Hoping to get some insight from BA on an upcoming trip...

I'll be headed to NY in a week or so to check out Hudson Valley Brewery and Suarez Family, among others, and was hoping to check out a few beer stores with good NY distro along the way. Any recommendations from fellow BAs out there? Really any place fitting reasonably in between HVB and Suarez is in-play. I've tried to search through plenty, but I figure the more authentic answers might come from here (and that the obvious search results i.e. Half Time, seem to get a less-than-stellar response for everything aside from selection).

Any and all insight is really appreciated!

Ah, awesome! Thanks for this one, man! This is the type of place that wasn't coming up in my more generic searches, but looks pretty damn cool at first glance.

If you are coming across 84 definitely check out Deciccos as it’s a stone’s throw from the highway and has a fantastic selection. My main spots are on the west side of the river (Party beverages, K and e discount beverages, van loan), but park beverage in Hyde park is a decent spot with very little traffic - ive found some real gems in there from time to time.

I haven't been to that Half Time location in ages, but if it's anything like it once was, it's a no-brainer if you're going to Hudson Valley Brewery and Suarez and you have the time to shop. Don't worry too much about any negative feedback and enjoy it for what it is. Deciccos in Brewster is great but it's even better if you give yourself enough time for a few drinks while there (which isn't ideal if you're hitting two breweries in the same day). It's also a no-brainer if you're already passing by it due to your route.

On Half Time - If I ever go, I go to their Mamaroneck location these days (BTW - Decadent Ales is building a brewery/taproom inside that location), but with their wide selection and consumer ability to buy singles of anything, I find it almost impossible to leave without buying an equivalent of a case of beer every time I'm there. Just look out for dates as usual and expect to spend a lot.

One more thing - check the web (beermenus) for both Deciccos and Half Time for their crowler/growler options.

Endorsements all around for DeCiccos. Definitely thinking of adding it to the itinerary. Thank you both for that! Like I said, can't say I would've found it otherwise.

As for Half Time, I don't mean to really judge a place I've never been to; my skepticism is mainly based on what seems to be their universally-maligned price points, and since I plan to be a bit more free with my budget at the breweries themselves, a store with inflated prices may not be as ideal. That all being said, I will probably end up giving it a look, if for nothing else then for their selection alone.

Really appreciate this info, dude. Sounds like my main problem may be just to not get overwhelmed and spend a fortune, especially considering I can buy single of anything (did not know that before, now I'm worried for my wallet haha).

The warning to check dates should have been bolded and underlined, and the warning about prices too, at Half Time, Poughkeepsie. That said, DeCicco's also is not exactly a bargain basement. OTOH exceptional beers are available at DeCicco's for counter pressure growler fills. Stay away from fills at Half Time (unless they have gotten some employees who know what they're doing- I don't shop there ever anymore full disclosure). And the DeCicco's and staff are amazing beer people.

Gonna echo @cavedave in that neither Half Time nor Deciccos are places for bargain shoppers.

@cavedave and @zid , thank you both for the input. I suppose I have to figure any real beer "bargains" could be few and far between, but as I'm not intending to spend the majority of my money at stores anyway, I can probably make due (barring true extremes in pricing).

Any particular places you'd recommend, maybe as good examples of balance between selection and price in the area?

I live on the other side of the river from Suarez and Hudson Valley Brewery, and do most of my shopping nearer to where I live, at K&E in New Paltz mostly. Sad truth is we are not blessed with a lot of great stores around here, either side of the river. But when it comes to quality and selection, as well as it is literally one minute from I 84, you cannot beat DeCicco's Brewster store. Wish it was closer to me, but the 45 minute drive is always worth it.

Seriously, you (and the others that have commented) have probably saved me a ton of unfruitful searches, so thank you. I'm sure I'll appreciate the experience regardless of what I find; for me, that is what it's largely about, in the end. Cheers, dude!

I'm not familiar with the area but I know Deciccos Brewster well enough (and my view on Half Time will be based on knowing their other newer location MUCH better). My recommendation will be pretty mundane. First, look at their crowler options that day and let that be a big factor if it's one for you. If you want lots of options for singles, go to Half Time. If you want to drink at a bar, go to Deciccos Brewster. If you want to 95% concentrate on the two breweries you are visiting, then just pick whichever store is an easier spot to get to and ignore the other. If you're trying to get a broad impression of the area, go to both. I don't know any other stores enough to recommend them.

If you find yourself on the west side of the river don’t sleep on Party beverages
In Newburgh, they’re good people with a nice selection, now a ton of singles available and very fair pricing. You can shoot across the bridge from HVB and be there in 10-15 minutes...killer diner (Alexis) right there too. Also a very good liquor store (midvalley) with a strong bourbon and rye selection if that’s your thing. Newburgh brewing company is a nice hang too.

That's extremely helpful, dude. When exploring beer territory largely unknown to me, I usually stick to the singles (took home around a case-worth of them during trip to Brooklyn, for example, as I'd never really had beer from that distro area). So if Half Time has drastically more singles offerings, I may end up spending more time there. Luckily, I'm fortunate enough to have essentially a full day or two to spend in the area, so I'll likely have the opportunity to give both stores a look. The breweries are still an absolute priority, though. Hell, they're what's bringing me to the area in the first place.

Thank you for the suggestion, dude. I'll definitely have to give them a look, as singles will be big for me in a newer area. The liquor store and a strong bourbon and rye presence is definitely a plus, too, as both myself and my travel buddy are pretty big into them. Definitely a selling point for him if he's feeling like a bourbon haul is in order (and maybe for me, as well, assuming I haven't totally exhausted my budget on beer lol). Thanks again!
