Pretty much any barleywine or old ale (extra credit for BA). Just love the malty, carmel notes. Stouts and ports are a close second.

After a long, stressful day, a fresh hoppy pilsner hits the spot better than anything.

What’s odd is that I haven’t historically really loved quads yet totally agree with you — there’s something just oddly calming about the whole affair. I’d blame the booze, but BA stouts and the like don’t have the same effect on me. Weird.

Came here to say the exact same thing. No huge expectations, just knowing it's going to be a great beer.

Quick question, is the banana flavor from German beers from the yeast or the malt?

Yeast. It is an ester called isoamyl acetate. Many yeast strains with high esterase actively can make it in above threshold concentrations. Especially at higher fermentation temperatures. Not that you asked, but the clove component comes from both. The malt provides the phenolic precursor ferulic acid, which yeast with the proper enzyme (ferulate decarboxylase) can transform into 4vinylguaiacol, a phenol that smells and tastes like clove.

SN Bigfoot. Really any Barleywine, British or American, puts me in my happy place.

EMJ is more an expert on these styles than I'll ever be, but the reason why I like Weistephaner is that's it's not a banana or clove bomb. Most efforts IMO just taste strange and I don't like them.

At peace? Half Acre Space IPA (don't argue with me...)
Peaceful? +1 on anything over 10% and dark as night.

Thanks guys and Weihenstephaner is a tough act to follow.
I would be happy if a better Kristalweizen was accessible.

The next time I have a German style beer I will look for the clove smell/taste, try to isolate it against what I sometimes get as a baking spice-general spicy taste.

    Happy dead bird day.

§ucaba, the British Barleywine from Firestone Walker. Hard to come by in PA so I stock up a bit with the yearly release and have one occasionally. Delicious and comforting.

Exact opposite for me. I don't want to think about what I'm drinking in this situation. I want something I know and love but don't need to think about.

Probably Founders KBS or Backwoods Bastard.

SNPA. I don’t have to overthink it, analyze it, rate it, whatever.....just turn my brain off, drink, enjoy...it’s been my go-to for 15+ years.

I'm really surprised that so many answers to this thread are light-colored, lowish alcohol beers. I think 'sippers' are what is needed to slow down your life and be at peace. But I can see that many of these non-sippers are comfort beers, and something can be said for the relaxation qualities of comfort foods.

Turkey certainly falls into that category, so Happy Thanksgiving to one and all.
