I didn't want to start a separate thread so going to put this out here for our cousins across the pond, headed over to London for a month of work in December, will be staying near St. Paul's any suggestions around the craft beer scene, going to visit Mother Kelly's in Bethnal Green, enjoyed a nice Saturday afternoon there in July. Also will hit the Draft House in Seething Lane, stop by Dean Swift. Looking for insider info - thanks

thought i'd try a mini lager-off from aldi's offerings, steinhauser v. rheinbacher pils v. WEST 4. The WEST wins it, more flavour and less abv. Steinhauser in second, rheinbacher in third, although it was all fairly close.

2nd and 3rd are very poor beers.

Yeah I'd put them a step up from crap British lagers but I don't think they are close to the better German ones. They are at the minimum price in Scotland of 50p a unit. I still long for the day that Lidl and Aldi make proper use of their German connections and get a good lager in permanently...

‘Better than Rheinbacher’ is damned with faint praise.

True, but there are plenty of worse ones out there

I had another taste off between large volume lagers last night, one I've done before. Budvar and Pilsner Urquell, like both a lot for different reasons. There was a lot more differences between the two than the last lot. Very similar ingredients in the beers and same starting gravity I think but a very different drinking experience, main similarity comes through with the saaz hops.

Trying a Guinness West Indies Porter again and still quite liking it...a good value one too, it's at the minimum possible price

Haven't been on here a while so won't give a huge list, just a few from the last couple of days. Stone tap takeover @ Small Bar :

    Stone Xocoveza, Woot Stout
    Stone/IMBC/Magic Rock/Buxton/North Brewing Fellowsip IPA

Really liked the WOOT stout and nice to try Xocoveza this time of year and on keg. IPA solid but not the sum of the individual breweries involved which would probably be mind bending.

The Beer O'clock show lads were down for their Crimbo Crawl. Nice to put faces to voices and a lovely tasting session at Lost and Grounded hosted by Alex and Annie. Many of their core range I hadn't tried for a long while and great to return to old friends. Very solid line up across the range. I bailed out after this due to recovery from a sprained ankle. The itinerary looked insane. Saving myself for Small Bar's 5th b'day bash on Tues.

Judging from the lagers available from one of Lidl's shops in Berlin I wouldn't hold your breath.

Yeah , they are budget supermarkets after all. Did they have some in plastic bottles? I seem to remember that being a thing last time I was in germany

The Thursday 29th November to Saturday 1st of December was the Fifth Independent Salford Beer Festival
I now work Fri/Sat/Sun got the Friday off but my holidays Saturday(to work the fest) & Sunday (to recover) were declined so I've really only just caught my breath after doing two days bar work whilst sampling 80 beers then two days job work.

It was the usual amazing level of awesome beer there is always a strong Manchester/NW contingent but the overall beer range seemed to expand well beyond the rough Lancashire Vs Yorkshire lines.

Drank a 5 year old bottle of Dolle Stille Nacht tonight, it's really aged well. Syrupy with just enough carbonation to stop it from being flat. Almost like Tawny port.

Bear claw’s Auld Beast Flanders style red ale has been consumed. Utterly magnificent beer from this brilliant small brewery.

.drunk a few of the Arran brewery beers over the least few days , had some before and thought they were a bit too much like bad homebrew. They still are unfortunately.

Went into work on a day off today because colleague needed backing up in a formal meeting.

She told me management in last meeting were bullying & unfair, that there was a vast improvement in the atmosphere with me there.

On the way back missed my connecting bus by seconds, so was stuck in Northenden.

Thought I’d check the Polish shop for proper Cheetos, none there but big selection of Polish beer, Porteris, must be like porter, can’t go wrong with dark beer.

So he rings it up £2.28, not bad I think, & give a smiling nod as if to say this is good.

He then cancels it & rings it up again & Im worrying now I’ll be ripped off.

    £1.89!

Do the Polish mafia where purple ties?

Not had a lot to drink recently because my wife gave birth to a baby girl on the 5th January. Though had some pretty good beers in the last week. A can of Buxton rain shadow and tiny rebel imperial chocolate lift we had been saving from last year, and verdant putty and northern monk skelatory really good hoppy beers. Also had a gingerbread stout from thirst class.
