Any proper review is far better than just a number, but if you start out your review with, "I don't like ____ kind of beer, so . . . ", that's a bad look. Also, if you are interested in reviewing beer, you should probably look into what the people are looking for who read it.

I agree, there is needs to be some tangibleness to the review. Voicing that concern as evidence in a statement against novice/amateur reviewers could go a lot further in helping to change the habit. At least, that's the hope. Reducing the broad, unfocused negativity and giving areas new and amateur reviewers can focus on improving (myself included).

It also shows members who want to review, but fear criticism that reviewing is a skill that can be refined without having to have the palate or diction of a professional right out of the gate.

People are stupid. If a bar doesn't have an IPA shut up and go somewhere that does if that's what you want. Or Google the beers on tap first

I apologize if my post seemed obtuse so I'll take another whack at it.

One doesn't need a command of the language to clearly say what they like or dislike about a beer. In whatever words they choose to use I appreciate someone taking the time to write a review describing their experience with the beer and sharing their thoughts.

Their honest observations tell me a good deal more than a number followed by a non descriptive sentence or two.

To be fair, if a place doesn't have an ipa on tap these days, they're almost actively trying to go out of business. The style is pretty popular.

I actually saw the review of a IIPA that got rated super low due to the reviewer said he hates bitter beer. The Gose one I made up, but I bet there are plenty just like it or worse.

I fully agree and would add that the review section here on BA does not allow for any comments. If a member wishes to post their review on WBAYDN or NBS then it may be subject to comment but my experience on this Board has been new reviewers are almost always met with encouragement.

Beermenus is pretty much worthless anymore, in my experience. No one uses it...bars, breweries, bottle shops OR plain old beer drinkers.

It was inevitable that a site that relies on daily updates from its commercial customers would not be able to compete against a site like that other one that updates in real time from consumers about what they're drinking and where.

I won't be buying into the India pale lager fad. Fuck you you did that just to play on on names didn't you?

Yes, but we try to avoid calling it 'drunk.' I like to say 'mildly impaired' or 'off my game.' It sounds more like something that may have just happened to me rather than something I did to myself.

I have written reviews and descriptions of beer and wine for decades. Honest appraisal, proper descriptions and impressions coupled with humor was always my goal.

I've found sours/wild beers to have the most infractions of this issue. I can't count the amount of untappd low ratings I've seen with comments similar to "I don't really like sours" or "more sour than what I usually drink." Sigh.

To build upon the rating site discussion, I'll say that BA is a phenomenal resource for all things beer, and has taught me 95% of everything I know about this hobby. However, the lack of full beer lists, reviews and beer photos is really disappointing. It's also very difficult for the average person to submit a photo of the beer, and even adding notes about the beer is an additional step in the process of adding a beer to the site.

UT is a great place to see the beer in both bottles, and poured into glass. The process of adding a beer is simple, and pictures can be added easy in the app. I use them both, but I always go to UT for photos and ratings.

Sometimes I wince when I read the reviews I wrote a few years ago. I also often wince when I read the reviews I write now. I write my reviews while I'm drinking the beer and, four or five 16oz DIPA's into the evening, long after a caring family member had ought to have come and taken my keyboard away, I'm likely to still be writing reviews.

And another thing. Stop telling me that my IPA tastes like 'lychee.' I don't know what lychee tastes like.

I'm not 100% on passionfruit either.

I'm gonna get on the anti IPA train this evening. I am drinking one right now, and a quick check of my reviews will tell you that I lean heavily on the style. But it took me a literal minute to find a 6-pack of non-ipa, ipl, or pale ale at a store with a solid selection today. I didn't confirm but I would suspect that there wasn't a single 12 pack that wasn't and ipa or pale. even the 3 mixed packs i noticed were a stone IPA mixer, SN's single hop mixer, and a firestone walker 'hoppy' mixer.
I did end up finding a 6 pack of xocoveza in cans, so not all was lost but sheesh 60 actual seconds taken to just identify one non hoppy six pack. I think we might be right over the shark about now

That is a world of beer and I'd like to try them all. Nice list.
