Beer Fucking Rocks!" and everyone cheers, it is probably an adult drinking establishment. If it gets quiet and folks stare at you it is likely a restaurant that serves beer.

We do talk about this topic. Usually he calls the people who drive buzzed with kids in the car fucking morons who should be in jail, and I do agree with him.

I'll have to ask him whether it was me on internet forums discussing my hobbies that made him decide to be his own man and stand up to and reject the pressure of the drug and drinking culture at his school.

So that would be the ear drum test, then? Works for me, and I think we're pretty much on the same page there.

But it is still a Porter as that is the overall name of the style. Stout simply means strong.
A Strong Ale is still an Ale. A Stout Porter is still a Porter.

I haven’t seen anybody say they drive their kids buzzed, that’s the thing. Driving buzzed is completely wrong with or without children in the car. It is not an issue specific to a discussion around “should kids be allowed in breweries”.

Everyone is entitled to their opinions of course, but yours is an absolutist, trolling type of one that regularly relies on (I hate the term) straw men. And more recently there’s a through the roof level of sanctimony.

Congrats on being the best parent of all time. Your son is teetotal by the way. Characterizing him as sober implies there was a past issue, which I’m guessing is not the case.

People have come on here on the pro-kid side of thing, and while you may not agree with them, they have generally been even-keeled and shown common sense / good judgment. Most have been along the lines of “I bring them to the right type of places at the right time of day and only assuming they behave”. And obviously you’re within your right to disagree but you can still show some level of respect to people. But for whatever reason you have an obsessiveness around the topic, and despite actually agreeing with others (me on Suarez and now Tongo on Von Trapp) you insist on resetting things periodically and.coming back in guns blazing. Frankly it’s f’ing annoying. Especially from someone who is otherwise a valuable addition on here

I took our children to pubs when they were 7 or 8 years on.They were well behaved and when the pub owner saw them he sat them down in his kitchen and gave them fruit juice. Never an issue with them, they just sat down quietly.
Now my grandson is a different matter altogether.
One of my favorite pubs has activity days for children during the long summer break.Place is full of kids enjoying themselves yet it causes no problems.

If you stand up, hold your glass of beer in the air, and shout as loud as you can, "This Beer Fucking Rocks!" and everyone cheers, it is probably a drinking establishment that spikes its drinks with something beyond just alcohol. If it gets quiet and folks stare at you, it might just be a brewery taproom servicing the regular locals.

Here's another test: If a place has a menu with a "tasting" section that involves various food courses, "it is likely a restaurant that serves beer." On the other hand, if the menu has a "tasting" section that only tells you the size and number of "pours," it's likely a brewery taproom that might possibly serve food.

    Cheers Dave.

I'm not saying you can't bring your kids to a brewery. I'm saying that there are better things to do with your kids, something they might actually enjoy and which might even be developmentally appropriate. I am saying that nobody should pretend that they're doing their kid (or their dog) any kind of favor by dragging them along to a brewery because they can't figure out what else to do with them.

Is that such a hard thing to agree with?

Where do we stand on cats? I'm of the opinion that if cats where even a little larger than they are now, they would most certainly try to eat us. In a situation where their human handlers are likely to be inebriated, I'm concerned that cats may be emboldened, and start licking their lips.

I say: "No cats in bars/breweries/taprooms/saloons, etc.'

This is a great point, the cat will already be mad because you drug it to a taproom while you drink so it will be in a bad mood!! Do they serve beer at pet spas??

Don't kid yourself. The cats are plenty big enough and there are lots of them. All you have to do is close your eyes and lie very still long enough and cats will come along and eat you right up.

OTOH, a small child (or a dog) will go into a brewery if you take its hand (or leash) and drag it but if you try to take a cat into a brewery it will claw your fucking eyes out and run.

This is why I don't feel bad when I hear people eat cats in other parts of the world. Assholes have been hunting our ancestors (and even us!) for millions of years.

Unless brewery has a rat problem... maybe.

Once again, this side of the argument is premised entirely on straw men. Literally no one is saying that. What we are saying is that our kids enjoy hanging out with mom and dad, sometimes doing kid playground stuff, and sometimes yes, at a brewery. I don’t believe that every waking second of a kid’s life must revolve around doing the thing that is most fun for them at that exact moment. God what spoiled brats they would be. Nor would I “drag” my kids somewhere they hated just because I liked it.

When we go to a brewery, we have a good time as a family, including my kids, even if it’s not their number one choice of places to go. When we’ve hung out an hour or so, or if they get tired or bored, we bounce. This really isn’t anywhere near as difficult as some of you are making it.

Kulminator, generally considered one of the top beer bars in the world, is known for having cats hanging out in it. To some people, drinking a 5 day old local IPA while inside a hermetically sealed barren bar is beer nirvana. Others might prefer a 25 year old Courage stout in a Belgian bar in the company of some strange cats. Between the two, I’d take the latter.

I like to go to places that don't have kids or dogs. No kids or dogs, no irresponsible parents or pet owners. Problem solved.

Around here, that means you wouldn't go to Hill Farmstead, Alchemist, Tree House, Trillium, Night Shift, Idle Hands, Bissell Brothers, Foundation, Austin Street, Battery Steele... more, I'm sure. Those are all places I've been in the past month or so that have had kids and/or dogs - none of whom didn't look like they wouldn't rather be somewhere else.

I love kids and dogs. I have both, although I don't love them so much that I feel like I have to drag them along with me everywhere I go.
