Yeah, it just seems like there has been a lot of "back in my day" on here about BCS and a lot of the responses to my questions have been more or less saying that quality has been consistent (aside from BW) and that since 2014 it's been pretty difficult to obtain. I just don't understand the griping (other than it's the internet.)
EDIT: I've also had regular going back to '12 and did a 12-17 vertical last year. Thought that 13 and 15 were better than the rest but not by much.

Well, I objectively think coffee was getting worse before it went away. Perhaps my analysis of the frutied variants was not complete, the old ones (bramble, backyard, cherry) were definitely better than Regal Rye, Northwoods (gross) and midnight orange (although I am curious to see how this ages).

I am in the camp though that the variants are definitely worse more recently than they were in the past.

@ravens_wood 's post above got me thinking: in order, what are going to be the most-sought-after variants? just based on peoples' comments, i assume it'll go something like this:

    1. vanilla
    2. prop
    3. reserve
(ok, here's where it gets sticky)
    4. bramble
    5. coffee barleywine
    6. midnight orange
    7. wheatwine
    8. original

    am i off?

Isn't Prop always #1, just based on the fact that it's Chicago-only (did I hear DC as well this year)?

i was just basing this on the limit of 1 for vanilla and 2 for prop at LP (thinking there may be more in distribution). but you're probably right.

In fairness, I wonder how much of this can be attributed to a mindset of "well we have to do something different this year, even if different means worse." Let's say this year's Vanilla is the best of all the vanilla variants; they still probably wouldn't release it each time. And they're probably trying to continue to be creative with the fruit combos, even if said combo isn't as good as X.

I couldn't agree more with this list (especially the orig Barleywine). Only thing I'd add:
    - Send more to Michigan

I think Wheatwine ends up the sleeper pick of the year.

Nah, leave the Wheat Wine on the shelf its real bad. Not even a stout. You'll hate it.

Didnt something happen to some of the Cherry Rye so there wasnt as much yield? I cant remember cuz it was so long ago but I seem to remember rumors of that and in turn there wasnt as much to go around.

I'm literally going to buy a bottle if I see it based on your hype alone.

(but just one, so don't worry too much)

No, that's about what people will pick, because max profits. Which is hilarious, because it's basically the opposite if you believe people who review and write about beer for a living.

I like Josh, but I always take these types of reviews with a grain of salt. The reason BCBS and its variants are so popular is that there's something for everyone here--from the pastry bois to the traditionalists. Josh I think leans to the latter (he was anti-NE IPA for a while, if I recall correctly), which would mean his feelings are basically a mirror-image of mine.

I would imagine a lot of people would pick Prop over Regular year after year; I know I would, despite admitting that Regular is probably the "better" beer overall.

Guys there is a giant Foodliner truck hooked up to Fulton and Wood right now. I can only assume they’re pumping in hundreds of gallons of BCS.

    There is no one around.

I need some legal advice. What’s the worst I could be charged with if I accidentally bump in to it and re-hook it to my face...?

BCS doesn't start getting moved to Fulton until June or so.
