Really? I wonder why they would choose to make this absurd a beer be their first experiment in barrel aging...think you'd start with some smaller, simpler sample sizes first. Barrel aging can result in all sorts of hilarious and freakish disasters, ugly or beautiful.

I don't think you're far off (may need a smaller plus on your end), but it seems like people are holding on to Assassin '18 and packaging them up with something else in order to get something bigger than Assassin '18 caliber beers. But all in all, I don't think you're far off.

I guess they didn't think of that (or were unaware that could happen).

Not that I'm an expert on the subject, but I remember being a bit surprised when they announced (some months ago) that they had taken a batch of their regular DS and were aging it in a bourbon barrel to see what would happen.

Fremont Brewing is pretty much the resident expert in our region when it comes to barrel aging stouts. I had the opportunity to talk to the owner about their barrel aging program a couple years back, which was fascinating. One of the things he mentioned, is that they've learned over the years that you really don't want to use the base beer recipe when making a BA stout. For instance, they found that it was necessary to tweak their dark star recipe when making barrel aged dark star, in order to get the most out of the recipe. For that matter, even the barrel aged beer recipes are tweaked a bit when making different variants in order to let the adjunct flavor shine (coffee, cinnamon and coconut for example).

Just my two cents and humble opinion, but it might not have been a bad idea for the folks at GN to talk to someone over at Fremont or Deschutes before trying to make a BA stout. For all I know, maybe that's what they did, but it wasn't obvious based on the beer I tried over at the brewpub yesterday.

Founders has talked about this too. When they first did KBS, they just barrel aged breakfast stout and said it didn't work at all. So they had to heavily beef up the recipe to barrel age it.

I've heard the same about Goose Island too and how the base for Bourbon county is pretty much an "undrinkable stout" made just for barrel aging.

Interesting.... This would possibly explain why when a local brewery barrel aged their tasty milk stout .... It was not so good lol

Dont think you're out of your element that year was 2009 if I'm not mistaken. Could be hard to find one in the wild. I've got a b2 if I can wrestle that maman away from you

Looking to get another Transient Kentuckley. Would an 18 BCS Vanilla go 1:1? I'm thinking there might need to be a plus on the BCS side.

I would say a plus on the BCS side. One about half a BCBSV, maybe more would be my guess.

Would D8 trade 1:1 for a bottle of SR-71 batch 1 or would someone need to add a plus?

I think you’re close. I just had a hell of a time chasing a SR b1. They don’t trade anymore. Not sure if any big bottles exchange hands via trade. D8 was a delicious brew. GL OP!

I went 1:1 on Reserve w/Kentuckley if that helps; incidentally, when I was looking to do Reserve+Vanilla for Kentuckley+Canuckley, I got crickets. So vanilla probably needs a plus.

For the thread: disregarding whether it would actually happen or not, hypothetically, how many BC Reserve '18 would it take to pull a Orange Wax Assassin?

Would GTS ‘18 go 1:1 with any PVW? If so which one is a fair trade?

Simple answer is no. The closest Van Winkle equivalent you would be able to 1:1 with is Old Rip. I know this is not Pappy but probably the closest you would get 1:1 of the VW collection.

Yeah, for an actual Pappy you'd need quite a bit more. For a PVW 15, you'd need 2 GTS and probably a solid plus.
