I chose the one you suggested (which was really damn good), so you’re partially to thank or blame or something. Also, if you hadn’t gotten me hooked on that Solaris from Baerlic...

Exactly the only thing I absolutely hate about the style. Here was blown a perfect opportunity to start a completely new style with it's very own definitions, guidelines, etc, yet it was thrown into a category which couldn't be more polarizing (now) except for its increased hop additions. Now we have to walk a line (at least here) in regards to judging a beer and properly categorize it based on sub-styles that are clearly undefined.

I had that Pictavia last night and really enjoyed it. The Whisky character was more along the lines of a more rounded Speyside, and not as peaty/smoky/angular as an island malt- it worked very well with the base beer while conjuring up the image of a Macallan or Glenfiddich. It was very wise of Allagash to keep the abv in check, too, or that character could have gotten out of hand.

That was a great series of posts, and that box looks like a hell of a lot of fun! Thanks for doing it on NBS.

Not really, and for 2 reasons.
1- since the beers are assigned their style by the member who added it to the database, it could very well be in the wrong place.

2- we are asked to rate with style in mind, which is quite different from rating exactly to style. They just want you to judge the beer on its own terms, that's all.

Martin House Brewing Co out of Fort Worth, Texas. This is their Pomona Whiskey BA fruited sour series. This particular beer was brewed with over 600 pounds of passion fruit.

Whoo boy this is a puckerer. Nice subtle whiskey and vanilla mesh with the loads of passion fruit tropical flavors.

Really interesting beer, not so sure I'd wanna drink more than one though haha.

    Cheers fellas!

@drtth. I believe I found the sixpoint 4 bean in a Joe canal liquor store on rt 1 near the garden state parkway entrance. There's another one much farther down towards pa near princeton

True, especially in regards to part 1. Ultimately, my point is that the NE IPA could have been initially called anything else that would define itself and not put it in another category that could be confusing. It may have been the first time in decades that a style may have been uniquely itself, yet is piggybacked on a very (now) broad and blurred category.

This one I may have had from a previous Michigan exchange but its been years and its so good. This came courtesy of @FlintB.
Kuhnhenn Dark Heathen Triple Bock Lager
    Poured at cellar temp 55°.
Pours a deep brown ruby red with little to no head or lacing with just a thin ring. Beautiful color.
Aroma is lots of dark fruits: dates, raisins, plums with a touch of burnt/brown sugar and candied dark malts.
Taste is raisins, dates, other dark fruits and caramelized brown sugar, hint of bakers chocolate and mild coffee. Yum.
Body is definitely lager like in its feel drinking on the medium side with a mild bitterness and finishes rather sweet but not cloying- has a bit of dryness. Really no hint of the 12.5% except for a warming stomach.
Holy crap what an oustanding brew! Everything Ive had the opportunity to drink from this brewery has been excellent. So happy to have had the chance. What a fantastic early winter brew. Thanks again @FlintB![IMG]

You’re welcome, NBS seemed like the best place to post it! It was a lot fun, at first I thought $50 for it was a little much but it was worth every penny, gives a great insight to how much the foeders influence the beer, plus 108 and 91 are truly great beers.
