That was a separate issue, when they first started canning, that has long-since been resolved. The inexplicable new fermentation thingy is a brand-new self-inflicted injury that you can read more about on the New England sub-forum in the thread 'Trillium Brewing Company (November/December 2018) Updated.'

Ahh interesting, I’ll have to check that out. My experience with trillium only goes back to near the beginning of this year, but I’ve had several streets, a couple of islands, and a few other versions, and whatever the issue, it is certainly a big issue in my opinion

You mean you don’t enjoy a thick layer of Mississippi River-esque silt lining the bottom of your can and spilling into your beer? Weirdo:wink:

(I pretty much “decant” every NEIPA I drink now, just because so many are laden with that silt. It’s ridiculous.)

You're doing it wrong. Rotate the can slowly in three dimensions. Tip it upside down four or five times and gently roll it back and forth across the counter for a while. It will taste 23 times better.

Exactly, decanting just turns your bitter mud water into 14 oz into potentially drinkable beer

the question is is it disappointing because you just expect better nowadays or because this is a bad batch? I thought it was good as ever, just such a benchmark for how far we've come. When I started drinking better beer about 10 years ago it was uncommonly good, now if it was a regular shelf beer it would be a 'what a score in this weird terrible bumfuck gas station beer', the hop game has changed entirely. To me it tastes like it always has but I wonder why I ever cared to get excited about its appearance

What was the positive technical merit in each case? In the case of Butler (Flats Lighthouse) you gave it a 4.22. Sounds very generous based on your description / comments in this thread.

Who knows why we do what we do after drinking four 8.9% beers? God knows I've done stupider, more embarrassing things than that.

The thing is, for what it is, basically an almost-triple IPA, each individual rating component is pretty much right on, pretty much what it's expected to be. I probably should have rated 'overall' as maybe a 3.5 and, looking back at my notes, I originally had it at a 3.75 but I may have had one of those boozy ARGH THIS FUCKING BEER IS FUCKING THE FUCK... WHERE THE FUCK'S MY FUCKING IPAD?!?! moments and changed it.

But, under Trillium's old fermentation profile, that beer would have been an easy 4.75. So, I guess that's what I'm thinking of when I rate it respectably but still say I didn't enjoy it, is the beer it should have been.

That didn't make a hell of a lot of sense, did it? I'm going to make another pot of coffee.

Celebration is just as good as it's ever been. It's a delicious beer with an old school, West Coast hop profile. Actually, I'm starting to prefer that over all these silly tropical fruit bombs.

Starting to prefer? Actually, I think you're going to finally admit that you're OK with crystal or caramel malt in an IPA.

There are always exceptions to the rule and Celebration is certainly one of them.

Yeah - but FYI and just to be non-controversially clear, I wasn’t trying to be accusatory, but rather, just giving a friendly tease. Shoulda added a smile thing.

Most of the German Lagers that aren't marketed as 'pilsners' are crap. Only 1 out of 10 I remember was good.

I jumped in part-way through this Trillium discussion, but didn't Trillium recently lose a head brewer? It could also explain a drop in quality/consistency across batches.

I don't know anything about that, and I don't think it's an issue of quality/consistency. They made a deliberate decision to change their fermentation profile which results in beers which IMHO just aren't as enjoyable.

I would direct any further inquiries to the Trillium thread on the New England subforum.
