John, then my suggestion is for you to not be a quitter like me and seek this beer out in 2019.

Happy New Year & Best of Luck!

I've always enjoyed NN, and I'll definitely have some this year. I know someone that works at Troegs, so I'm certain he'll have some around.

I agree that it hasn't always been consistent from batch to batch, though I think it's always a good beer regardless.

I just don't think it's good enough to buy more than a 6 pack given all of the other great hoppy beers out there these days.

    You can’t reply here?

Sure not driving out there to hear an explanation. I love the hop fries and the beers are good but if I’m not out that way I’m not going, too long a ride to go drink one beer and drive home.

    Enjoy

I wasn't impressed with last year's batch, but since I've gained more of an affection for ambers recently, I'll probably give this batch another go.

I'm not a fan of ambers in general, this is the only one I buy, but I buy it as soon as it appears on the shelf. I buy a 6 or maybe a 12 and after that I let it alone. My impression is the retailers don't order as much as they used to, it used to be available in volume for a decent amount of time, cans and bottles if I remember right. But as mentioned above the volume of local ipas available right now is tremendous.

I feel like I've still seen last years on shelves recently

That's a huge problem for Troegs, some poor guy buys that thinking its fresh and it's a year old mess of a malt bomb. That guy might never buy another one again, irresponsible of the retailer to not pull that off the shelf if it's truly a year old, it hurts his rep too. I might look for another beer store.

Dale, if you have beer retailers that do not have old beers on their shelves you are a lucky man.

I have been 'forced' to get into the practice of looking at the dates on the bottles/cans before I purchase beers. I pick up and put back down a lot of beer.

    Cheers!

I recently drank my last bottle of that I had in my cellar - that batch was sublime.

Still have a bottle of the regular FM, wish they'd brew that again.

I'm sure he could, but I'm assuming he'd just as soon not start up what has become an ongoing argument/harangue. Oneraindog (as well as Troeg's - I've always assumed that oneraindog works at Troegs) has consistently argued over the years (usually over in the Mid Atlantic forum)that there has been no batch variation, and that there are other reasons/factors that explain why different batches taste different to different consumers (at different times). I assume that's why he used the term "legend" of good and bad batches. If memory serves, I think Troeg's did acknowledge that the first batch they made at the new brewery was a bit "off" (not bad, just not what they were aiming for when they brewed it), as they were attempting to dial in the recipe in a new, larger brewery. Otherwise, if memory serves, I believe Troeg's has always stated that they use the same recipe every year, and that there is no variation from batch to batch.

While I'm happy to acknowledge his point (that there likely are other factors/reasons that could explain why consumers may detect some quality variation from year to year), I continue to disagree with him. At least to my palate, there have definitely been what I've felt were subpar batches of NN that I don't think can be explained away by temperature and light contact, storage problems, palate fatigue, etc. That being said, he of course is entitled to his opinion.

Oh, the joys of craft beer marketing. Where "excessive" is used as a positive.

I always look forward to this. Hate to say how far back I go with it, but suffice it to say that it was when Nugget Nectar was as looked-forward to a release as KBS and BCBS.
I do agree wholeheartedly that it doesn't age well - some years back I found a 6-month old 6er I had forgotten I bought. Yeah, but malty mess, but still with the bitterness. I did drink 4 of them, I think, I used the other 2 in cooking.

If you went back and were able to drink every beer you ever tried every year I bet you would also notice some taste different than when you first tried them.

Nugget Nectar is an easy target in that it is anticipated and we can more easily recall the past years.

I also had batch variation in certain years but not enough to drag it out this long. I feel like you guys are molesting a dead horse per say.

It would appear that you are more tolerant of batch to batch variation.

I beg to differ with you slightly here. Beating a dead horse is not illegal but molesting one probably is.

I'm relieved to hear that, as I've beaten many over the years.

Pretty sure I've never molested one.
