Despite the name, I too get a very dank aroma from this beer (I love the beer, btw). May be one for you to try, especially given the relative ease of finding it.

I would not compare dank to earth like at all, to me dank is your beer smelling like weed/pot. The beers I have that do smell like this are so close its scary, the main reason being that hops are related to the cannabis family.

Humulus lupulus, or hops, is also a member of the Cannabaceae family. Used mainly in beer, hops has a number of medicinal benefits especially for digestion, anxiety, and inflammation. Hops and cannabis physically look similar, and both contain therapeutic terpenoids (aromatic molecules) and flavonoids (pigmentation molecules). However, whereas cannabis is herbaceous, or a botanical herb, hops is bine, meaning that it’s a climbing plant.

Got it sort of like the bleachers in Yankee Statium in the late 1960's!

I know what it has come to mean, and words and meanings do undergo generational and other changes through time. Like gnarly. Even so, weed smells a whole lot better than the dank things in my olfactory memory.

This beer doesn't come off tropical to me at all either. I'm not at all saying it's the dankest beer out there, but under 7% and easy to get... yeah, it's dank to me.

Words can have more than one meaning. Dank can describe an old wet basement smell - it can also describe the aroma of cannabis which is what is meant when talking about beer. Not basement dank, never.

Breaking Bud by Knee Deep at 6.5%. I mean, it's even in the name.

I know OP is from NY, but if you have an Ohio buddy, some decently fresh Mystic Mama from Jackie Os. They revamped their recipe this year and it's unreal how delicious it is now. Although it's 7% on the dot.

And also Oskar Blues Pinner has some potent batches (no pun). According to them, the hops they use for Pinner are "whatever they have lying around". Hence the name, haha. Supposedly each batch is different.

Seconding this 100%. It's not only a "dank" IPA (whatever that contextually means), but it's one of the best IPAs overall.

there were experiments in the 70s trying to splice pot onto a hops plant to grow "legal" pot. I never heard of anyone successfully doing it, but for all the reasons you listed, it made "sense" to try.

    Props for reviving year-old threads

That was then, now it's all about the upgraded 2.0 version of this which is Revision IPA.

By upgraded 2.0 version do you mean the "changing the name because we might have got a C+D letter" version?

No, I mean the original founder/brewmaster of Knee Deep who came up with Breaking Bud and all of their other great IPAs left a couple of years ago to start Revision Brewing; and well, they're the ones putting out terrific IPAs now, starting with the flagship. Breaking Bud is still on the shelf - it doesn't appear like anything's come of that letter just yet.

Long Trail Green Mountain Haze is a nice ,dank, IPA. I believe it is 6% ABV.

I'd say the Re-imagined IPA from Revision, everyone talks about their seemingly endless supply of NEIPAS but their clear stuff is great too.

    Wormtown's Be Hoppy. 6.5ABV.

I think that Dank is different than a weed smell, Dank can be piney/resiny from hops but it certainly can have a weed-like smell/taste. To me dank is musty, weed dealers describe their product as "Dank" to give it some selling hype.

Ever try the Green Blaze, 6.5 and very dank.
