As I mentioned, it did have a subliminal effect on me. My eyes saw "Island Gose" and my brain immediately thought "Goose Island"... but only for a second, until I looked again.

I doubt if the brewer actually intends to cash in on people making that mistake. But I do wonder if it was just an honest coincidence, or if they are trying to be cute.

Everyone here is way too fucking serious. I'm sorry you mistake blatant sarcasm for ignorance, it must be lonely up there on that high horse.

What's the most weird about this to me is that they are actually spelling it "GÖSE", with the Umlaut, which doesn't make any sense.

Ha. It's all good. It's the first time I've been accused of being too serious. Rather than us being on different wavelengths, I thought my exaggerated statement was a match for the one you made that I quoted.

Good catch (a "thank you" to BA members not in the US). I think Blue Öyster Cult would have a trademark case here as well if they didn't let this slip into common usage.

Not once did it make me think of Goose Island when I looked at it. The first thing that meets the eye is Ellicottville Brewing company, right away I know I'm not looking at a Goose Island product.

I don't see any way that this would lead to confusion about the product whatsoever.

Me too! It took a lot of imagination and quite a few clues to even get what this was about initially.

Well if they did it intentionally it's really quite clever and humorous. I probably would have purchased it for namesake alone.

Agreed, I had no idea what it was supposed to be copying until someone clearly stated it. Even then I don't get it. Theres no picture of a goose. There's plenty enough text to explain the beer on the packaging too. If you grab this instead of goose island, you're carelessly shopping.

Unless I'm missing something, we are arguing about (or, discussing fervently...) a trademark infringement where no such infringement action has even been started.

We really LOVE trademark discussions!

But, but... that umlaut makes it more authentically German, doesn't it? (It certainly won't affect how Americans pronounce it!) :stuck_out_tongue:

I recant my previous post about your long legged horse sir and substitute in a hearty appology.

Yup, this is a discussion to see if legal action by a multinational conglomerate is warranted based on a guy getting confused for a half second a couple of days ago. The only thing in question here is the word "Island."

Well, Bear Republic did get after a Canadian brewery over the use of the word "racer" in a beer name, so, maybe, I can see where where a badly slumping Inbev might try to protect "island".''It'd be bullshit any way ya look at it.

Walking through the local mall I saw an Orange Julius and immediately thought, those bastids - there's a lawsuit waiting to happen.

There was a court thing with Moosehead vs. Moose Wizz. (and Moose Wizz wasn't even a beer;, it was root-beer sody-pop for the kids. ) I dunno... leave it be and have fun with it . why not ? I don't make my consumer choices based on who's got the best lawyers.
