I can't help, I lost my taste for IPA's years ago. I found Stouts and Porters my beverage of choice.

Not a big IPA drinker so when my barman said try this IPA it's different I was hesitant. Ska Brewing Moral Panic Brut IPA. It was light, crisp and refreshing without the overbearing hoppy taste I shy away from usually. An excellent, easy-drinking on a blazing-hot Phoenix summer day type of brew. Very yummy! I will order it again and again. Keep in mind, this was my first brut IPA. I rated it 4.5/5 on UnTappd. An extremely high rating for me. Hope that helps.

    Merry Christmas!:beers:

I’ve had like 3 and I enjoy them. Two were from J Wakefield I remember.

I enjoyed that beer but it didn't seem to be a good representation of the style.

Seems like the Syrah Grape Must would detract from experiencing that as a brut IPA.

So, you do understand some of the reactions, right?
Please do share with us the beers that were "done right". Without this input how would we know otherwise?

    Cheers!

Fat Heads makes a great one. If you don’t like it then give up on the style.

New Belgium Brut IPA is solid!

For the most part, they remind me of a session IPA. Low or non-existent malt balance and lots of hoppy aromas and flavors. I understand the finish is supposed to be dry but most fail at that. Brewery Vivant Champion Brut is one of the best I have had. I try them and am consistently disappointed.

I have only tried a few but enjoyed Maplewood from Chicago and Station 26 in Stapleton, CO. The later a good stop between Denver and the airport on your way in/out of town. I like the twist on the IPA style in a world where so many beers are going “juicy”. I love the hazy/ NEIPA as well but find this to be refreshing and a good variation.

I’ve tried several and so far, none of them were anything I need to have again. I am not sure I get what the appeal is supposed to be either, as I found them to be a bit lack-luster. Oh well, I won’t give up trying them just yet, though.

I enjoyed a new release from Surly Brewing in Minneapolis: Liquid Stardust, a brut IPA, 7% ABV. YEAST English Ale. HOPS Amarillo, Citra, Mosaic. MALT Pilsner, Acidulated, Carafoam.
    Golden color, dry finish, crisp.

I had a Stone Enjoy By 01.01.19 tonight and liked it. Grapefruit. Hoppy. I wouldn't have guessed "Brut" though. But it's definitely not sweet.

“Session IPA” ...more BS marketing. A “session” IPA was simply a pale ale until 5 years ago. That’s what it is. But now you need to have IPA in the name to sell beer.

I’m a big fan of the style’s potential. I’ve had four:

    Hopsaint - Brut Wayne (fantastic)
    MadeWest - Effervescent (excellent)
El Segundo - Seco Brut IPA (ok)
Stone - Brut Enjoy By (not great)

I think people are still trying to figure out how to brew it....will take some time; it’ll evolve, and I predict 2019 will be the year of the Brut.

Hopsaint knocked my socks off...fell in love. Crisp, dry, clean (yes, somewhat like a sparkling wine)....yet still retaining pine and citrus of a great west coast IPA. It was such a great experience that I’ve been seeking out other examples with mixed results.

I can understand the general “meh” from the forums....I get it....until you’ve had a great example, I don’t think you can appreciate the style. I am confident brewers will improve and more options will hit distribution.

All depends on what you believe a brut IPA should be. For me I thought this was really nice. I believe they made a white, I think Chardonnay version as well. This was up there with quite a few of the first versions. Since then the style has evolved. Whether there is a solid definition, to me, has yet to be determined. Just look at the miriad of opinions on this thread. Its reminding me of great NE IPA debate.

As a homebrewer, BRUT Pale Ales are fun to tinker with. I like the ability to experiment with a low-carb beer as well as have another way to dry out a Double IPA. It has given me a new appreciation for malt and hop flavor complexity in beers without gobs of mouth feel. It is easy to get wrong if you use a heavy hand...part of the challenge. Purists will say it's a fad, but I think there is more than enough room for innovative brewing methods in the brewhouse.
